As many of you may have noticed, there was no narrator this week! YES! I am VERY excited. I knew that if I wrote my letter to Santa Claus, that I would get what I wished. It looks like I have been a really good boy this year, and I sure hope it means that I'll be getting the top two things that I wished for as well. Death to the Heroes narrator was actually third on the list right after "marriage, ten kids, and happily ever after with Tyra Banks" and "bring back Jell-O pudding pops AND those Bill Cosby commercials". And yes, I mean the real pudding pops and not the cheap third-party sell out your brand name knockoffs we currently live with. The narrator may come back next week, but until then I will congratulate all of us who hated the narrator and wanted to see him go.
With the absence of the narrator, Mohinder was free to talk as much as he wanted to, and so he dropped a little bit more knowledge on us:
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose. The earth spins at a thousand miles and hour as we desperately try to keep from being thrown off, like the first blush of winter that signals a great migration. Is there any warning of their arrival? A sign? A single event that sent that change in motion? Was it a whisper in god's ear? Survive. Adapt. Escape. And if we could mark that single moment in time, that first hint of the prophecy of approaching danger, would we have done anything differently. Could it have been stopped? Or was the die long ago cast. and if we could go back, alter it's course, stop it from happening, could we?
Did you get all of that? At this point in time, Mohinder's words to live by are almost comical. Even Oprah would say this guy talks too much.
Anyway, we had a little bit of a review of things that had happened up until this point, and then we started getting into a few of the newer. OK, so technically, nothing was "new" because the episode was entitled "Six Months Ago", but I think you get what we mean.
First, we got a look at Hiro. He jumped back in time in order to save the waitress Charlie's life, but he is new at this Hero business and is still working the kinks out when it comes to telling people about stuff that is going to be happening in the future. Charlie is just about to celebrate her birthday when Hiro pops in and says "My name is Hiro Nakamura. I am here to save your life!". Charlie doesn't know what to say, looks at him, and then goes back to blowing out her candles. I know Hiro becomes a bad ass at some point, but we still love him when he was simple and sweet, even if he wasn't very smooth.

I couldn't remember if Charlie had said a friend gave her a Japanese phrase book for her birthday. Thanks for clearing that up, even though it still doesn't make any sense.

Mr. Rox mentioned a few episodes back that some of the Heroes powers seemed to be directly related to their personal needs: for example - Claire is a major clutz = regeneration. Finding out last night that Matt has dyslexia and can read minds is another...I don't know if he's on to anything but it's an interesting thought.

As soon as I noticed the narrator was gone, I was like, J-Unit is gonna be so happy. I am too! The previouslies are a better place for Mohinder's ramblings.
Now if we can just get those pudding pops back! A couple years ago I got a craving for them and was amazed that they were no longer sold. Really.
This episode was great. I love the interactions between Claire and her father. And the eye-sex between Nathan and Peter was UNREAL!

I felt so sorry for Hiro when he didn't get to kiss Charlie and even worse when he didn't get to save her.
Sylar is a perfect psycho bad guy...freaks me out to see his weird eyebrows too.
Great recap JoJo - thanks.

I love this show.
Does anyone remember in the diner when the older waitress told Ando that the guy "Hiro" stopped coming to the diner a few weeks ago? The time Hiro was with Charlie didn't seem that long, certainly not 5+ months.
Anyway, great recap J-unit. Sorry about the pudding pops. I'm still mourning Jello's 1-2-3.

Aww you forgot to mention that Dr. Suresh mentions something to Sylar about the soul existing in the brain or something along those lines.
That explains why Sylar is picking out the special ones' brains to oak up all of their powers.
It's pretty gross thinking about that guy eating people brains but it sure is interesting.

Great recap!! I can't wait till next week's episode!
It looks like Sylar might be able to "see" how other people's brain are different than normal brains, just like he was able to notice Dr. Suresh's watch malfunctioning... No idea how he gets other people's powers, though.
It was also great to see more of Claire and her dad, it confirmed my suspicions that he wasn't (such) a bad guy, it would’ve been too obvious if he was... Although I still wonder about what he does and how he knows about the other heroes…
Did anyone else notice what Hiro said when he hang up the phone after talking to himself?? “Great Scott!!”
Hiro is freakin’ awesome...

First of all, I am obsessed with heroes, and I love this forum!! I have a question, if anyone could answer it I would really appreciate it. I don't know if I missed something, but how did Chandra find the Heroes?? He has the map pinpointed with all the people with powers around the world, how did he find them??

"Seriously. You can't fly out of your seat if you are strapped in."
Thanx for pointing that out J, I was thinking the same exact thing. I fight all the time with my friend about wearing a seatbelt. He says he scared to be strangled to death...WTF...Has anyone else ever given such a lame ass excuse for not buckeling up...

Yes! It was completely creeping me out, and it was followed by a lot of touchy-feely moves in the ER. Bromoerotic, indeed.

LOL, bromoerotic.
Yeah Chendra finds everyone using the Human Genome project and his uber-computer. I really did not like how that explanation was handled. It makes almost no sense. The human genome project mapped every possible gene, not every person on earths genes. I am also really confused on the whole Charlie/Hiro time paradox. Hopefully something that will be explored in future episodes. Charlie just seems like too good a character to not reuse.

Bromoerotic ROFL
Regarding the time paradox and human genome project, unfortunately, I think they're making it sci-fi-fi-fi; they're making it easier for the average person instead of letting it be right for the "unfortunate few" who are in the know about those things.
Easy explanation out: "It's the author's reality. Our reality's laws are different." :-P
It's a bit frustrating, but it's still entertaining enough. I can't wait to see what they do to Sylar. Not killing him makes me question Mr. Bennet a little still...

I got a bit choked up when Charlie told Hiro about the blood clot in her brain. Did she still end up getting killed by Sylar?
Speaking of which, is Sylar eating those brains or is he just trying to "fix" them like some sort of broken watch?

Great re-cap J!
To me, I heard Hiro say "Greato Scott!"...goes through my head once in a while. People at work are wondering why every once in a while i'm giggling in my lil cubicle. tee hee.
Also loved the "Leonard DeClairvoyant" reference.
Alas I was never able to see the 'Save the Cheerleader' episode, but i'm hoping that it will be in re-run as the powers that be informed us that the next show will be the last show until January! (WTF!)... but what can you do....
Keep up the good work J!
Happy B-day to me! TP

Great episode!
I wish the producers of Lost would learn something from the Heroes folks: that they can reveal things without spoiling the show or running out of material.
I too am confused about the whole time-lapse thingy. How come she didn't recognize Hiro at the later date? Did the Eraser show up?

First of all Heroes is now my favorite tv show and this commentary rocks!! I was just wondering if someone could answer a question for me. How did Chandra Suresh find the Heroes with the special powers? He has them pinpointed on the map, but how did he find them? I may have just missed something, I would appreciate if someone could let me know.
Thanks :)

That Ben Davis guy seemed really familiar to me until I realized that he plays the assistant coroner on CSI and is also the show's head researcher. So if I had to guess he probably wasn't playing the part of the geek, he actually is one.

I think it's because he overheard her telling Hiro about her power ("I suddenly have a photographic memory!") and Hiro was spared only because he decided to tell her he "can teach Japanese" instead of "I can bend time and space".

There is actually not a paradox in this episode for the Japanese phrase book. There is nothing to state that the phrase book is the same. Hiro DID change the past. HE appeared in that picture, and I am not certain that Sylar actually killed Charlie. Remember that after Hiro leaves, the diner goes back to pretty much normal without the cops, but with the shrine and all that, and the owner remembers Hiro. Hiro, unfortunately was not able to save her. I wish he had. Heroes has quickly become my favorite show.

Also, Sylar did kill Charlie (Mr. Bennet has a picture of what Sylar did to her). The police were still there when Hiro left at the end of the previous episode. What we saw with the shrine was the next day or maybe just a little later in the same day. Another oddity: everyone in the diner's memory seems to be altered from Hiro's trip except for Ando's.

Yes, the Paradox comes from the previous/Hiros. The only thing that messes me up is the Japanese Phrase Book. Hiro gave it to her, but if he met her in the past, she should have remembered. We resolve this by taking an "alternate universes" theory to time travel, almost like what happens in the Back to the Future series. Marty continually does things that you think he or his family would remember. Shouldn't his parents have remembered meeting a person who looked exactly like their son that brought them together in the past and think that was strange? Yet, they don't remember.
So, you have to take what the current Hiro does separately from what happens. The reason why he didn't speak with himself in Japan was that he was worried that he would somehow alter the future, meaning that he might not even make it the states in the first place. However, the Hiro that he talked to in Japan (Hiro-2) would have all of the same things happen to him as Hiro-1, including meeting Charlie, watching her killed by Sylar, and then trying to go back in time to fix it, only to find that she has a brain aneurysm.
What we are seeing with Hiro-1 when he gets back and says "I couldn't save her" and "this power is bigger than me", is his realization that he hasn't yet figured out what he must do to change the future by going in the past. Now, the freaky part is that we know in the future Hiro becomes a bad ass samurai and figures out what he needs to do in the past to change the future when he stops Peter on the train and gives him the message. So, would Hiro-1 eventually get that powerful and go back and try and save Charlie again?

The reason why he didn't speak with himself in Japan was that he was worried that he would somehow alter the future, meaning that he might not even make it the states in the first place. I'm just curious, but did we ever see Hiro at his office in Japan answer a phone call with no one on the other end?

"What about Charlie and her blood clot? Maybe that's the cause she is able to remember things, maybe that degeneration is also caused by the mutation that makes them special, just like Mohinder's sister.."
Didn't Dr. Suresh himself tell Claire's dad that the source of the powers is a mutation in the exact same way that a cancer/tumor is a mutation? I believe that is what happend to his daughter (a cancer or a clot). Wouldn't that be something if all of our Heroes are already dying because of something internally?
