Last night the Top 20 danced for our votes and tonight the results are in. Sucks to go through that entire audition process and have to go home the first night, but one boy and one girl gotta go. A solitary tear is dripping down my cheek right now. THIS is SoYouThinkYouCanDance!
We start the show with another of my favorite aspects of this show: the group numbers. Tonight's was choreographed by Wade Robson and it looks like he was going for zombie go-go-dancers meets zombie-Fosse. It's Rich Man's Fugue from Sweet Charity. This number is choreographed really well for TV, and we get lots of camera movement, which makes the whole performance much more dynamic than if we were viewing a wide shot of the whole stage.
Spirit Fingers Court
Omg, I want Cat's dress so badly. Also: a body that would look that good in that dress. Curses!
Same judges as last night: Nigel, Mary and Dan. Cat gets right down to business and calls out our first round of couples. Jamie and Hok are up first. Last night the judges loved Hok and thought Jamie did well, considering hip hop is not her style. They are safe. Anya and Danny did the Jive last night and the judges looooved it. Me too! Btw, Love the sweater, Danny!
Not even that body can make this sweater work.
Anya and Danny are safe, they leave the stage. Last in this group are Sabra and Dominic. They did the disco last night and it did not go over well with the judges. It's no surprise that they must dance for their lives.
Cat has the second group ready on the stage as we return from commercial. Up first are Lacey and Kameron. In case you forgot, they danced a Mia Michael's contemporary routine last night and were stupendous. AMERICA agreed and they are safe. Ashley and Ricky did not do so well last night in their Argentine Tango. Ashley towered over Ricky and they lacked chemistry. They are in the bottom three, and Nigel acknowledges that it was the show that paired them, and the height difference should have been taken into account in the choreography.
Sara and Jesus did a Wade Robson pop-jazz routine last night and Mary called it spectacular. Did AMERICA agree? Yes, of course. Finally in this group are Pasha and Jessi, who did a slow waltz last night. I freaking love that Pasha wore a tie to rehearsal. The judges loved them and so did AMERICA. They are safe. I give up.
Results time for the last group. Lauren and Neil are first. The night before they did a club salsa routine that received tepid response from the judges. Neil was ragged on by the judges for being gay (basically) and not into Lauren enough. AMERICA disagreed with the judges and Lauren and Neil are safe. Now it is down to Faina and Cedric and Shauna and Jimmy. Faina and Cedric danced a hip-hop routine, and Faina could not match Cedric's technique or style. Shauna and Jimmy danced a Broadway routine that went over slightly better with the judges, though Nigel though Shauna looked fat in her dress, which, relevant. So who's in the bottom? Faina and Cedric.
I gain a little respect for Faina when she looks excited to be dancing again that night. Mary thinks America got it wrong on this one, but I am completely unsurprised that they are here, because they just weren't that good last night.
Before the commercials, Cat introduces someone who managed to avoid the bottom for all of last season: Benji Schwimmer. The audience goes bat-shit crazy! Cat and Benji small-talk a little before she asks him if he'd dance for us again. Right, like he just came out in red satin gloves for the hell of it. CLEARLY he's going to dance. Also, what's with the sideburns, Benji? Uggo!
It's typical Benji, kicking and sliding all over the stage to that "Americano" song from The Talented Mr. Ripley. He hams it up to the max, but that's why we love him. Um, something we don't love: Benji pulling his pants down at the end of his routine to show his American flag underwear... WTF??

I think that Nigel's commments were kind of bullshit to Dominic, because altho he may give the same tricks every time, Travis, Benji, Heidi, Natalie, Allison and Dmitri gave us the same fucking solo every time they had to dance solo. Why are the standards different for a street dancer? Also I agree with the judge's decision b/c dancing isn't just about doing the steps, you do have to have personality to get the audience to love you. It's how Benji won, not because he was the best technical dancer. And Ricky's personality is creepy. He would have been in the bottom 3 every time. I can't wait for tonight!

krank-
i think you are my long lost twin soul! b/c center stage is SO my standard for what ballet should be too! and what better song to rock a little dance move to.
i am not at all surprised that ricky went, even though i thought he was awesome. i knew cedric was staying. and i felt like the "jidges" love dominic. so it had to be ricky, mia's favorite.

What I LOVED about that group dance is 1) they did it all with a single camera, and that's some freaking hard stuff to do on that stage and 2) they somehow made all the girls look like they all had the same body. Awesome awesome stuff.
Personally, I think they got rid of Ricky instead of Dominic because they didn't think that Ricky could be paired with Sabra. At least not very well. And Ashley totally dialed in her solo. It was so obvious she wanted to go home with that routine.

I think they totally got it wrong with letting Ricky go. He may have an off-putting personality, but he was amazing with his solo.
Dominic on the other hand was just an average breaker, not really giving us anything new with his solo routine that we haven't seen a million times already.
Whatever though, I couldn't see Ricky winning anyway, but it would've been nice to see him perform a Mia routine. Bet it would've been mind-blowingly amazing.

Ricky was my favorite--i guess i just like the creepy. i agree that his solo wasn't his best, but it was still much better than the other 2. Cedric is amazing in his own style, which is what he did last week, and he has a lot of heart, but i still think Ricky was better.
Faina is my favorite now, so she's probably next. i kind of like everyone else the same--although Lacey kind of won me over with the amazing Mia routine and the professional krumper line.
oh, and i loved that opening number. Wade Robson is amazing.

The ONLY thing I could think when Benji dropped trou was - "OMG, KM is going to have a field day with this one." Seriously, what WAS that?!
I had the bottom three couples nailed, so none of them were a shocker to me. While Sabra & Dominic weren't bad, and neither were Cedric and Faina, for me it came down to who was actually better.
Ricky is a BRILLIANT dancer. I actually think Dominic should have gone home. He's also got talent, I just think he's going to be extremely limited in what he does (spinning on his hands & head).
Now, what do I have to do to get Baby Oil kicked off?

I think since Ricky bungled a new dance style so badly and the producers KNOW he's capable of killing in his style, the opportunity for "growth" and a surprising turn in a new style was lost for them. Dominic shocked all three of them with how well he performed the disco routine (boringness aside), and I'm betting they want to give Cedric at least one more chance in a different style since he partnered better than they expected as well.
Plus, you know, Ricky was really superweird in an unappealing way. My friend was glad to see him go because she hated looking at him.

LOl... I forgot to mention that in HS I knwe a guy that acted and looked (minus the muscles) exactly like Ricky. I mean hair styles, teeth and everything. He had a very offputting personality as well and was just very weird... so of course we ended up being friends :P lol

And Anya looks very much like Natasha, the Russian bride from the latest America's Next Top Model.

I can't stand Mary's mouth- ack! And her grating cackle work smy nerves. I'd rather see more Mia Michaels (who, incidentally, choreographed Cirque du Soleil's "Delirium" show- pretty impressive credentials).
Ricky gave me the skeeves, too, but I still think Cedric show have gone home. He's "amazing" (seems to be the 'it' word of this show from both judgees and performers) at what he does, but lacks indredibly when asked to venture into other forms of dance. Tiffany should not have been asked to leave- that awful Shauna should have gone. Oh well.
