Family Matters -
by B-Side
There's nothing we like more at TVgasm than an old fashioned cat fight, or -- as it's called when men are involved -- a feud. We've had some good ones this year -- Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan, Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields, The Game and 50 Cent (twice!) -- but now Blender Magazine is reporting in its upcoming issue that the next big clash will surely be the most animated yet. Yes, Family Guy is taking on The Simpsons after the latter show depicted Peter Griffin as a clone of Homer Simpson last season. Upset with the implication that his series is just a cheap knockoff, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane called the gag "a definite slam," and shot back that The Simpsons is "not the show it was. It can't be. You can't do sixteen seasons and be consistent." Meeeeow!
With any luck, The Family Guy will take a few potshots at its elderly predecessor, thus heralding a new generation of inter-cartoon feuding. In the meantime, we can pass the days thinking of other animated characters we'd love to see in a smackdown. Fred Flintstone vs. George Jetson? Huey and Dewey vs. Chip and Dale? Lion-O vs. He-Man? The possibilities are endless!
What do you think? Which cartoons would you like to see go at it? And is Family Guy in its prime better than The Simpsons in its prime? Or does South Park just dwarf them all?

Comments
Family Guy beats The Simpsons ANY day of the week.

Holly, no offense, but The Simpsons is still the best animated show on TV (not to mention one of the best shows period).
I will admit the Golden Era of The Simpsons was seasons 3 to 8, but even the more recent episodes are consistently funnier than the Family Guy, which I too find funny.
My problem with The Family Guy is that it does not have the re-watchability that The Simpsons or South Park have.
For me, there's no need or desire to watch a re-run of Family Guy. The show doesn't seem to have as many layers as The Simpsons or even South Park.
As an aside, even the writers of The Simpsons have joked about the complaint that the shows are not as funny as they once were. In the episode (May 2004) where Homer was Pie Man, Pie Man threw a pie in Krusty's face because of the slight decline in quality of Krusty's show over the years.

The Simpsons and Family Guy are my 1st and 2nd favorite shows respectively. The Simpsons at it's best is the smartest, funniest satire in the history of television. At it's worst it's still one of the funniest and most creative shows on tv.
Family Guy is not a rip off. They are 2 great shows, and they shouldn't feel the need to compete with each other just because they're both cartoons.
And neither one should be compared to South Park. At their worst they still make South Park look like ignorant, infantile crap.

It's pretty simple.
The Simpsons is one of the funniest shows ever.
Family Guy is one of the worst ever.

Why will they not let The Simpsons die? It's not even close to the same show anymore. It's like keeping Monty Python alive for another 10 years, but with only Eric Idle and a bunch of Americans. Family Guy is at least a worthy successor to the good years of the Simpsons, which is more than you can say for the latter years of the Simpsons.

Oooh,I smell a comment fued!
Family Guy is the funniest show on TV right now after South Park. They have an edginess and daring that Simpsons doesn't have. They are fearless.
Simpsons is just way way past its prime. The Ray Romano episode was painful to watch. They may still have "layers" when you rewatch them, but since the first layer is boring and unfunny, I dont stick around for the others.

Simpsons in its prime was the original, and while Family Guy admits that it takes some things from that era of Simpsons, it's still a different show. That being said, I prefer old Simpsons to Family Guy, but currently Family Guy is a funnier show than the current Simpsons.
Why the hate on South Park? South Park is by a far a more intelligent show than Family Guy, it uses subtletly in its critiques rather than obvious pop culture references. And while things like the "Shit" episode aren't subtle, they're taken to a ridiculous extreme to make a point about shows using shock value to promote an upcoming episode(NYPD Blue especailly).
Most South Park episodes have something to say about pop culture or society, and they usually find an interesting way to say it. Most Family Guy shows are just gag-fests(which are funny too), but aren't as well-written as South Park.

Fact is, Family Guy's frequent pop references and fart jokes will soon grow old. Then, people will complain that the show is no longer fresh and edgy. Then, it'll be just as crappy as American Dad. Check back with me in 16 years. We'll se which show is part still part of the popular lexicon.
(BTW.. I too like fart jokes. I literally fell out off my chair laughing when Stewie burst a blood vessel in his eye from farting. God, I love the little bastard!).
The Simpsons is the originator ---I will not count "Wait 'til Your Father Gets Home" from the 70's (showing my age)--- that all others aspire. As proved by South Park's "The Simpsons Did It" episode.

Poop and fart jokes are always funny.
Always.

Ok, 1. I was unaware this Family Guy Blender was out, I must go buy it.
2. I love both shows to death. Simpsons is a classic, it's the Godfather of primetime cartoons. Blast it all you want, but it's the F*CKING SIMPSONS!!!
However, Family Guy is just brilliant and I can't say a bad thing about it.
South Park, eh, I wouldn't really mention them in the same breath as the other two.

I love both shows, but we now see the formulatic way of The Simpsons. It's interesting how they get from one small incident(Homer discovers a book or something) which leads to the main plot involving the whole town 10 minutes later. Mind you, the 1st season of The Simpsons was almost devoid of humor. And there's only so many bandwagons Homer can hop onto.
Family Guy OTOH doesn't have that luxury. Incredibly racy humor is a staple of teh show and I like it. I also like the numerous 80s references Peter makes. The only formulatic part of Family Guy I can think of is the "imagination" or "remember that one time" bits, which are always funny.
C'mon the Simpsons has been on for 17 seasons. Time to let things go.
Man Tracy Ullman's gotta be pissed that a 5-minute tack-on subshow of hers is STILL on after 17 seasons while her show got the boot. Oh, and her former coworkers are still employed.

My boyfriend just started making me watch Family Guy about two months ago and I have begrudgingly resigned to the fact that it's really funny.
Simpsons, however, although very funny, is very tired. I would probably turn my TV off before I would watch a new episode or an old episode. And where there was once "cowabunga dude", there is now "What the deuce?"
However, the crap bag that is South Park is not allowed to be viewed in our home...

Olive Oyle v. Veronica
Muppet Babies v. Fraggle Rock
Alvin v. Beavis
Chilly Willy v. Pokemon
Tom & Jerry v. Sylvestor & Tweety
She-Ra v. Wonder Woman

I'd like Launchpad McQuack vs. all his demons.
'cause you know he's got some.

hahah! launch pad was dropped when he was a small duckling. don't make fun.

In no particular order, I'd like to see:
Dastardly and Muttley vs Shaggy and Scooby
Huckleberry Hound vs Augie Doogie
Snagglepuss vs the Pink Pather
Punkin Puss And Mush Mouse vs Tom and Jerry
Magilla vs Grape Ape
Top Cat vs Heathcliff
Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-long vs Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey
Zendor (Herculoids) vs HeMan
The Schmoo vs Gleep and/or Gloop
Arthur (from the Tick) vs Waylon Smithers

Hey... hasn't anyone ever wanted to see Daffy Duck in a Steel Cage Deathmatch with Donald?
And what about Hong Kong Fuey #1 Super Guy vs. Underdog?
Simpsons vs. Family Guy - See, I would TOTALLY do Homer, whereas with Peter, I'd probably only go down on him.
End of discussion.

I like the Simpsons. I just think it's waaay past its prime. And when you're talkin about the episodes coming out NOW, the Simpsons isn't even in the same league as Family Guy. Why do people feel so threatened that a new cartoon family is in town? heheheh...
The humor on Family Guy is completely fresh and original and in touch with today's culture. It's totally different from the Simpsons. EVERY CHARACTER in Family Guy is hilarious in his/her own way, while the Simpsons just relies on Homer over and over again to be a dumbass. Plus Family Guy has TONS of satirical, ironic, *intelligent* wit and humor (read: Stewie and Brian).
I'm not sure I understand the crack about farting and pop culture. I don't recall farting on Family Guy. That's not to say it hasn't happened (heheh), but not enough for it to stick out as THE gag of the show. As far as pop culture, I don't see what's wrong with that. The only people I remember being cameoed (sp?) on there are people who've been famous for YEARS. It's not like they're doing cameos on Hillary Duff.

I just thought of something outta the blue--a good metaphor for how I compare the Simpsons and Family Guy. It's like Jay Leno and Conan O'brien. We all know who gets top billing. But who do ya love the most? Well, I know who *I* love the most... Conan!
Doesn't mean I don't like Jay or think he's funny. I just think Conan has more edge and originality and natural wit to appeal to today's culture. Possibly it's cause he's younger or cause he's had more free reign to play around with new ideas (since he has a later time slot). But whatever it is, he taps the pulse of younger (under 30) people in ways Jay just can't.
(p.s. I'm not curtailing the fact that Conan wrote for the Simpsons. I know that. BUT--when did he write for them? Yep, that's right... 10 years ago.)
