Ground Control To Major Tom -
by B-Side
When our friend at Access Hollywood told us to Tivo tonight's special half-hour dedicated to Tom Cruise, we knew something had to be up. After all, we were still reeling from his loopy, "I swear I'm in love!" performance on Oprah where he became daytime television's reigning couch-surfer. Well, we weren't disappointed. The Billy Bush exposé revealed that Tom might be nuttier than we ever thought. He rebuked psychiatry, saying there was no science behind it, and when asked about people who've sworn they've been helped by therapy (people including Brooke Shields), a disdainful Tom simply replied "Look at their lives." Yes, all those pitiful people who don't have fifteen blockbusters to their name. FOR SHAME, heathen non-superstars! How you have relied on your elixirs and so-called brain sciences to cure your problems!
Anyway, enjoy this very brief montage of Tommy boy on Access Hollywood, and be sure to watch how in the first clip Cruise switches from jovial laughter to extreme intensity on the turn of the dime.

Yikes! He is SUCH a freak!

He's rebuking psychiatry, not so much psychology. Psychiatrists are trained in medicine and therefore prescribe medications. Ol' L. Ron decided that mind drugs were bad, and turned his flock against psychiatrists.
Tommy boy recently made a statement to the effect that Scientology (TM) has the only effective treatment for addiction. This statement was both ignorant and grandiose, much like everything else he's ever said.

My favorite line: "I mean it. That is not just words to me." Ah, what a saint. He's helping all us depressed folk by teaching us the OCD-inducing ways of a giant pyramid scheme.
I also love how towards the end, Frank TJ Mackey starts making that Kubrickesque, eyeballs-rolled-up-to-the-brow face. It's hilarious. But also sad.

Man I love watching PR campaigns go up in smoke. I've heard so many TC defenders this week trying to figure out whats going on inside that loopy head. Gee, I dunno twenty years of having people constantly kiss your ass might acutally have an impact on your self image and ego? Oops I'm sorry Mr. Cruise, I didn't mean to make eye contact with you. Yeesh.
Props to u IndianJones01. Thats some funny shit.

I think this man himself needs serious help. I watched the show and was left shaking my head at the end, it is fine for people to have their own opinions but to put down people who have used effective treatments to help them with their problems is irresposible. It seems he likens himself to a God who can help everyone. I agree that everyone should run especially away from his latest movie, maybe then he will get the message.

For years, Hollywood scientologists like John Travolta and Tom Cruise have dodged questions and refused to get very specific about their beliefs, presumably because they and/or their PR people knew that talking too much about scientology could weird out some fans. I've heard Tom and John give very general, sugary answers then direct the interviewer to a new subject. It seems that Tom is now breaking away from that strategy by going on the record with his disdain for medications and so forth.

is- install Apple's Quicktime if you can. With any luck if you are at work your PC/LAN group won't have blocked you from being able to down load it. (mine have...bastards!)
Is there any reason that the clips are done with Quicktime rather than something Microsoft has pushed on us all? Just curious

Wendy,
We usually use iMovie or FinalCut to edit our clips. Quicktime is the easiest way to embed the clips without forcing the user to load the whole movie into the webpage. It speeds up page loading and saves us bandwidth.

You all just need to leave Tom Cruise the fuck alone. Ron L Hubbard is a GOD. Maybe Tom Cruise knows something and he's secretly telling us aliens are coming. Maybe he's flipping out because the nasty shit Katies been growin on her face has mastesized in his brain! Maybe Nicole wants custody of a bed sheet, or towels she's left him?
Maybe...just maybe...he fuckin W H A C K E D out? Who ever made the pyramid scheme analogy...VERY true. And I had not idea John Travolta was mixed up in this cult??? Makes me feel its ok to practice Wicca, because they just believe that nature finds a way, and believes in TWO gods. That doesn't flip me out at bad as scientology.

She grew up in showbiz with an alcoholic mother who had her nuded up before she was legal but somehow pulled herself together, WENT TO PRINCETON (did tom get out of high school?), had a hit TV show even though she was considered washed up, WROTE A BOOK (Tom do you know how to be a gud speler?) that helps thousands of women, and now is in a happy marriage with a beautiful baby.
Yeah what a trainwreck!!!

check out this link for some SCARY info on Scientology. As a Christian, I just don't ever have the same feelings for celebs when I find out they are Scientologists - they SEEM to be intelligent and then you find out that they believe that everything that's wrong in the world can be traced back to aliens in volcanoes... or something to that effect. Maybe since we are all not "Clear" we just don't understand. haha

freako cult members in scientology are TAUGHT how to answer reporter's questions with certain tactics
(Tom passes the test! Xemu would be proud)
Tactic (d), the most ambitious one, involves ’’handling’’ a hostile reporter there and then, through what it describes as ’’verbal karate’’. If it is a ’’genuine’’--that is, favourable--question, the PRO can answer it and, where possible, substitute his own prepared points.
If the question even in the slightest removes his total control of the situation, he should not tolerate it...for an instant, but immediately attack back, which he does either by a snide remark, question, or comment, or by physical overwhelm,’whichever seems most appropriate to maintain control of the situation.

maryberry, John Travolta's debacle "Battleship Earth" was his paean to L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology founder and sci-fi author. "Battleship" was Hubbard's last novel.
But unless you're pretty well-off they're not interested in you. I'm safe (alas), but I have a cousin who has gotten mixed up in it and is flying to Florida frequently to take yet another course.

This is what Scientology does to people. You became a brainwashed puppet in the hand of the Church of Scientology (Co$). They got their hate of psychiatry from the founder of the Co$. A former scientologist who was suffering from epilepsy, which Co$ says they can cure.
http://www.torymagoo.org/devil.htm
«She had epilepsy, which to the rest of the world is a serious, chronic illness. But to Scientologists, Bezazian's epileptic convulsions were a sure sign of a body thetan's presence.»
And worst, some have died because Co$ wouldn't want their members to use "psych" medication:
http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/JeremyPerkins/
«On March 13, 2003, Jeremy Perkins, a 28 year old untreated schizophrenic, stabbed his mother Elli 77 times.»
Disgusting. Tom Cruise is not helping anybody.
Run Katie, RUN!!!

As an atheist and all around skeptic, hearing a Scientologist use the word pseudo-science about medicine would be hilarious if it wasn't so scary that millions of people listen to this man.
HE himself is in serious need of psychiatric help. He needs the very medicine he's bitching about.
Sure, we tend to overmedicate our kids, and that is a problem, but the problem isn't the psychiatrists or the drug manufacturers, it's the parents who can't cope with their kids so they just pump them full of drugs. Maybe he should point his finger at them instead.
And that whole Brooke Shields thing... just who the fuck does this guy think he is? Post partum depression is an incredibly serious problem and he thinks you can just fix it by thinking positive thoughts and giving a tenth to the L. Ron Hubbard foundation and everything will be fine. Remind me again... how may times has he given birth? I thought so.
His idiotic ramblings remind me of that old saying:
"It is better to remain quiet and be thought a fool, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt."
What a loon.

Just checked out Narconon, the Scientology run "most successful drug treatment centre in the world" according to Tom.
Wow who knew a programme of vitamins, saunas and aerobics, and $10,000 in books could be so effective?
Noticed they state the signs to look out for to see if someone you know has a drug problem includes;
"dilated pupils, excited, talkative, deluded sense of power, paranoia, depression, loss of control, nervousness, shaking, anxiety, hallucinations, aggression, violence, dizziness, mood changes, blurred vision, mental confusion, agitation."
Does this sound like someone we know?

Pope Benny, you are so right. I was in a cults course in university and some loony-as-rat-sh*t Scientologists visited for a seminar...they would not answer questions that didn't cater to the mass ego of the Church and actually used physical intimidation and their voices to drown me out. Bunch a crazy c*cksuckers. And it looks like Tom Cruise is their most loyal disciple!
Posted by: non vocabulum | May 27, 2005 11:26 AM(#40 of 259)
First of all, I would like to say that Tom Cruise is crazy and I do believe Scientology to be a brainwash factory. (That being said, if the Scientology gestapo is reading this, it was b-side who put the videos up. The black kid just wants everybody to get along.)
Second, don't confuse Scientology with the Church of Christ, Scientist. They are different things, and have different beliefs with regard to how their faith relates to the medical profession.
Third, I do believe that we have overmedicated ourselves and our children. Prescribing drugs for ADD and ADHD is not all the fault of psychiatrists and psychologists, because you don't need to have a degree in that field to prescribe ritalin or any similar drugs.

How popular is scientology outside of Hollywood? I know that Cruise, Travolta, Kirstie Alley, the actress from "King of Queens" and a lot of others in Hollywood are into it, but I don't hear much about it outside of those type of people. Does anyone here know if this group is popular in other parts of the country, too? I've always figured it was a shady group because of the way Tom, John, et al dodge, weave, and get silly to avoid answering questions about their beliefs.

For the past 20 years I have been decrying Tom Cruise as a PHONY! I think he's a boring actor in the caliber of Bonnie Franklin on "One Day At A Time." This guy is a brain washed cult freak. Two of my friends have children who have Aspbergers -- high-functioning autisimm -- and frankly, Prozac and Ritilan have given both of these kids a life. TC is so out of touch with how real people live in this country. I'm glad people are finally seeing him for the phony he is. Tom may have been able to fool all those stupid North Shore Chicago broads in Oprah's audience, but he didn't fool the rest of America for a minute.

L. Ron Hubbard once ordered "get rid of the psychs!" And that has become Tom Cruise's crusade. A secret directive by Hubbard explains the reason behind the irrational assault is that Scientology aught to obtain the financing and appropriations the mental healt field. In the end it is a money thing, folks.
Sadly this idiocy has costed lives because medication was withheld on severly ill scientologists. Read some wonderful quotes by Hubbard on psychiatry and psychology to know just how deep the hate goes of these freaks:

Since he can't get out of the cult, his plan is to act completely insane in hopes that Scientologists disassociate themselves from him.
It's his only way out, and the most important role he's ever taken on. Let's support him with our ridicule and derision.

The media loves to build people up and then tear them down. Tom Cruise is long overdue -- and fortunately for Entertainment Tonight, he did a brilliant job of doing himself in. ET barely had to lift a finger.

MAYBE Mr.Tom Cruise and the rest of the world could come to an understanding:WE stop taking the so called 'drugs' and HE gets "scientology people" to help EVERYONE else for free...wonder if that would suit him???...Because last time I was approached by a member of that 'cult', they were incredibly polite, introducing themselves as the cure to all my problems and as we chatted away I told them I was on anti-depressants. They told me they could 'sense' I was a very special person, that my real talent was being destroyed by drugs, and that they really felt I would only benefit from their help...HOWEVER, when I told them I was unemployed and couldn't really attend the classes they had told me would be'perfect for me', they gave me a phone number and quickly told me to get in touch with them when I had the money...SWEAR TO GOD it's a true story...it happened while I was living in the UK.
So, if they really worry soooo much about "you, me, your kids" and they're so sure their 'path' is the right one why aren't they volunteering, instead of asking for your paycheck, and then some???
Honestly, I've been having a blast watching TC becoming a looney lol fantastic therapy ;)

Maybe Tom Cruise's crusade for Scientology will backfire. I hope so. It seems he has alienated (get it? 'alien'ated, like Scientology's aliens) a lot of people already.
Interestingly enough, at least to me, one of the very first movies he ever had a part in (maybe the first) was "Endless Love," in which Brooke Shields played a lead, so she is someone he would have met in person almost 25 years ago.
I am appalled that he is criticizing her for getting non-Scientologist help with post-partum depression.

Does he actually think he can change the world for the better with Scientology? Where's a good PR person when you need one, obviously Tom thinks he is so big, that he just can speak his mind and act a fool and people would see it as nothing but being cool, caring, and in love. Man he lost his movie star coolnes big time. (But I will definitely go see War of the Worlds :).)

Stop trying to think, Tom - people are watching.

OK, so as a fan of the entertainment world, I am rather disappointed in Mr. Cruise. He has gone from talented actor to narcissistic jerk who automatically assumes that star power is synonymous with unconditional public acceptance of his opinions. As someone who has worked in the mental health field for several years, I have seen, firsthand, symptoms of bipolar disorder. Tom exhibits many of those symptoms in his recent displays of ridiculous behavior on Oprah and the Billy Bush interview. Tom, get help. I beg you. And don't even get me started on his overnight love for Katie Holmes. They met, like, seven minutes ago? Who in the FUCK does this guy think he is? To target Brooke Shields is to alienate any female who has experienced post-partum depression, a very real condition in mothers who were able to sustain the rigors of childbirth. Tom, you're an asshole. The media has given you countless opportunities to spread your crazy, but that doesn't change the fact that you're royally pissing people off. For the love of your precious Scientology, please stop talking, before one of your exes starts to spill your secrets, of which I'm sure there are many.

I have taken classes with the Church of Scientology that changed my life toward a positive direction. I use what I learned there every day of my life. What they teach and believe is far from what is being said here in this forum. Hold your judgments and find out for yourself first-hand just exactly what they are all about.

Here in the UK we don't get Oprah but by the wonders of modern technology I have now seen it for myself. Coupled with the clip above I am now officially SCARED TO DEATH of Tom Cruise.

"To target Brooke Shields is to alienate any female who has experienced post-partum depression, a very real condition in mothers who were able to sustain the rigors of childbirth. Tom, you're an asshole."
Davis, I couldn't agree with you more. Interesting how a "male" who has never even impregnated anyone can "speak" about post partum depression.
There were stories out years and years ago(before the gay rumors hit) where he said "my body is a temple" and that he limits sex. Personally I'd love to get Mimi Rogers (who was much older when they married.) Nicole Kidman (who was much the age of Katie Holmes when they married) and Penelope Cruz in a good gab session.
Or of course we can just wait till his "children' grow up some more and write their tell-all "Daddy Dearest" story.
He's becoming as scary as Michael Jackson

Leave Tom Cruise alone. He can say whatever the f*ck he wants. All your hatered directed towards him doesen';t make you sound saner than him. You don't like scientology. I get it. But how many of you actually know anything about it. I'm not a scientologist myself and not very knowlegebale about it either but at least I don't doubtTom cencerity.

I see his future, and it is... over.
Posted by: Xenu | May 29, 2005 12:27 PM(#89 of 259)
I could comment on his insanity, his idiocy, ignorance and arrogance, or on his disgusting ideas re Post Partum. But I'll hold back. The one thing no one here has yet mentioned is the reputation of Narconon amongst educated medical professionals (vs. uneducated $cientologists)...The data that Narconon claims shows a 78% rehab rate, actually shows a 6% success rate, by their own criteria, moreover, it is extremely dangerous with the highest death rate of any treatment option. They totally ignore what the medical profession has learned from Hippocrates to now, and put patients at high risk of stroke, heart attack and seizure by forcing them to go cold turkey and take insane levels of niacin.
If I write TC and ask him nicely do you think he'll stop loving me -- really, I'm doing just fine without his help...

Hey, I read all the post. Nice to see you understand the danger of scientology.
Tom Cruise, I am a big fan, and saw this coming, now it's hardto watch.
He may be the best proof that scientology is dangerous.
Stop trashing him and try to get him some help! seriously, the leaders of sciento like David Miscavidge (remember his name please, it's his fault) were and always are so hard on him. he can't get through, and this is very sad for him and yes, all his fans.
if you knew the rules of scientology, it says (by hubbard): celebrities must speak loudly and stuff because they are above...
Tom has his brains full of this.
When you want to leave the church, you are "unclear", stalk, harrass, and they own some of yoyr secrets easily.
Does Tom know that and realize? NO. Beleive me;
This is the saddest and unbeleivable famous history of Hollywood that is happening. Tom is N°1 (look at premiere, Forbes, etc)
Give some help to Tom; Try if you want to write to him, it can help; but you have to be well aware of the Whole Stuff that is scientology and its danger.
There is always Hope.

Dear Tom Cruise,
Thank you SO much for caring about me!! I really had no idea that you cared. Could you please mail a cheque, as my university debt is now $30,000? Thanks a ton. Given the fact that you care about me so much, coupled with the fact that you make $20,000,000 per film, the only logical conclusion I can come up with is that you'll be sending the cheque as soon as you can. Thanks again for caring!

There are no special people in this world. We are all creatures of this planet with our own beliefs about the nature of life. A movie star/celebrity is just someone with a job that pays more money than most of us will make in a lifetime. Try to remember that they are not royalty, not gifted with a special knowledge of the nature of the universe, not politicians with special insider info and they are in no way qualified to tell us what is good or bad for them. Tom Cruise might be the guy next door who works at the local gas station if he hadn't tried acting instead. Most successful movie stars simply stumble into success. They all had jobs that you and I held when they were getting started. Celebrity is a cruel joke that seems to decieve all of us into believing some people are special and gifted with profound insight and special knowledge. Isn't that the same thing that the Scientologist wants you to believe about them? We need to think for ourselves more. When I was young our motto was "Question authority" this generation needs to "Question celebrity." Lately there seems to be no end to the number of movie stars willing to tell us how to eat, think, vote, and worship. Don't fall for it. They are just people like the rest of us. We are all trying to make sense of life.
Tom Cruise is just doing his best to live life in a very abnormal environment. He is an average guy in a very strange predicament. He has an abnormal amount of attention paid to everything he does and everything he says. Most celebrities have to deal with that, the point where they go a little mad is when they start to believe they are as special as the world is constantly telling them.
Belief systems are so seductive. Once you adopt a belief and it seems to be working for you it takes great strength to question it's validity. Maybe we all need to ask ourselves if our own ideas about life are out of whack with reality.
Come on, does a lot of money and good looks make anyone a better human?
Maybe that's why guys like Tom Cruise get on our nerves. LOL.

is nicole kidman still a scientologist?
just wondering.

Nicole Kidman is Catholic. She was never into the cult, and didnt want their kids to be either.
Posted by: Katrina | May 30, 2005 10:50 AM(#102 of 259)
You have to remember that people like Tom Cruise, Travolta, Kristie Allen, etc. are not known for their intelligence or perception. They often speak foolishly and without depth.
They are not role models, nor should they be, for our children. Their wealth, though not deserved, is superficial and they are often still seeking the happiness and calm in life that most of us would like. Money has not given this to them and depression is well rooted in the realm of celebrity.
Most of them are not an educated group and, unfortunately, they become heros to those of us who value wealth above everthing else. How unfortunate. They must miss so much of the real life and what life is and should be about.

I did a little research about 4 years on Scientology, and I found this website,http://www.xenu.net/ and read stories about this Cult, and fake religon. (lots of true stories by ex victims) Very scary stuff.
A few months later a friend of mine from L.A called to tell me she closed her business, and became a church secretary for Scientology, she was living with a man who was very involved, she is now a shadow of the lady I used to know, she is strange and sounds like she is programmed.'
She has enrolled her poor daughter is the sea org cult school.
Im glad Tom is finally telling the world about this cult, normal people will recoil from this stuff.
Creepy, Creepy, Creepy!

Cruise fascinates me. He is buying his own crazy hollywood PR BS. Look at his recent behavior. He is utterly manic. A high profile STAR with all kinds of personal issues pontificating and telling the little people how to live. Are there others who watched that clip who were as disgusted as I was, especially by the "I care" bit? How can anyone buy into Scientology after doing a little research into it on the internet? That is the source of Tommy boy's bashing of psychiatrists/psychologists, because Scientology was designed (by a 2nd rate science fiction author) as a pseudo-religion to take the place of psychologists and psychiatrists.

Like all “true believer’s” to non-traditional religions (cults, philosophies, etc), Tom Cruise must adopt the positions of Co$ with total commitment and dedication. There is no room for variations on a theme as there is with traditional religions where sects allow for difference. Hence, Christianity has the variations of Catholicism and Protestantism as well as Mormonism and Christian Science. Scientology cannot, at this stage, tolerate difference.
The comment about “spinning commentary” is accurate as where there is no knowledge and a new outlook, the managers of the personalities would be very hesitant to expose their personalities to criticism. Fortunately, most crazy cults go away because their lack of substance and false claims can’t stand the test of time and they die a natural death. Unfortunately, Co$ has, what most traditional religions have been able to attain over time; money and influence that can offset the criticism and traditional factors by buying influence and marketing.

In hollywood terminology, a beard is when a closeted gay actor sports a woman to butch up his masculinity, or whatever. Presently Katie Holmes is Tom's beard; before Katie it was Penelope Cruz...you do the basic arithmetic.
