Recap: So You Think You Can Dance Performance Show: All About Song Choice

maryscreaming.jpgLast week we got rid of Ashley and Ricky. And by "we" I mean the judges, since they actually made that decision, and don't let them convince you otherwise in this episode. Now that the gravity of "dancing for your life" has struck the dancers, everyone's giving their all this week. It's a solid performance show, with most of the pairs doing really well. But there's still plenty of questionable fashion choices and classic Mary Murphy-isms to be had. Welcome to SoYouThinkYouCanDance!

Cat reintroduces us to our Top 18. They will be household names, dammit, if it's the last thing Nigel does!

Some thoughts from the solos: Jessi is still useless to me. Kameron is adorable. When did Pasha get so hot? Danny is incredible.

Cat Deeley is wearing a vagina dress. No really, there are vaginas on it. I like her hair tonight, though.

Ooh tonight's guest judge is Mia Michaels! Yes, bring on the bitchery. Cat gets right into it, asking how Mia feels about her two favorites, Ricky and Ashley, being eliminated first. Way to stir the pot, Cat.

Mia was gagging you guys. She gagged. Okay we get the picture drama queen, move on. Mia blames it on America, saying "America got it wrong."

WHYYY? We trusted your vote!

Mia says the best male dancers were in the bottom last week (BOLD FACE LIE) so the judges had no choice. Nigel explains that the judges decided to keep the dancers with more personality, simple as that. He decries "dance snobs" (um, shout out?) who require formal training. That's all well and good, but how much you want to bet later in the season they start going with the people with more formal training?

Cat explains the theme of all of tonight's getting-to-know-our-dancers-videos: What inspired you to dance? As Mia Michaels once said, "Gag"

Lauren was a tomboy so her mother made her take dance classes to be a little bit girly. When Lauren took the stage, her face lit up and her mother could see how much she loved it and knew that's what Lauren would do with her life. Neil had a crush on a girl in preschool who took dance classes so he and his twin started taking them. Yeah, um, Neil's straight. Who knew? Certainly not the judges last week who commented on the lack of chemistry between Lauren and Neil, and laid most of the blame with Neil.

This week the pair are dancing hip-hop. The choreographer, Dave Scott, is worried about Neil in rehearsals. Because he's so white. But Dave is excited to incorporate some of Neil's acrobatics into the routine. Lauren's sooo sure she's doing everything right, and even corrects Neil in a few places. That would get so old so fast if I were in this competition, but Neil doesn't seem to mind.

They're dancing to "The Way I Are," which is a kind of cool techno song, but what kind of title is that really? My inner grammar-teacher cringes. Lauren, aside from wearing about the most horrible costume ever, is so meh during this performance. I can't take my eyes off of Neil though. At one point, he does this incredible leap over Lauren and almost seems to stop in midair. So cool.

Straight Men Can't Jump

Cat comments that Neil is bringing "the 'tude." Haha, so funny when British people say American colloquialisms. Mia loved the routine and loved Neil, going as far as to say she could have done without Lauren. Yeah, my first impression was that she made a lot of funny faces. That's about all I remember Lauren doing. Mary comments that their chemistry has vastly improved since the week before. Nigel loved the routine from the both and comments that they've set the bar high for everyone else dancing out of their style that night, which is just about everyone so this should be interesting.

Seriously, why does Pasha look so cute this week? Haircut? Spray tan? What is it? Geez, first Neil, now Pasha... Kameron better watch his back, because he's got some serious competition for my love. Pasha started dancing at 8 years-old after watching the beautiful women in ballroom competitions. Touching story, there, Pasha. Jessi started dancing at 2 in front of her fireplace. She calls it a "celebratory artform." Shut up, Jessi.

I think I realized that Pasha was cute when he wore his tie to rehearsal last week! How cute is that! And also, he seems like such a gentlman!

As much as I like Anya and Danny and they are lovely together, I'm not sure they like each other very much.

Another fine recap!

I do have to respectfully disagree with you on one couple - Sabra and Dominic. I got chills watching them. I thought the routine was simply gorgeous.

And Sara and Jesus rocked. Their music sucked, but the routine itself rocked.

Can we PLEASE get rid of Baby Oil?

I have always thought Pasha was really hot. Even with the tooth gap. I'm still bummed they but him with baby oil girl, everything she does drives me insane. Lauren is starting to annoy me as well, she just looks so 'dance team' to me. And who dressed her this week? Yikes.

Sara and Jesus were almost screwed by that horrible music. Worst Paso music/remix of Queen ever. But they pulled off the dance itself pretty well.

georgiababe [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Well, first off, not EVERY single male dancer is gay. In fact, the only ones on this show who have struck me that way are Jimmy and Jesus and Ricky (sort of). The rest seem pretty straight to me. They just happen to love dance.

I love Dominic now. Last week, I was so mad that Ricky got the boot over him, but this week, he proved me wrong and was awesome. But I can't believe you didn't comment on his line about Sabra falling on his weiner. That was so funny!

I liked Sabra and Dominic this week, Sara and Jesus not so much, Anya and Danny are awesome, Jessi still sucks, Neil and Lauren rock my socks, Pasha is super hot, Kameron and Lacey are great and Cedric pisses me off because look how terrible he was this week. Just awful. He should have left over Ricky. Although Ricky is totally creepy - check out his bio on Fox.com. It's weird...

All in all, great recap!

when Kameron was talking about how he started dancing am i the only one who thought he was going to break into "i can do that" from a chorus line?

One thing i always liked about sytycd is that the music usually went so well with the dance and they werent afraid to use more classical music for some of the ballroom stuff. guess thats over. it totally ruined the paso!

Shollia [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I actually liked Sara and Jesus's performance to We Will Rock you.
It would've been better if it wasn't that remixed mess, but it was different and caught your attention.
Other than the music though.. I thought Jesus did a great job.

Shaz [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rainbodragon, you kill me! "I Can Do That"....ha, ha. That I can do!!

It's too bad that these dancers are captive to the choreographers routine and song choice, because I thought Sara and Jesus did rather well, considering their respective training. If they'd chosen a different song with more Spanish flare, we might have looked at it differently.

Mmmm...Pasha. What a cutie! Kameron with a "K" may be SYTYCD's resident hottie, but Pasha has a good guy niceness about him that is totally appealing. And Neil doesn't suck eggs, either. But his partner does. Yikes! Exercise your right to just say "no" to crappy outfits and high school pom-pom routines, Lauren. Ugh.

I still detest Mary Murphy and her flounder mouth. And her signature cackle/scream makes me want to throw something at the telly.

kristin_d_l [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I am with you, Krank Mills. I heart Pasha with the fire of a thousand suns (not really, but I like him a whole lot), and the jazz with him and Jessi was my favorite of the night. I also thought Danny and Anya were spectacular.

Dom and Sabra, despite the ridiculous length of the judges' tongue bath of them and seemingly every other person on the internet being in love with the pair of them, were "just okay" to me, to quote Dan Karaty. I didn't get much out of the routine, hated the choreography and can take or leave the both of them (although I like them more than both Cedric and Jamie. Yikes.)

Rock Star [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Who the hell is Jamie?
Seriously, is that a dancer on the show?

Rock Star [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Several hours later, I figured out. That probably means she needs to go home.

addicted076 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I love Pasha. So cute. Of course, I pretty much have a thing for sexy ballroom-dancing Russians. I think Dmitry was probably flat-out sexier than Pasha, but Pasha is a much better dancer outside of his style. Love him! I was so sad he was in the bottom 3, so I might actually have to vote tomorrow. If they send Pasha home I will be seriously angry.

Danny and Anya are fabulous. Quite professional and lovely, but maybe lack something in the personal connection realm. I do love that they don't do the ridiculous flashing their number for the camera bit. It is so annoying.

Lacey... gosh, she grates on my nerves. I don't even want to like her. But when she dances, she sparkles and I love watching her. She's fabulous. And, yeah, total stealth body. She did not look that toned fully clothed!
