After singing the "Stah Spangled Bannah" on opening day at Fenway, Laurel will do a short run as Annie on Broadway. Then she'll move to New York where she'll discover the only other way to really assault the letter R. She'll do television or film for a while. Eventually the Hollywood scene will get old and she'll move back to Boston to have a family. And become a speech pathologist.

Guylan will leave Bonanza, watch the full season of Kid Nation and develop raging anger over the Pioneers who spoke badly about him. He'll finish home school, move out of the zoo, develop a People To Kill list, and hatch plans to follow through. He's adding my name to the top of that list right now.

DK will watch the entire season of Kid Nation and realize what a huge role Jared played in the show, albeit not necessarily Bonanza itself. He'll spend three years feeling guilty that he never gave Jared a gold star.

Jared will turn down an offer for a spin off when the network and his attorney (who shall remain nameless, but once did a little recapping under the guise of a doctor) can't reach an agreement as to Jared's right of creative freedom. He'll wind up going into engineering, discover you can't actually create a transportation devise and will become infamous for robbing a number of Georgia banks with just a ski mask and a lollipop. He'll be known as the Candyland Caper.

Well Gasmii, I'm afraid that's all. Despite all my joking I really feel that every one of these kids are such fantastic children. Every one of them. I wish them all the best. Thanks again to the Kid Nation parents who joined us, Laurel's Mom, Michael's Dad... Thank you to the readers who commented every single week. Your loyalty is appreciated:
(warof7, KikiC,Splotchie,reese,fire@will,thisshowrocks,shelly,derek512,farrell100,steez,gifford and goosegg) And if I forgot you, please don't take offense, I just can't remember everyone's names but I do appreciate it.

Its been a pleasure watching with you Gasmii.

Muah!

Laurel's mom here. Another fantastic recap. I'll miss them. I've actually printed them out and have put them away in Laurel's Bonanza Box.

"Gentleman next to Laurel's mom" is Laurel's dad!

I know that it wasn't just Michael's dad and I that enjoyed your recaps, lots of parents did. You have a real talent!

Good Luck with Dex!

dani2526:

Thank you, McSteeny for ALL your humor and wise-cracks over the season! You truly are the best writer on this site. What oh what will you recap next?? Hmmm??

I'm sad that our Jared didn't get a gold star, but, as my husband (and Jared) says, a nobel prize is worth five or six gold stars! So there!

minime57:

Dr. McSteeny - you ROCK!!

I too think Jared was the best thing about Kid Nation, however, in my family - he is known as "Oddie."

Who thinks his dad looked like Flounder in Animal House, with longer hair?

ThisShowRocks!:

HA! What the hell? Seriously...is Dexter gay? True, your seductions skills need a little brushing up, but still...he's a guy, and just opening the door for them makes them think you're giving the green light!
And doesn't he read your recaps? This can't be a secret! OK...moving on. But somehow, we're expecting an update.

Who was the 2nd girl to get a gold star? I'd never seen her before. I think I must've missed the episode where she won the first one.

And I didn't get a good look at Taylor's Mom, but when I got a glimpse, I said to my TV..."YOU created this!" I have to say - if I ever see Taylor and company again, it'll be too soon.
I know they're just kids, but some of them were a piece of work...starting with Taylor. Blah.

Loved the predictions.

Thanks again for taking the time to recap this show. It's always entertaining! Until next season...

Gigglesgirlee:

When this show started and they were showing previews, I remember seeing this one kid crying during the town meeting saying that he wanted to go home because he missed his brother who's in a wheelchair. Other kids got up to comfort him. They never did show that did they?

warof7:

Mcsteeny

i only stumbled upon ur recaps half way thourgh the season but i have loved them since. i remember that day i was sitting in class and had nothing to doso i google search kid nation and i found u and laigh though ur recaps myy friends all looked at me lioke im stupid. but i still love kidnation

KikiC:

Wow! I got a "shout-out" from McSteeny!

I will truly miss these recaps. They absolutely rock. I hope that you will recap another show in the future...one I watch!

Thanks for all your laughs.

I hope they do a reunion show in one year so we can see how these kids are doing.

criscogirl:

So, I love your recaps (and loved this one too) but you missed one of my favorite moments of the entire season...Alex's parents tickling him and him saying "okay, okay, that's enough". I think I replayed that moment twenty times.
I am going to miss characters like Jared, Alex, and Nathan...best reality TV "stars" ever.

Derek512:

McSteeny, you /remembered me!/ Haha, another great recap. But sadly, the last. I seriously want you to recap some other show. I'll miss your sarcasm and wit if you don't! And you're so pretty. At least, it sounds like it. And smart. And awesome. (can you tell I'm sucking up to get you to recap Desperate Housewives? That show is a laugh-fest waiting to happen!)

Regardless, if you don't, I'll look back on these days and laugh.

Although, I'm surprised you didn't mention Greg carrying DK. First Leila, then Taylor, now DK!?

Anyway, Justamom: About that interview, could we work things out via email? I don't really want to leave comments back and forth. Ha.
Laurel, if you read this, your singing was fantastic at the end of the episode. :)

-Derek512

JasonIst:

If you continue to "write" you need to seriously consider consulting a dictionary... or at least a spell checker. Christ, you spelled a word two different ways, both wrong, in the same sentence last week.

Justamom:

Derek:

Give me your email address.

Thanks

Farrell100:

Dr. McSteeny, CBS should give you some kind of compensation, as I think I've metioned previously. NO WAY would I have gotten hooked on this show without your recaps. Just a fantastic, snarky job all season.

I screamed when I saw the red-headed Mom, and knew immediately it was Laurel's mom!!! I was SO pissed Laurel didn't get one of those $50k stars. What the hell?! She was CLEARLY a consistent leader who was well liked by all. Laurel was robbed!

I didn't know Michael's dad was ever a commentator here! I LOVE MICHAEL and wrote glowing compliments about him early in the season on the CBS site. He is an incredibly articulate kid, and a cutie.

I will bet my last bottom dollar that THOSE WHO SPAWNED TAYLOR avoided the cameras like the plague after reading these recaps, and other blogs of the same ilk.

Jared deserves his own TV series. Simple as that.

Laurel, Michael, Sophia, Jared, Morgan, Nathan, etc. You Guyz are terrfic. I wish you all the best of luck and I'll miss seeing you every week :o(

Hugs From Rhode Island. Your loyal Fan, Farrell100

Derek512:

Also, McSteeny: are you by chance from Pennsylvania? That Penn State comment really excited me. My Aunt went to college there.

Pappy:

McSteeny, Awesome...as always....simply awesome...

As for Dexter's first MILF from the show, it would have to be Colton's mom...at least I think it was Colton...young, showing the goods, but not a whole lot, just enough...hot...deffinately a MILF. Woot!

I stopped my DVR when Taylor's mom appeared...just what I thought she would look like...MILF wanna be, probably former cheerleader, dumped by the former QB that was sleeping around the whole time on her, but when she found out he left her and the little bitch spawn they had, trying to live her life through her pretty little angel....ick...Hate...

Hope you get another show to recap. Your recaps made me day...good luck with dex...oh, I think I can help you with that. Turn to him, and simply say....hey...you wanna fu**?

He is a guy after all...

:)

i know dexter got over and all but if kidnation doesnt have anouther season u should do dexter as a recap
i no i would read them

CHRISW78:

So it's all over. I'm a 29 year old male and probably not the demographic that CBS is aiming for with this show but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the whole season. Without Dr. McSteeny's recaps the show would have only been half as good. I must admit that I teared up during the last show(just a little). It was kinda funny to see Jared's father doing a Soda bomb. It was also good to see Laurels mom also. I was much like McSteeny thinking how cool it was that she read the recaps and posted comments. It was a bittersweet show to be sure. I was very happy to hear the kids telling the golden boy Johnathan to burn the damn Manipulation Handbook. I certainly would like to see some changes if there is to be a next season. One would be that stupid book. I think the show would be a lot more honest if there really were no adult influence in the town. More mayhem please! Also the idea that the CBS camera crews have fast enough transportation that they can get to the gold star winners house by the time it took the winner to run out of the council meeting to the phone house never sat right with me. Im sure the military would love to have the rights to whatever kind of plane that is. Oh well I dont want to nitpick too much. I loved it and I will watch next season. McSteeny Im glad to hear that you will be finishing up Grey's anatomy. Another show that I'm sure is not aimed at a straight 29 year old male but hey what can I say? Its either stay home and watch T.V. or out spending money in a bar. I like the cheaper alternative.

Also McSteeny I must agree with Pappy about Dex. Sometimes you just got to be straight up with us dumb guys. I know that Ive been hit on and didn't know it till one of my girlfriends was like hey dumb ass that girl was digging you.

P.S. Alright sister dearest Ill see you at the Grey's post. I know its not reality T.V. but you'll just have to make a sacrifice and read it anyway. Love you.

Dear Doc,
Great recap as ususal. The funniest thing about that last day in Bananza City was the fact that I could hardly recognize Michael. His hair was even longer than normal, he seemed taller, and a lot tanner than he would have been if he stayed in Monroe WA. for 40 days. I wasn't sure it was him until he jumped into my arms. As strange as the whole experience may seems to those who watched the show, Michael loved it. I will always be thankful to Laurel (GREAT JOB Laurels mom) for picking Michael for the Green team. I think he really will have some friends for life.
Thanks again, you kept me laughing for the last 13 weeks.

fire@will:

A truly outstanding job of recapping, which not only enhanced the show, but also attracted a great group of diverse commenters.

I, too, teared up at the final episode, just like I do when I watch the only "genuine" baseball on TV - the Little League World Series.

I'm almost old enough to have gone to school with Abe Lincoln, but I still felt like I was in the presence of friends. Great job - McSteeny, commenters, parents and, of course, kids.

Happy Holidays!

mand2282:

Hey Laurel's mom - LOVED the show! I never missed one episode! Can you give us an update on how Laurel and any of the kids she keeps in touch with are doing?

mand2282:

Hey Laurel's Mom and Mike's Dad - LOVED the show! Can you give us an update on how Laurel and Mike and any of the other kids they keep in touch with are doing?

McSteeny:

Hi Guys!

Derek: Not from Pennsylvania. Born and raised in New York. (Went to college in Massachusetts- hence the love/hate relationship with Boston.

Thanks for a wonderful season everyone! Agreed that it felt like a little group of friends.

I'll be recapping the rest of the Grey's Anatomy season when the new episodes return. Then I'll recap Real World Road Rules Challenge when it starts in March. Maybe a little something in between, who knows. Hope to hear from you all again.

Laurel's Mom, Michael's Dad, other Kid Nation parents: If any of you would like to do a post- season update, etc. on your kids, feel free to send me an email at staff@tvgasm.com, it will be forwarded to me and I can reply and keep our readers updated on our favorite pioneers! Would love to hear from you...

wthot:

Mand2282
Michael stays in touch with most of the green team members including Jimmy,(Jimmy cracks Michael up). He was really excited to talk to Laurel and her mom recently and talked to Sophia the other day. He and Sophia both have similar political views and love Stephan Colbert! DK calls now and again and I know he keeps in touch with Hunter whom he likes and admires and describes as a "true southern gentleman." Dr. Mcsteeny while Penn State would be great Michael really loves NY City and wants to go to Columbia, (damn I wish he would have won a 5 lb star!). If folks are interested I will definitely email you updates.

farrell100:

>

Michael's Dad, "your" kids belong to their public now. So allow me to respond for everybody when I say, YES we'd like updates!

I loved little Jimmy, and like everyone else here, was sorry he didn't stick around longer. I have to admit, I shed a few tears with his heartbreaking "I'm only 8 years old and too young for this" speach. Hunter was clearly a super nice kid too.

I am still hoping for a pioneer reunion show.

Lastly, as much as I enjoyed this show, it was THESE kids who made it special. I don't see how CBS could "recast" and do it again. The next group of kids would already know about the Handbook, challenges, rewards/gold stars etc. it just wouldn't be the same. I saw CBS should come up with some concept/venue to bring THESE kids back together again...

Justamom:

Laurel is just doing normal 7th grade activities. She goes to public school, hates math, loves loves loves English (she also loves to write McSteeny), she plays basketball, etc., just normal, typical 12 year old stuff.

Laurel keeps in touch with a lot of the Green District too. She is in touch almost daily with Morgan, Kennedy and DK. She also keeps in close contact with Sophia, Taylor, Michael and Hunter. We recently went to North Carolina for a visit with family and we hooked up for a quick visit with Leila.

One thing I guess I want people to know is that a lot of people sarcastically commented on how the camera crew got to the house so quickly when the star was handed out...so, to set the record straight this is how it happened. :)

Before the kids went on the show we were not aware of any gold stars or money. They told us there MAY be a chance your child might get to call home during the 40 day period. The producers would call us every three days with an update of how our child was doing but we were not allowed to actually speak with our child.

If you notice, the day before the Town Hall Meeting (where the Council gives out the star), the kids all line up and come in separately and vote for who they want to get the star. Usually, the council would talk about it and narrow it down to like 2 kids at that point. We got a phone call the day before Laurel called us and we were told there could be a chance Laurel MAY call home can we send a camera crew to film the phone call. When the camera crew came, they explained, Laurel MAY call and she MAY not.

The night Laurel won, I believe it was down to her and Hunter (love Hunter). Anyway, I think (but I'm not sure) they had a camera crew at Hunter's house that night too. So, when she called I knew she MAY call but I did not know anything about a star.

Actually the crew was here for about 4 hours before she called and I was beginning to think she wasn't going to call.

There were a bunch of camera crews in Bonanza and I think different crews focused on different kids during the Town Hall Meetings. When that certain kid won, thats the footage they went with.

But it's so funny when people come on different msg boards saying the parents must have known about the stars -- we absolutely did not.

As for how the other kids are doing, everyone seems to be doing well. They are sad their wonderful adventure has come to an end but everyone is doing good.

Lady-in-Gray:

We are sad too, Justamom.

I absolutely LOVED this show. What a wonderful opportunity it was for these kids to learn, and grow and have a great adventure, too!

A big thanks to all of the parents for allowing their children to do this. And, a great big thanks to all of the children who participated.

CHRISW78:

JUSTAMOM, Thanks for explaining the star process. I figured that it was something like you explained but wasnt sure. So the real question is when will we see Laurel on American Idol?

Splotchie:

McSteeny, thanks for a really great run. I'll miss your recaps - I don't watch Grey's [gasp!]. I do hope you will recap something else I will watch soon. You are such a talented writer. I'd love for us to just hang out, that's how entertaining you are.

And thank you for agreeing to repost the seduction. What a hoot, been there done that, baby! I personally don't think that you should take the wanna fu** advice. I agree that men are incredibly dense, but take it from me, if you gotta ask for it, it probably isn't going to be very good. I'm mid 40's, never married [shudder] and have had more than my fair share of men and those that were the prey, uh I mean, pursuees always ended up causing real problems, usually in the self-esteem area [unfortunately, mine].

Thanks also to Justamom and wthot. As I'm sure you are aware, your kids were real crowd favorites mainly because of their maturity. Nice job of raising them.

McSteeny, loved your future predictions, especially Greg's. And just so you know, Dexter has no real talent for what you do. Nothing inspired at all in his predictions.

I'd especially love to hear from Greg or Greg's parents. He may have taken offense at some of the recaps and comments about him [he's sensitive, afterall], but he was always one of my favorites and I always thought highly of him even when he was misbehaving a bit.

puggyluv78:

every now an then I'm forced by my man to sit through low-budget hunting shows on the OLN channel.

Imgine my SHOCK when I saw Taylor and her dad on there...she was so cue and sweet. Not at al the stuck up queen bee we saw on this show. Her poor parent's must have no clue what and uber-bitch she was acting like.

Check it out on OLN...her fmil is on there pretty often. I still really dislike her though

farrell100:

what channel is OLN? What's OLN stand for?

shelley:

OMg, did i get a shout out from McSteeny? It was spelled wrong so it must have been me ;) Whatevs, I'm pretending it is. I was just now able to read the recap and comments (at work) and it seriously brought back the sadness that I felt last week! But it's neat to keep hearing updates...def. agree on the reunion shows!!

Chris...29 and choosing tv over bars?? sounds like my kinda man!

zebradingo:

Hey everyone this is Jared's Dad and I just wanted to give you a little update on what he has been doing since the show ended. He went with his grandparents for about 3 weeks this summer in their RV and then we went on a family trip to the gateway of the west.

Just so everyone knows Jared is skipping a grade in school in a couple of weeks and has been accepted into the fast track program for math. So by the end of this year he will have gone from 6th grade to mid 8th grade in math. We are really excited about this as it will allow him to possibly miss an answer with it not being a careless mistake. LOL

On the social front he is making a lot of headway there. It seems like the girls in his school are always asking if he has a girlfriend or if he will sign their arm with a sharpie. Good thing they are on school property or they would be asking for something else to be signed. He keeps in touch with a bunch of the people from the show and we visit them whenever we are close by.

I will say that he has stolen his first kiss and it was a girl from the show. I will not say who it was but will sit back and watch as this ignites discussion on that topic. I can see her mom freaking out as she reads this.

As to my drinking on the last show. What are you supposed to say when you haven't seen your son in 40 days and he says can I make you a drink but SURE and then down the most disgusting and sugary drink in the world.

Jared is the DANCEMAN. He beats everyone who comes over to the house on the DDR. Video games are a drug to him and if we did not keep the DS locked in the safe he would be up at 4am to play it. It was no shock to us to see him sneak into the arcade. After all if they REALLY wanted it closed they would have locked it. Right?

He did have a few necklaces left over at the end of the show and we are thinking about listing them on ebay if people would like them say something here and I will see if he will part with them so that he can buy the new DDR songs he wants.

We have all loved the show and the recaps here and nobody is more upset that he didn't get a gold star than he is. But he does want Jonathan's job as host if they do a season 2. That way it can really be a Kid Nation.

McSteeny:

Jared's Dad!! Hi and welcome! So glad to hear from you. Let me tell you, you took that shot like a man. Soda dripping down the hand and everything!

Obviously you know how much we all love Jared around here. Not suprising at all to hear that he is skipping a grade. As for the first kiss...LOVE IT!! Dying to know who it is. Just dying!

I can't express enough how thrilled I am to hear from Kid Nation parents as a whole. I don't think any other show on this site gets this much inside information on the show and cast, I am truly honored!

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE a Bonanza necklace- give me the details and name the price and I will certainly take one!

Michael's Dad: You know I'm in favor of a NYC school. Nice to hear the green team is staying in touch.

Laurel's mom- thanks a million for the in depth star info. It certainly explains a lot, and hopefull quiets the doubters! Tell Laurel to keep writing!

These updates mean so much to me and I'm sure it means a lot to the readers. Please continue to comment and/or send me emails with continued updates, interviews, etc! We love them!

-McSteeny

Jared's Dad!!!! YIPPEE

Whebn I saw they poisting name "zebradingo", I assumed it was one of Guylan's parents.

Will the recaping gang think less of me to know that I am 44 yrs old, and incappable of SIXTH GRADE MATH?

McSteeny, If we were all in a room someplace, bidding in a slitent auction for Kid Nation memrobelia, I would absolutely buy you that Kid-Nation-Jared necklace. Aside from the kids, no one deserves it more than you.

warof7:

msteeny
i must that my favorite recaps is itys just the rootbeer talking
laurels mom i have been wondering how they did that since day one but i firqued it had to be something like what they did

pappy44:

Jared's dad! Sweet! I loves me some Jared! What an awesome kid. My favorite scene from the show was when he was in that hammock that Sophia came over and trapped him in. He was all, WHAT DID I DO TO YOU? She is all, NOTHING....lol...omg, couldn't stop laughing...

I think it would be neat to have some of the kids come on the site and tell us themselves about what they are doing. But in lieu of that, hearing from the parents is great. I can't wait 10 years (or even 5) from now when they have the inevetitable (sp?) reunion show.

As parents, you should all be proud...well, maybe not taylor's parents, but proud non-the-less.

Oh, and Laurel's mom, when can we expect a recording contract to come Laurel's way? I am a former music teacher, and I am telling you (not that you don't know already!) that she has an incredible voice! She sounds a lot like Eden Riegel (former Bianca on All My Children, played young Cossette in the Original cast of Les Mis.).

McSteeny:

Thanks Farrell100.

Sorry for the misspell Shelley. I did mean you, I was just shooting off names by memory.

zebradingo:

Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you know that by midnight tonight there will be a necklace listed on ebay. I still have to locate them and take a picture ect... In order to find it you can look up jared kid nation necklace. or just look for me by the seller. same login as here. Jared is hoping to be visiting Zach Sophia Blaine, Natasha, and Taylor in the next couple of weeks.

Please remember when you are saying not so nice things that the parents do read it and we are still talking about kids. Some of us realize that our kids are quirky and weird but some of the things that have been said about the kids can only be seen as hurtful. And they are still little children and there is a lot that we did not get to see from the show.

I wish that they would show another season of only what happened when the kids were not participating in challenges ect... Just the kids being themselves, even if they had to show it on Sat mornings or at 3 am. There is so much that happened that we can not talk about.

This experience has been the greatest for Jared and I hope that everyone remembers his name and face so that in 8 or 9 years when he invents a way to teleport something other than subatomic particles you can say "well I guess he doesn't need that Gold Star now." LOL

mand2282:

Kid Nation Parents - Jared's Dad,Laurel's Mom, Michael's Dad -
thanks so much for the updates! It's so great to hear the kids are doing well. I hope they all know that each of them is starting to have their own little fan clubs across the country! Keep the updates coming!

To Michael's Dad, Laurel's Mom, and Jared's Parents, thank you for allowing your kids to be on the show. They're all incredible and I've enjoyed watching them every week. I wish them the best of luck in the future.

To Michael's Dad and Laurel's Mom - I'm in the process of creating a fansite dedicated to the Green District and I was wondering if it would be okay if I added your "Where are they now?" updates? It would be much appreciated.

I only discovered this forum today, I wish I'd known about it when the show started. Until now I'd been posting on tv.com, but it looks like this is the more popular place for discussion.
Since the show is now over, at least for this season, there isn't much left to discuss. But I do want to extend my thanks to CBS for coming up with this unique idea in the first place (and airing all 13 episodes in sequence, despite low ratings) and to the parents for letting their kids be a part of this. This show really inspired my imagination, and made me wish I was 15 years younger so I could have been a part of this myself. It also reminded me a lot of a western-themed summer camp I attended at age 11 (which looked a lot like Bonanza city, actually). Too bad I didn't have much fun at that camp....
I'd appreciate it if any of the parents, fans, or anyone else could E-mail everyone (or make a post), letting us know in advance of any talk-show interviews or the like, as I rarely get a chance to check what's on the talk and entertainment news shows.
I look forward to what the next season has in store, and I hope we haven't seen the last of everyone from season 1.

I only discovered this forum today, I wish I'd known about it when the show started. Until now I'd been posting on tv.com, but it looks like this is the more popular place for discussion.
Since the show is now over, at least for this season, there isn't much left to discuss. Hey McSteeny,

I love your recaps. Any chance you'll be doing the second season of the Scott Baio show? I still can't forget about Johnny leftovers.

I'm from Barcelona (Spain) and it was very hard for me to watch the show from here. But I did it! And I love it!

Thank you very much!

Best wishes from Barcelona!!
