After she shoots Colleen in her filthy Other guts, the rest of the Others return fire. Sayid and Jin hear this from the jungle and race out to the boat. Sun frantically races back below deck and tries to open a top hatch to escape from the boat. She just barely makes it overboard while the others rain bullets down upon her. But they are friendly happy bullets, because the Others you see, are the good guys!
Jin races to the end of the dock towards the boat which is pulling away and dives into the water. He swims around screaming something in Korean. I am assuming it is the Korean word for "Marco" because soon he hears Sun utter what I also assume is the Korean word for "Polo" and they both embrace in the water.
From here they cut right to the flashback. Sun is at the funeral of Jae Lee crying in the background when her father comes up behind her and surprises her. When she asks what he is doing there he says that he des business with his father. "I'm told he jumped from a balcony" her father says. "He must have felt great shame." Before she leaves she asks her father if he will tell Jin about what happened. He tells her that it is not his place to say anything. Back on the island, Jin is giving Sun a blanket for warmth as they sit on the beach. Sayid apologizes for dragging them into this, and they start to walk back to camp.
On the Other part of the island, Kate and Sawyer are back in their cells after a hard days work. "What the hell we're you thinking?" Kate says (Ummm, Kate? Sawyers not the one who sat there like a wet lump. He actually tried to escape). Sawyer then explains to her what he learned from his little encounter with the guards. "Two of those guards got some real fight in 'em. The rest of them I'm not worried about. The heavyset guy packs a hell of a punch. Shaggy haired kid got some sort of martial arts training but I think I can take him if I had to. And FYI, that zapper things got a safety on it." Then he tells Kate that the woman, Juliet, who had the gun pointed at her, would have killed her without a problem. "Why'd she call you James?" Kate asks. "Because that's my name.' Sawyers says. After that we cut to inside the underwater station and see Ben in front aof a series of monitors watching and listening to Sawyers entire conversation.
Ben then goes in to talk to Jack, sitting in the corner in his cell. He jokes about how just a week ago the tables were turned. He ties to make excuses as to whyhe lied to them before about who he is. If he told them he was an Other, they would have sent him to sayids fists. "What do you want from me?" jack asks weakly. "I want you to change your... perspective." Ben tells him. Then he says he wants to introduce himself to him honestly. "Hi. My name is Benjanim Linus and I've lived on this island all my life." All his life? Is he lying? Have the Others been here that long? Are they kidnapping them to help keep their mini civilization going? Who knows. Maybe we'll never know.
When Jack won't shake his hand Ben gets up and says "Bring it in please" to someone from outside who brings in a television set. Ben then turns to Jack and says "If you cooperate, we'll send you home." "Cooperate with what?" Jack says. "When the time is right we'll tell you." Ben answers.
Jack doesn't believe him. "Home? Is that were you sent Walt and Michael?" He asks incredulously. Then, finally he asks the question I have been asking since the Others first made an appearance on this show years ago. "If you could leave this island why would you still be here?" THANK YOU! Hallelujah someone finally said it. Ben just looks at him and says "Yes Jack, why would we still be here?" Sigh, I suppose I didn't actually expect a straight forward answer, but it still feels good knowing someone at least asked it. And now we get to the "wow" moment of this otherwise slow paced episode. Jack says he's lying so Ben then proves that he isn't, in a most dramatic way.

Wow. Okay so Sun did have an affair. She does seem to lie a lot. Who cares! I love Sun and Jin. I thought this was a pretty good ep all in all. Still no answers really but next week should help. Juliette seems like one cold bitch even Sawyer said she wouldn't have hesitated to kill Kate. I really don't miss some of the other characters but I will be happy to see some I guess. I hope Locke is back to his old self

funniest line was when the guy monitoring sawyer and kate was like "i see you talking you'll get shock"
sawyer "i dont even get a warning?@?!?!"
guy "SHOCKED. I SAID SHOCKED (shows the tazer)"
haha. this was an interesting episode, but i am kind of losing interest in the whole "were GOOD people, HONEST!"

Benry and Juliet are offspring of the original Dharma experiment colony and are former bun buddies who could not reproduce so one blames the other for faulty reproductive organs, thus the strained relationship????? (they seem to old to be offspring tho)
Jin and Sun are interesting but these past storylines go on to long.
They ending was GREAT....YES, someone finally asked one of the right questions.
Loved your view of the multiple tv monitors....great TVGASM moment.
Looking forward to seeing Desmond naked next week.

Great recap, EdHIll, inspite of the pronoun & first name confusion.
The Others are so galling. They kill, torture and kidnap but still expect their prisoners to like them. The Others must have a some serious inferiority complexes.
Can't wait to see next week's episode and what happened in the hatch.

Jash, I thought that was funny too (shocked)!
Okay, is LOST, BF Skinner, utopian society meets psychological operations? Like the extremists of both sides came together and concocted this island to do continual testing? I guess, unsuspecting people (plane crash survivors) would make the best test subjects.
Yeah, I thought the show should have been, "Sun is one bigass liar", instead of glass ballerina, whatever.

I dont think Sayid would beat out old Jack Bauer
I bet it would only take Jackie a day to get off that island....

Never trust a man with two first names.
Who didn't see Jae coming onto the hood of the car Jin was sitting in? I mean they kept the shot on it for a few seconds.
Looks to me like the chaingang was working on making a clearing for a landing strip. You wouldn't just remove rocks/debris then pound it down for a nice footpath that wide.
Question everyone is probably thinking of, how soon before flight 815 did the Sun & Jae trist take place?

Not to beat a dead horse or anything but Kate being grabbed AGAIN really makes me think she is working with the others. The encounter with Alex could just mean that she is one of them she hasn't met. And as for making her break rocks, well her boss told her at their working breakfast last week that the next two weeks would be hard.

Oh you missed something that Alex said that was quick and easily looked over!!
When she asked Kate about Carl... Alex said something about Kate not supposed to be in the cage.
:o
What could THAT mean??
Why is Kate not supposed to be in that cage?
And from the sound of it.. Carl wasn't a spy to get on Sawyer's good side.
I really want to see crazy French lady and her daughter reunite. It would be SO interesting to see what happens.
And damnit! They better show the significance of the huge 4toed statue!

Thank you, Shollia!
I am shocked that it wasn't in the recap - I had to rewind my DVR several times to see if Alex said "HE shouldn't have even been in there" or if was "YOU weren't even supposed to be in there". Obviously it was the latter....
This was a good episode, but I'm so anxious to see what's going on on the island that these long flashbacks are frustrating.
I know we're all trying to figure out how long ago the tryst with Sun was, and I wonder if there was anything in the flashbacks that would have told us what month it was...any newspapers laying around? Then we'll know who the baby-daddy is.

With all the questions left over from last season I am getting frustrated with all the time spent doing flashbacks.
Basically what happened is that Sawyer and Kate did some work, Jack sat around. And Sayid Jin & Sun lost the boat. Other than that it was a too-long flashback.
I wonder if Walt's boat is going to circle back and end up back on the island.
Oh, Trixie! I recognized her but couldn't quite figure out who that was. Deadwood was cancelled? :(

I've heard a few people mention that Sun may have finished off Jae because she was holding the necklace before Jin left and it was in Jae's hand when he hit the car, I suppose it's possbile but if that's true then Sun is maybe a little crazy.

nice recap
I know the flashbacks are a necessary evil. Seems like they could be more concise.
I can't believe Trixie is a filthy other. I hope they quit introducing others. There's too many of them already.

Ok, my Korean might be a little weak, but when Jin jumped into the water and came up bellowing, there was not a doubt in my mind that he was yelling, in Korean.....WALT!!!!
I'm a little disappointed that the recap did not include what might be my favorite pick-up line ever, "You taste like fish cookies."

"Only Jin can give her the real insulting chauvinistic dismissals that she craves." seeing what Sun's dad is like, maybe she (or the women in general) are taught/trained/brainwashed since youth to like that sort of thing, otherwise the whole system would fall apart....
I really thought the girl in the bushes said that carl (HE) wasn't suppose to be in a cage. It drives me nuts how she just randomly shows up, at least she helped Claire, I guess.
You taste like fish cookies cracked me up, a damn good line.

Sawyer's "How dare you" was one of the funniest LOST moments I've seen in a while. Right up there with "What are you gonna do?! Splash me?!" .
Maynerd- Awesome! Last week when Jack asked his ex "what's his name?" my sister and I wailed "WAAAALT!"
Ed Hill- dont be gettin yourself on the Korean mob hit list. We need your recaps!

Leah3t,
I agree, the Sawyer "How dare you!" scene was so funny! I had forgotten about "What are you gonna do? Splash me?!" but that one was great too.
I thought "You taste like fish biscuits" was pretty good too. I love Sawyer. :-)

October is apparently The Women Of Deadwood month. Trixie was also on ER this week.
Last week it was Jane (Robin Weigert) on episodes of The Unit and Law&Order.
I'm gonna miss Deadwood something awful.

I think Jack is going to die, while Kate and Sawyer escape. His backstory is all wrapped up. He gave up on his curiosity about his ex-wife and just wants her to be happy. We now know why Jack was so guilt ridden over his dads death. There's nothing left to tell. And he has become one of the more boring characters.

Maybe when Ben said he lived there all his life, he meant that metaphorically. Like his life didn't really begin until he lived there. The Others almost sound religious when they talk about changing perspective and whatnot.
Jack asks him why he would stay there if they could leave-I wouldn't mind living there either if I was living in a nice little house with no real job and access to the outside world-not to mention a book club!

I thought Jae Lee committed suicide, by jumping off the balcony himself cause he could leave Sun. I didnt remember a noose around him neck--then again it was a shocking moment so i could have easily missed it.
I'm thinking that Sawyer and KAte are doing the forced labor b/c they killed two of the Others. The Other's attitude/treatment towards them compared to Jack is totally different. Maybe the other prisoners attacked the Others at some point.
Colleen told Sun that if she shot her, they'd be enemies. This kind of explains why Sun was being shot at as she tried to escape--b/c she shot Colleen and the return fire towards Sun indicated to the Others on the deck that she must have initially attacked.
I hate to make excuses for the OThers cause I hate them so. They provoked this hostility against them to begin with.

Loved "kate is the worst dangerous fugitive ever" god she sucks, i mean didn't she just have a pickax in her hand? but Im still not ready to buy into her working with the others
so the degroots went to the island in the 70s--doesn't Benry look a bit old to have been born there? and if he has been there all that time, how did he not know about the sailboat?
another ?--so the button just doesn't need to be pushed anymore...how is that possible? does that mean the electromagnetic force is down?
I can't wait for some hurley this week
of and kiss---aaawwww--- it was so sweet---love sawyer, the others can keep Jack

I'm confused about this underwater hatch, how do you know they are underwater in the ocean, what if thay have huge aquariums hidden on the island filled with sharks and dolphins for them to do tests on.

i agree with the comments about introducing more characters. i dont give a piss about more Others until we see the Season 1 gang! i know locke and ecko are this week, but for damn sake, when are we gonna see claire, charlie, and hurley. or even penny and dezi and the arctic global monitoring station thingy???? damn, i'd rather see bernard than more freakin' Others.
i'm starting to get irritated... i can tell my frustration with a show by the rotation of viewing in my tivo... Lost used to be 2nd only to 24. Now, it has fallen behind Grey's, Heroes, the Nine, Survivor and my new #1 Studio 60. Hell i even watched RW/RR Challenge the Duel last week before Lost. That says alot ppl... gettin' bored already... let's move it along!!!!

re: post#12
Sun did not have the pearl necklace in her hand in the apartment. She had a glossy black dinner plate that had a white rim on the bottom. Though I did not mistake it for the necklace at the time, when I reviewed the tape to see where the heck it was Sun was holding this necklace she hadn't accepted in the first place, I immediately spotted the plate as the source of your confusion. It did sorta look like the necklace... if I squinted at the TV :D
