Recap: So You Think You Can Dance: Practice at Home

***Note from the Editor: The lovely Krank Mills is on vacation this week, and our newest recapper has graciously agreed to fill in! SUCKA!! Thanks, Pachita! xoxox

Hey All! I am super-psyched to be filling in on one of my favorite favorite shows. I frequent Krank Mills' recaps and know I've got some big [tap] shoes to fill, but I promise to try my very best. See what I did there? Tap Shoes? Cause we're talking about a dance show?! Nothing? Oh fuck it, on with the show.

After our top six are introduced (as if we don't already know their names), Cat sashays her way to the stage and tells us that we'll be seeing each pair dance twice and then we'll get six solos before the lines open. Tonight's the night to pick your finalists, America! This is So You Think You Can Dance!

Limprwrist

Our first pair of the night is Lacey and Pasha doing a hip-hop routine by Dave Scott. During practice, we find out the theme of this bad boy is Xanadu-esque with Lacey starting out as a mannequin. Lacey growls at the camera for some strange reason and I throw my phone at the TV. She's been getting increasingly annoying, no? I suppose I should ignore it. That's the third phone I've broken this month.

The dance starts and Lacey is mannequin-ing her ass off on a chair while Pasha fancy footworks all over the place. Lets gets real, people, Pasha is so freaking cute, I don't know what to do with myself. The dance starts out a little strange and I'm wondering when Lacey's going to come alive. Correct me if I'm missing something, but at this point in the game, shouldn't we be focusing on the dancing? Don't get me wrong, she's pretty damn good at standing still; I would just like to see a little more dancing.

So You Think You Can Stand Still, Stand Still, Stand Still....

The number eventually starts to pick up and they both rock the pachita out of the stage. I am just starting to love it when it ends abruptly and never takes off the way I was expecting. Oh well, it's a good thing I was waiting for the first commercial break to change into my dance clothes because that was a bit of a bore. Did I mention I feng shui my living room furniture and do all the dances myself as I watch? I think it really makes the show come alive.

On to the jidges! A brief aside: have we fully explored why the crap Cat pronounced the word 'judges' this way? Because I'm pretty sure it's fake. Every time she says it, it sounds more and more fake Aussie. But, I digress. Nigel loved Pasha's 'dorky hip-hop' character and Lacey's movement as the mannequin. Mary thinks Pasha was crazy-good tonight and that the wind is still blowing in the right direction for the both of them. Debbie Allen is our guest judge again tonight and thinks it was a great opening number, they had great energy, totally nailed it, great energy (again?), just great. It was all around great. A whole lotta greatness happening here. OKAY, Debbie, WE GET IT, IT WAS GREAT. Can we move on please?

Debbiewhatyouthink
So, Debbie. What'd you think?

Sabre is our first solo dance of the night and while she is a great dancer and all, the solos are just really boring at this point. The dancers each go back to the style they are most comfortable with, making all their solos look the same. Long story short, I'm not a big fan a solos. And I'm really not a big fan of Sabre's chosen solo outfit. It's bad enough she's wearing a purple maliform bathing suit, couldn't we have done without the sequined pageant banner?

Oh, Pachita! You are an awesome fill-in. I was laughing very hard (out loud!), and I don't usually do that while reading recaps. Thank you so much. Great job~

Methinks Cat reads this blog. It seems she keeps saying 'jidges' more and more, and she really didn't do that last year, or at the beginning of this year. I was kind of smirking when she said it this Wednesday, thinking about tvgasm...

Bullet train - Danny and Lauren were super fast, and the jidges said this a few times. I believe that was why Mary called it a Bullet Hot Tamale train. And when Niel raised his hand and said this was his first time on the train, I giggled. Ah, I do think he's very cute. Maybe he shouldn't win, but I'll keep voting for him anyway. I loved both of his dances.

I was talking to someone about how, as awesome as Pasha is, I cannot stand the gap between his two front teeth. What do other people think of this? Maybe I'm just obsessive about things like that, but I think if he got the money to fix them, and did, he'd be 10 times better.

Also: Did anyone else feel sad and depressed when SYTYCD didn't come on Thursday? I hadn't seen any news of it being on Monday, so I panicked and wondered when it was going to play. Went and checked the website right away, and felt much relief.

Your notes on Debbie Allen were hysterical. XD

Pachita, this was a great recap. My personal faves: "Choo, choo, sailor!" and the comment about vertigo. I loved Sabra and Neil's "Sweet Dreams" routine, but it really was very much a copied format of the video itself, with the pounding of the fists on the table and all. Power lunch, indeed.

I cannot stand Lauren, and I hope she goes home. I don't think she's anywhere near as good as Sabra or Lacey. As for Lacey, she pans to the camera too much for my liking, and her solos ALL LOOK THE BLOODY SAME. The "me no likey solos" comment had me nodding along heartily, for I can't stand how these people pretty much do the same thing everytime, prompting me to wonder why they even have solos in the first place. My predicitions? I think Lauren and possibly Neil will go home. Tough call on the guys. All I know is there is NO WAY Pasha is going anywhere. Grrrrrowl!

Thanks for a lovely fill in, and stay away from that lamp! We don't want you impaired for Monday's results show.

Trey, I was sad and suprised on thursday night to! Why didn't they tell everyone on thursday? Jeez, I'm going to forget what the dances looked like between now and then.

I really hate how some weeks the judges are judging all over the place, and others they just rubber stamp and love everything. I totally thought they were going to call lacey out on NOT DANCING for 60% of that first routine. And Lauren! is still awful. Her fake giddiness is really annoying.

I think it'll be Lauren! in the bottom and its a tough call on the guys. I'm thinking it may be danny since pasha and neil have such big fan bases.

Rock Star [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Guys, Cat said the results would be on Monday...

You had me lmao at the "So You Think You Can Stand Still" screencap. Seriously. I don't care who wins, but if Lauren makes it to the final 4, I may vomit.

bellewhore [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I was just as confused about the muumuu... do you think you can get preggers at 50? I'm really hoping the top four'll be Danny, Sabra, Lacey and Pasha. Good job with the recap btw.

marysch [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hey, Rock Star....who actually listens to what Cat has to say, anyway?!?! : )

I must say, I really enjoyed Lacey and Pasha's hip hop routine. A) it had Pasha and B) Lacey had to hold her face really still and not mug to the camera. Yeah!

Thanks for the excellent fill-in re-cap, Pachita

Trey [TypeKey Profile Page]:

thanks, marysch. I was going to say... Well, I can't remember what Cat says half the time. I think she's pretty, but I really didn't hear her say 'Monday,' If it was at the beginning of the show, no way I'd remember her saying it at all. XD But, really, I have no recollection of it.

Oh, now after reading all these replies, I remembered something else I was going to talk about, but forgot: Lacey. It's nice to see some people who aren't fans of her. I think she's an attention whore, and honestly, if she were not Benji's sister, I don't think she'd have fans.

Maybe that's just vicious of me. But I really can't stand to watch her that long. A lot of her dances with couples are good, but her solos really are all the same. A friend said that she was better than everyone on this season, and better than Heidi and Donyelle from last season. I was like WTFNO.

Ah, well. Sorry to Lacey fans (but I put up with the Neil bashing, so gtfo =3= ... i'm kidding really. ;; ).

Amythyst [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Pachita, good job. I enjoyed that. I was late getting home Wed night and missed Lacey and Pasha's hip hop routine. (caught it on YouTube later tho)as well as Sabra's first solo. I'm not a fan of the solo routines either.

I'm over Lacey. I think ever since I heard Neil comment on how stinky her weave was I just shudder now when I see her. her dancing - yeah it has made me go "wow" a few times this season. When it comes to hip-shaking and shimmying -the girl has that down pat.
Didn't used to care for Neil. He has certainly grown on me the past few weeks tho. Especially when he's bare chested. I like him a lot.
And I'm in the minority when it comes to Lauren. I like the girl! Better than Lacey for sure.
Never been a Danny fan.
Not a huge Pasha fan either. Both these men can dance, just don't do it for me.
Now Sabra - that girl kicks ass! I loved both of the routines she and Neil did. I don't know one dance technique from the other, I just know what I like.

I did hear Cat say the results show would be on Monday. I was bummed bummed bummed. I needed that usual Thursday night fix.

Sabra should win.

TinkerbellAPixie [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Great recap Pachita - you're a very very funny writer. I'm going to enjoy reading more of your stuff.

I am glad you got a screen shot of Debbie Allen's necklace. I was really worried she was going to stab herself with that thing. Can you imagine the headlines "Debbie Allen died on Tuesday from a tragic but fatal necklace injury"

I'm still swoony for Neil so I want him to stay. I realize Danny is a better dancer - but Neil is a better entertainer.

And I agree with the comment about Lacey's stinky weave - it made me like her a whole lot less.

jedaqueen [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I had to stop crying before I could write this, that was very funny, Pachita! Good work, and so dead on. I love the idea of dancing to the show in your own living room with your dogs. I can't wait to see the next show and read your next recap! Thanks...

Dagiana [TypeKey Profile Page]:

"Sure, I may be making it a tad more difficult by using an armchair as a partner, but hey, my dog just isn't very limber."

Laughing my ass off!!! And your caption for the screen shot below that was even more hilarious!

I definitely think that Cat must read this, or at least have heard about it, because at first, she started having the audience say "judges" (as if she were self-conscious about it [which is sad—accents are cool!]), and then when she returned to saying it, she seemed to be making a concerted effort to pronounce it like an American. I have to say, though, that I don't understand your reference to Cat being a fake Aussie, when her accent is so clearly Northern English.

Pasha is my favorite guy, because he's so cute and I'm partial to ballroom dancers. (Anyone notice how much he looked like Ellen DeGeneres' DJ, Jonny, in that hip hop routine? http://ellen.warnerbros.com/showinfo/bio-dj.html [If he only had the glasses ON in this photo...])

Danny is the best all-around dancer by far, and I really like him now that he's warmed up and is no longer coming across as incredibly arrogant.

Neil won me over with that Wade Robson routine a few weeks ago where he was a villain in red. Loved it!!! (But just about anyone could win me over with a Wade routine and Roisin Murphy song.)

And I still can't stand Lacey, but I've always been afraid she'll win anyway, simply because all the people who voted for Benji will probably vote for her, which is so annoying! (And I, for one, was not a Benji fan. Dmitry all the way!!!) Lacey's not nearly as well-rounded as Sabra or Lauren or a lot of the girls who were on the show! So Trey, I completely agree with everything you've said about her. I am especially irked by the way she responds to the judges' compliments: That look on her face when she raises her eyebrows and mouths "thank you" is almost condescending.
