Grab a tissue. Heck, grab a whole box. Tonight's Real World was a four-hanky special. Yes, it was the much anticipated Danny's-Mom-Dies episode, and I must admit, watching it was heartbreaking. I honestly don't know how I'm going to write this recap. I mean, what can I say? Well, I guess the first thing I can do is extend my sincerest condolences to him. All snark and TVgasm joking aside, he did suffer a terrible loss, and watching him bawl on TV made me realize how difficult and emotional this experience was for him. So go call your mom and tell her you love her, and then we'll all hold hands and navigate through this deservedly emotional and thankfully thoughtful episode.
This soon-to-be grim episode began on a surprisingly cheery note. It was, after all, Valentine's Day in Austin, and Danny and Melinda had a big ole date at Oasis ($99 reservation, non-refundable). While Danny scoured the city for a cheap dress shirt, Melinda debated whether or not to buy a card. It's a difficult decision, I know. Luckily, she conferred with The Official Card Council that is Rachel, Johanna, and Lacey, and it was hereby approved that Melinda should purchase a card and heart-shaped box of chocolates for her noble steed.
Speaking of cards, Melinda received one from her ex-promise ring bearer, Jason. Re-gift! Re-gift! Alas, while the missive looked all purdy and nice on the outside, it was filled with attempted passive-aggression and rage on the inside. You see, the entire note was blacked out, and on the side was a NEW message, saying that "Oh, by the way, I had written this BEFORE the breakup and now my feelings have changed." What a putz. We all know that you wrote that card two days ago with the intention to black it all out. Personally, I'm surprised he didn't also write, "I know you are, but what am I? Because I'm rubber and you're glue. Whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you." At this point, one of the girls -- I think it was Lacey -- simply asked, "Why not buy a new card?" (again, because that's assuming he actually had written this Valentine two months ago, which if true, by the way, is the dumbest thing I've ever heard). Personally, my biggest question was more, "Why even send this?" But again, we've learned that Jason is dumb. I really hope he visits so we can make fun of him more. Man, this has been fun.
Meanwhile, Danny Champion of the World was still hunting down a decent shirt. Unfortunately, everything was too expensive. Pssst...just bite the bullet and go to Men's Wearhouse. Or maybe Target. Honestly, it really shouldn't be too hard to find a modestly priced button-down. The Gap or Banana Republic or J. Crew would work just fine in a pinch. Hmmm...can you tell that I'm trying to stall desperately before the show goes Super Somber?
Back at the house, Rachel received the rare non-drippy box from a delivery man. Surely this would be more cotton candy ice cream, right? WRONG! It was just roses. Yup, plain old roses. But maybe they were ice cream roses! That tasted like cotton candy!! I can still dream, right? Lacey, meanwhile, received a phone call from her boy Ryan who claimed he didn't believe in Valentine's Day (which, of course, was why he happened to be calling that very day). The two talked dirty -- I think. The scene was too hushed for me to really be able to discern any words. After Lacey was through with the phone, however, Johanna got on and checked the voicemails, and uh oh, a call from Danny's dad. We cut to commercial as a knot slowly tightened in my stomach.
When we came back, the show was back to happy, goofy mode as the parade of Valentine's Day mania continued. Next up was Leo. Not DiCaprio, although that would have been quite the sight. No, the Leo I'm talking about is Leo the bartender -- the guy that Johanna professed to having a crush on. Well, he showed up at the doorway to surreptitiously deliver flowers to not only Johanna, but all the girls in the house. This of course led to a chorus of "Awwwwww!" from the ladies, and alas, it seemed like the only two people without a Valentine were Wes and Nehemiah. Eh, scratch that. Wes did received a card in the mail. I believe it said, "Dear Wes. What we have is wonderful and special. I love you. Love, Your Right Hand."

I don't remember hearing that his mom was sick and I was under the impression that he and his dad didn't see her that much. What's the story there? What did she die of? SAD!! I like Danny.

talk about a record-breaking speedy recap!
I wouldn't go back to Austin after that, but then again I guess life goes on.

Boo to B-side for putting a spoiler in the first recap paragraph. Us West-Coasters have not seen the episode yet. Tisk, tisk. Looking forward to it nonetheless.

Can someone PLEASE tell me if Danny comes back to the Real World?!?

Danny's mom was a recovering alcholic. Danny's dad say they believed she died of a heartattack. I'm not sure if Danny is coming back or not but I'm leaning towards the yes side.

Man, this is unreal, what is mel ever going to do with herself. The previews for next episode did show e-mail saying danny is not returning but lets hope. Also footage of danny back at home. You'd think the dam people would get the camera out of his face when hes back at home lol. Hope next tuesday comes fast!

on the conversation with danny and his mother they only showed his mom tell him that she loved him but then it seemed danny was angry with her and didn't say it back. i'm sure he said it but thats pretty cruel of mtv not to put it in there.

All I remember about Danny and his mom is that he was always bad mouthing her. Especially when his dad came to visit. I am not saying that his emotions were not real, it was just odd how he could flip-flop so quickly.

Bad form, spoiling your loyal west coast friends.
The world is full of tragedy and this is simply another in a milieu of about a billion. Rick Blaine's "Hill of Beans" speech comes to mind (watch "Casablanca" if you don't get the reference).
I had zero sympathy for Danny's skull fracture, and not a lot for the loss portrayed tonight. He, like so, so many youngins these days, show little respect and regard for their elders, themselves, and others.
He is not the poster boy for consideration of others. I give him back the same.
May God keep Danny's mother's soul in peace and love for all eternity. May Danny (and all) come to know His peace.

Someone posted on a LJ community that Danny DOES NOT come back to Austin. Apparently, he's replaced by some guy from New Jersey who we all are assuming will be gay.
Bunim/Murray is really testing to see how slutty Melinda is. "Maybe she'll do the gay guy too!" Just say yes to watching.

fyi...Danny DOES come back.

Are people from the West Coast utterly unable to skip over an article about a show they haven't yet watched? Two readers commented about "bad form" spoiler stuff...
Granted, the main plot information about the episode was in B-Side's first paragraph and, therefore, unavoidable, but other forums I visit have a once-it's-aired-anywhere-it's-OK-to-write-about-it-and-it's-no-longer-considered-a-spoiler policy.
And does knowing that Danny's mom died an hour or two before we were able to watch the actual episode really affect us so strongly? Perhaps there are other priorities to be considered in life.

Hey Carol (#10)
Danny doesn't flip flop with his emotions. That is still his mother. No matter how twist someone's family life can be, most people still have an unconditional love for their parents....
14 of 52 | Posted by mellymel | Posted on August 3, 2005 3:46 AM
Man that was tough to watch. I really feel for the guy. That being said Wes should shut his pie hole with his "Yeah, I kinda know how he feels". No you dont paste face, so shut up.
ALthough im not so sure what a great idea it is to have the cameras follow him back to boston (from the previews of next week) for the funeral. THats kinda something you dont want to exploit.
It was so traumatic Melinda may have to stop whoring for a full 48 hours (had to get some snark in there).

I'm pretty sure Danny doesn't tell his mom he loves her when they replay that 4-days-prior phone call. She keeps saying it and he's all quiet and like, "okay, bye." That was the worst part of the show for me. That, and watching a frat guy bawl unabashedly in the arms of another dude, instead of being the angry, sulky mourner. His grief (and guilt) was totally genuine. That, my friends, earned some hankies.
THAT is why I tell my parents I love them pretty regularly, even though we're not close. I would feel like shit if they died and I'd been all "whatever, bye" on them just days before.
P.S. I still hate Danny's short-brimmed hats.

That was some pretty harsh judgement of Danny further up the page. Even if he and his mother didn't get along very well, losing a parent is almost always an excruciating experience. It's even harder when feelings of regret are mixed in. I haven't had a chance to see this episode, but am really looking forward to it.

I felt so bad for Danny. His mother was an alcoholic and I am sure he had so many bad feelings about her. It does not mean he did not love her and also probalby dreamt about her getting better and having a relationship. That dream has now been shattered. I pray he came back and that he got grief counsleing. I am sure he didnt say I lvoe you back as to me it sounded as if his mother was drunk on the phone so was probalb yupset with her.

This episode of real world took me back to the days of old real world. Where you'd watch it and really watch someone going through something you hadn't, and see people dealing with things and relating it to your own life. My heart just broke - I felt terrible. I was really touched by the fact that Nehimiah and Mel were doing everything they could to be there for him, though they understood that they couldn't take the place of his family. (I hope those cameras have really good zoom on it and they weren't as totally up in his face as it appeared they were- can you imagine hearing news like hat with a camera guy crouching one foot away?).
19 of 52 | Posted by Leah3t | Posted on August 3, 2005 7:14 AM
1. I think you missed the second-most disturbing phone call of the episode -- Lacey speaking babytalk with her boyfriend. Yecch.
2. Why didn't Danny just put the phone down for a second, turn to the camera, and say, "Get the f--ck out of here!"? Is the camera operator going to Hell for zooming in on Danny's face as he learns his mother is dead?
3. Do Wes and Nehemiah *really* never get laid? Or do the editors just edit that out? I remember on the San Diego reunion show, they said that Nehemiah -- I mean, Jacquese -- got lots of action, just all off camera.
20 of 52 | Posted by Tom | Posted on August 3, 2005 8:41 AM
danny signed up for having cameras in his face 24/7 no matter what happens. death is a part of life and this particular situation was going to be extremely crucial to this season. what if danny leaves and never comes back and they never explained that dannys mom died and thats why he left? it would be too strange..plus ratings people.

Kudos to TVGasm for being so cool about Danny's dilemna. I have to say that was one of the saddest moments I have ever seen on reality television. And that for one time in many, many years, I felt like THE REAL WORLD was actually showing the real world.
And about the *ssholes who are mad that someone printed spoilers in a show that hadn't aired in their time zone...NEWS FLASH: Don't read the f*cking article, C*nt-Face!
22 of 52 | Posted by Aunt Sassy | Posted on August 3, 2005 8:53 AM
Actually, Danny didn't tell his mother he loved her in that last phone call. Which he can now replay a million times over because MTV is kind that way.
23 of 52 | Posted by Tootie | Posted on August 3, 2005 9:12 AM
Poor Danny. It almost felt like I was watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, it had me crying so hard. It broke my heart to see the replay of the last phone call and have him not say he loved his mom. Even now, it makes me a little verklempt.

That was really sweet of Nehemiah and Melinda trying to comfort Daniel. My sick friend said they were just trying to get felt up because neither ahd had any action.

West Coasters get over yourselves. Last time I checked, a RECAP is a summary of what happened. If you want to be surprised by what happens, don't read the RECAP before the episode airs. Boo to YOU for getting mad at B-Side for doing his job. You spoiled it for yourselves.

I couldn't believe last night's episode. I was so shocked when Danny's dad told him that his mother had died.
And shame on everyone who has attacked Danny on flip-flopping on how he feels about his mother or not feeling any sympathy for him. My father and I weren't close when he died suddenly of a heart attack when I was 19, but it didn't mean I wasn't heart broken. Danny will be shaped by this death and how he and people around him handle it. Good on Mtv for finally showing something that people can really care about.
***Ed (#10), you are a jerk. And no one who refers to kids as "youngins" should even be watching the Real World, get a life.
30 of 52 | Posted by poor danny | Posted on August 3, 2005 2:50 PM
danny comes back...watch the mtv trailer...he tells melinda "i came back for you because i love you and i miss you and i want to be with you"
woo hoo!
i hope they get married they are so cute together
31 of 52 | Posted by elizabeth | Posted on August 3, 2005 3:07 PM
You're correct poordanny, I should, instead, use "the kids" as the has-been David Letterman does.
You are a fool if you pre-judge a given person's reaction to any stimuli. Danny displayed plenty of narcissistic behavior and attitude prior to the death. It is incredibly rare for anyone to significantly modify such in a few weeks.
My money says he will still be a jerk. If he would not stop getting wasted after having his skull smashed in (in fact the first available opportunity he got trashed and poisoned himself), he ain't changin' because his distant mom passed.
32 of 52 | Posted by Ed | Posted on August 3, 2005 3:25 PM
Poor Danny - the boy will be riddled with guilt for the rest of his life for not telling his lush of a mother that he loves her too, even though she stole money from his piggy bank when he was younger to buy her hooch.
btw - When Melinda hits about age 30 those tits are gonna be hanging to her knees. She's a sagger.
33 of 52 | Posted by pfp | Posted on August 3, 2005 4:44 PM
Ed, YOU are the fool for judging Danny based on waht you've seen on TV. catching a glimpse into his life for a30 minutes a week doesn't give you the right to judge him, or anyone else for that matter.
34 of 52 | Posted by Amos | Posted on August 3, 2005 5:11 PM
Echoing others, this ep was the most real one of the season (and prob the most real of the last few seasons).
As for taping him at home at the funeral... A documentary 'documents' their lives. They would be unfaithful to the medium and the entire idea of the series if they only taped when the roommates felt like being on camera. I commend mtv for showing it all in a respectful, yet complete manner.
Did you notice the queer colorful (Texan?) blue screen backgrounds gone off of the confessionals? Appropriately done.
35 of 52 | Posted by mockmodesty | Posted on August 3, 2005 5:36 PM
You all have really hit all the annoying parts about last night. Wes comparing his emotions about a friend to Danny's, Lacey's weird babytalking to her boyfriend, and the replay of Danny's phone conversation with his mom (as if Danny didn't have enough regrets...that final conversation and his indifference lives forever on tape). I'm just surprised that Melinda didn't offer to hop in the sack with Danny to make him feel better. I bet she was thinking about it.

i admit that i am someone who has ridiculed the real world austin cast in the past, and admit to prejudging all of the castmates based on how they were typecast (the "pretty boy", the "slut", the "army girl", the "frat boy", the "pariah", the "fiesty latina", and the "enlightened black guy"). However, this episode really made me feel for danny and i actually cried for him.
*fyi, just because someone has poor relations with a family member--especially a parent-- doesn't mean that he/she can't feel horrible after said person dies. really, people. have SOME compassion for the guy
37 of 52 | Posted by somebody | Posted on August 3, 2005 7:31 PM
Very sad -- poor Danny.
As for the "serious" instead of "seriously" -- I feel they would overdo it if they learned to add the "-ly." Or do it in the wrong way. You know -- "This relationship is going goodly."
38 of 52 | Posted by redhaiku | Posted on August 4, 2005 8:20 AM
i think what i felt for the most was that danny kept saying "i should have been there." really- he probably didn't see his mom too often when he was living back home. he wouldn't have actually been there with his mom when she passed. i feel so bad for him that he carries that guilt.

Mel's ex Jason: @sshole.
Wes: Doesn't know how Danny feels, but I guess he'll learn that someday...
Nehemiah: Kudos for being there. No he's not perfect, but I still love this guy.
Danny: What can I say? There's nothing to be said to things like this. It sucks. I feel for him. I'd hug him if I were there.
Melinda: Same as Nehemiah. I haven't looked down on her like most in the first place, but that's beside the point. Anyway, I think she genuinely loves Danny. Or perhaps, she's learning how to love? Also possible...
By the way, where did the reliable info come from that she banged a guy 20 minutes after Danny left the airport? Sorry, I'll have to know a little more about someone's sources before I just swallow garbage like that whole... (If she actually did, I think that would speak to a great sadness; and she she should be in some kind of rehabilitation program. But I don't think it's true anyway.)

I didn't see the episode yet but I can definitely feel for anyone who loses a family member, especially a parent.
Melinda pisses me off....especially because it seems like she adds unneccessary words in sentences to appear as if she is saying more. She thinks it makes her sound more intelligent but it really just makes her sound more and more like an idiot.

I am appalled by the comment made by Ed on this board....We are all human, and especially young adults tend to think the world is their oyster and that death will never happen. They don't think about how mortal they are or how short life is....so when the death of a parent hits a kid in his young adult stage....that's pretty harsh. It's hard enough to take the loss of a parent when one is in their 40s or 50s, let alone 20s. And losing a mother, no matter how bad the relationship may have been, is the worst because there is always a mother-child bond (they shared the same body for 9 months). Rather than lecturing the kid, chill out.

Rumor has it Melinda gets pregnant by Danny. After the show wrapped, they did a radio remote (here in Austin) including Melinda and Danny. When they all went to the station the next day, Danny and Melinda didn't go.
And yes, contrary to MTV's beliefs, there actually is more to Austin that just bars... I promise!

OMG! Would you people get spell check? It is MTV's Real World! They have covered the topic of drugs, rape, alcoholism and promiscuous sex. What do you think is next to get ratings? YES that is right , Death! You have another cookie cutter cast, trying to act outside of their comfort zones to get ratings.. What do you expect?

New to the boards, but:
If this past episode (I am seeing it on tape delay from Tuesday) did not get those tear ducts flowing, there is a clown from your 5th birthday that pissed on your cake, and you missed it. Not the death episode but the burial episode. As a heterosexual male, I have never cried so much. I felt like Dick Vermeil cutting onions. Best reality moments ever. And yes, I did call my mother. (Silent sobs!!)
