Recap: Newport Harbor: Lights, Camera, and finally ACTION

Young love's mystery

Thank goodness for impromptu parties this week on Newport Harbor. Just about everyone seems to have had enough of Clay and Chrissy's little mating dance and would like to see them finally just make something happen. Everyone, that is, except for Allie, who has some plans of her own. I myself, am ready to watch something besides talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. It's time to turn it up a notch and it's going to take a whole lot of work from a whole lot of sidekicks to make sure that things go down according to plan in this welcome fourth episode. Join me, won't you?

We start out this week by watching Chrissy and Sasha having a sprinting racy-poo. This is of course, merely a staged setup for them to segue into - what else? - talking about Clay. Chrissy relates the incident that ended last week's episode, which was her biking past Clay's house to try and make peace and being blown off à la Ben blowing off Felicity. She reiterates that she doesn't care about Chase or kissing him at all and Sasha suggests that Chrissy throw a barbecue and invite certain people, meaning Clay, to try to get things back on the right track. Sasha even offers to serve as the party planner. Sweet! This means we have the hope of an actual event this week, instead of just convo after convo. I'm excited to watch Chrissy's Daddy strip search everyone at the door.

We find Clay and Mayor Grant out on the Pacific Ocean in a boat. Mayor Grant is driving and Clay is wakeboarding off the back. That looks so fun! Of course, when I was 16 I had to wait to be invited boating by someone else's parents; it was never just a matter of scadaddling off to my own boat in the harbor for an afternoon of fun. After the Mayor takes a turn on the wakeboard, the producers remind the boys that they aren't just being filmed for their health and they'd better start talking about something quick.

"Fine, fine. We'll gossip."

Grant asks what is up with Chrissy and Clay thoughtfully relates that he's still "kind of pissed about that whole thing with Chase." And now it's his turn to relate last week's Felicity scene. He kind of reinvents what was said, acting like he told Chrissy what's what about giving Grant information and not expecting it to get back to Clay. Um, Clay? You weren't really a big tough guy like that, you just moped. We saw it.

Next we head over to Allie's kitchen where she and her brother Brent are eating pizza. My theory is that Brent really wanted to make an appearance on little sis's Big TV Show because this scene is so clearly a grand staging for Allie to give orienting information. Brent walks in and hugs her - you know, like every adolescent brother does to his fellow adolescent sister - and immediately asks, "So what's the latest with you? Any new guys?" And thank you Brent! Well done, you get to be in this scene. Just be sure not to start talking about yourself or do anything to take attention away from the drama at hand.

"See? This is how I register 'interest.'"

So Allie gets to explain for everyone that she thinks Clay is really cute, but he's always with Chrissy, but now that Chrissy went and hooked up with Chase, she's going to make a play for Clay. She also talks a lot about her feelings toward Chase, being that they have a history and all - basically way more information than a teenage girl would share with her brother voluntarily - but it sure was handy for us! Brent offers that this could be the "perfect switch" and then the producers tell him that will be all and he won't be needed anymore. Welcome to show business, Brent! Great debut, now get out.

I know this show can be very very VERY conversation heavy, but I will say this:

I'm really liking these kids (at least Chrissy, Clay and even Allie). They seem a little more...innocent than the poseurs of LB3. Chrissy and Clay's awkwardness is very believable and sweet.

Don't get me wrong, I loved LB1 and 2, but Cami and Kyndra and their fake "drama" drove me crazy. Yes, NH can get a little dull at times, but it feels more natural...well, natural for having cameras film your love life.

Speaking of which, HoneyGangsta, I totally agree about how a camera crew could potentially expedite one's love life. I probably would have hooked up with or gotten rejected by my crush by now, were I on "The Real Chicago."

I haven't commented on this site in a long time, but your recaps have forced me to, if you don't like the show, why recap it, give it to someone else, who wants to do it. Last week 2 page recap was atrocious, and your always talking about how staged it is, we get it, but please let us enjoy the show, w/o you pointing that out every line. I like the NPH kids, they seem more natural, and less posy, yes they talk alot, but you make it seem so much worse. I don't mean to rail on you, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Notice how no one posts anymore, that's because your recap take the fun out of a pretty decent show, okay that's it

please stop being so negative about the show, we get that it might be a bit staged, but please stop mentioning it every line, I never post but your recap take the fun out of a pretty decent show.

"I'm not sure how far away Clay thinks the hole is."

HAHAHAHHAA :D
Honeygangsta, that was an EXCELLENT catch. Seriously, it amazes me all the hilarious little details recappers notice.

great recap.
I've stopped watching entire episodes of this show... but I always make sure to read you're recaps. Hilarious. And in your defense, people HAVE been commenting. And, also in your defense, this season seems even more staged than others. Let's just look at the beach cruiser scene a couple of episodes ago. The camera had to be on the back of a truck or something. And who talks while they're on bikes?
And I agree with number 4... you notice the smallest, funniest things. I love the cynicism, too.

Honey Gangsta [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hello!

This is so fun. Thanks for cracking me up, as always, beloved readers!

Are you kidding, nflow? I LOVE this show. Seriously, I think the kids are all really likable and it's such an improvement on LB3.

BUT no, I'm not going to stop being sarcastic or making fun of how contrived it is. That's why TVgasm hired me and it's way too fun. Hope you'll join in!

Much Love,
HG :)

i don't usually comment on anything on the web, but your recaps have prompted me too.. cuz i gotta give u some props - i enjoy reading your recaps.. it's pretty funny and catches some things i didn't and points out some of the stupid/obvious things that just need pointing out..
first, its great that you call her allie's friend fatty. very appropriate. she's pretty stupid and has a lame part/role.
second, i'm glad they moved to a diff o.c. city.. that third season of laguna beach forced me to say that i will never raise my kids there. those girls were the biggest snatches ever.. whether or not it was fake or edited by producers, they were straight up nasty. plus tessa was so obviously not in the cool crowd.. what was the point of her being the narrator?
third, this show is stupid yet i keep watching and similar to everyone else, just wanted to see some action already! it totally reminds me of the days i was in high school (not too long ago mind you).. its those painfully awkward beat around the bush converstaions that makes it oh so painfully awkward and stupid yet oh so captivating.
keep up the good work.

DP Hooker:

I thought the interaction between Clay and Chrissy was genuinely cute. I love Clay...I hate to see how college will turn him from a sweet boy looking for a "long term relationship" to just another playa, as Julie Chen would say.

Is anyone else a little suspicious about all this golfing Chrissy's daddy and mommy are doing? I wonder if golfing is MTV's code for "bound and gagged in the basement so as not to f*ck up any more of our completely spontaneous scenes."

Great recap as usual. I only wish i could be as lucky as Allie to have a teenage brother so interested in my love life. Sigh.

dp hooker:

Also, I thought you would have caught Fatty's comment when she asked Allie what she wore on her date with Clay. Allie said "your top" and Fatty was like "Then I KNOW you looked good." It was just the kind of overbearing, obnoxious confident comment that reminds me why she so deserves the nickname Fatty.

Yankeesfan:

I thought the recap was very good. I also didn't think that HG showed dislike for the show, just a sense of humor on how it is so staged. I love this show. The kids seem so real, as opposed to LB 3...they go on cute dates and don't act like they're 25. They're almost all likeable too.

Dear NFLOW:

I haven't commented on this site in a long time, but your comment has forced me to, if you don't like the recap, why read it, go somewhere else, where they write things you like to read. Your comment was atrocious, we get it, but please let us enjoy the recap, w/o you pointing that you don’t like it. WHO CARES? I love the recap from HG’s point of view, she seem more natural, and less posy, yes her recaps are sometimes 2 pages, but you make it seem so much worse. I don't mean to rail on you, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Notice how no one agrees with you, that's because your comments take the fun out of a pretty awesome recap, okay that's it
