Eight dancers left and only 2 weeks to go until we have another "America's Favorite Dancer" that can fade into obscurity and possibly become a choreographer on the very show that "made" them. Ladies and Gents - it's... So You Think You Can Dance!
During the dance intro's I noticed something interesting...
What's that say?! At first I thought it said "HIV REAL" and was thinking "Wow - is that a statement or is he trying to promote awareness?" And then I thought "Oh - is it I-V REAL"? Promoting awareness for those receiving intravenous fluids? Oh - like Jessica! And then I finally realized "Ohhhh - it's "4 Real" - as in season 4." Yup - 10-15 seconds of my life I'll neeeever get back. What a stupid shirt... I want one.
Tonight's judges include Nigel, Mary and plastic-looking dame called Toni Basil. Tony Basil?! Who the fuck is Toni Basil!? Oh - she's the "Mickey" song girl. That all makes sense then - right?! Apparently she's been working on Bette Midler's show in Vegas. So she is pretty much here to plug that show - just as Nigel did a few weeks back. I'm guessing Fox owns a shitload of stock in Ceasar's Palace.
Or maybe Rupert Murdoch's banging Bette and Basil.
First up - Will picks Courtney out of a hat and she picks Hip Hop and Samba as their dances. Jean-Marc is choreographing their samba and he comments that this dance is like a "feast for the hips"! Well - I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Mia dances the samba allll day long. Hey now.
Jean-Marc tries to teach Will to loosen up his hips...
But instead he ends up carrying out the hit Jessica paid for.
Meanwhile Courtney loves the samba. But that could be because...
She gets to be in the world's grossest orgi.
Their samba starts and Will definitely has his hips shakin' but it kind of feels like both of their bodies are just convulsing to the music onstage. And surprisingly it seems like they're off a couple of times. Is Will starting to get a little careless out there?! Maybe so...
"Look Ma Allen! NO HANDS!!!"
Nigel thought the dance was great - although he said it got too caught up in technique at times. He also makes a point to mention (for the 43rd time) Will's ripped body. And for some reason how he should be in a sequel to "300" called "300: The Dance Off". I'd LOVE to see that!
I can already see the comparisons!!!
Mary says she thinks she's being punk'd because she sees two contemporary dancers doing an amazing samba. I would've said she was being Punk'd because she looks like the Chiquita banana lady dressed her this evening.
Toni is impressed that they could learn another style so quickly. She said it was so good she forgot she was judging. Great. This bodes well for the rest of the evening. Take your uppers lady! It's time to earn your free ad time!
Up next, Comfort! She tells us she started dancing because she liked "getting down with the fellas" and she wasn't a girly-girl. Mmm hmm. I'd make an assumption here but I don't want to get entangled in a lawsuit with the island of Lesbos.
She also tells us her parents tricked her into going to a dance school that was all ballet instead of Hip Hop. I can't imagine who was more surprised - her or the teachers at that school.
Comfort performs her solo and she does her impression of Michael Jackson's vacation on...
The... Island... of... Lesbos.
Next couple up - Twitch and Katee! I'm really excited about this pairing. It also turns out that they've known each other for awhile - both being from the OC. God - I hope they don't know Lauren from "The Hills" because I'll lose SO much respect for them.
Their first dance is a contemporary routine by none-other-than Mia Michaels. GASP! The whole story behind the dance is that it's about a couple who fight and Mia describes the girlfriend as being "co-dependent, wild and insane". What was it they say about art imitating life?
As part of the rehearsal process, Mia teaches Katee to beat the shit out of Twitch. Cool! When's she gonna bring Jessica in and teach Katee how to break someone's soul too?!! Neat-o!

Best recap yet! You funny.
Toni Basil is as "street" as my old jewish grandmother.
BTW - can't you just picture Will ripping up his "IV Real" t-shirt, setting it ablaze and dancing around it with Debbie Allen?!

Us old folks who were actually around when "Mickey" was released did know her as a choreographer and yes, as a locker.
"Basil is a prolific choreographer who began as assistant choreographer on Shindig! an American music variety show which aired on the ABC network from September 16, 1964 to January 8, 1966. In addition, she is frequently credited with bringing street dance to prominence with The Urban Campbellocking group, The Lockers. She choreographed David Byrne's memorable, marionette-style dance from the music video for the Talking Heads song "Once in a Lifetime". She worked with Talking Heads again to direct and choreograph the music video for the song "Crosseyed and Painless". She also choreographed David Bowie's Diamond Dogs Tour in 1974 and Glass Spider Tour in 1987, and has worked with Bette Midler for many years, most recently on her 2008 Las Vegas show The Showgirl Must Go On. [4]"

OMG- Toni "herb" needs to stop. I felt like I was back in Art History class and the teacher was trying to prove the crap on the wall as being art. Not that the dances were crap during this episode- but when you look into too deeply rather then "That was beautiful and emotional" You sound like a crazy! IE. ORGANIC- feel it inside. Come on! LOL! It was just dancing.. Sheesh!
I did provide entertainment though!
Thanks for the chuckles!!

Great recap! The caption on Katee's photo made me laugh for a good 5 minutes.
I do think you're being too hard on Chelsea, though. She's a ballroom dancer, and they always have the short end of the stick when it comes to solos. I mean, what else is there to DO in her solo? She's got about three moves she can do by herself, and that's pretty much it. There's really no way to make it exciting.

I'm so glad you're back and recapping just as good as before.
I would love to hear your comments on the results show a few weeks back though. There were so many things to talk about:
-Kherington getting the boot (not all that surprising)
-Mia's kooky routine that the girls did (not that good)
-Nigel coreographing the guys number (which I thought was going to be hip hop with all the adidas pants flying around...but then turned out to be brodway and a little strange)
In any case, I know you're busy and don't get paid to do these, so I still appreciate anything I can get.

"I guess as you get to know these friendly faces it becomes harder to bust on them."
Loved the recap, but that line made me laugh the most. =D

They are all so good that it gets harder and harder to see them go. I almost wish they'd stop eliminating them now and just rank them each week. Obviously, the "popular vote" isn't a very accurate way of determining who had the weakest performance, either.
Another GREAT recap, slightly flawed by too much critism of Toni (what is she, a Vietnam vet?) and by the use of the term "Anyways", which reminds me of the guests on Jerry Springer (I, uh, watched it by accident one day).
Anyway, thanks!

Excellent recap! I too laughed out loud and at length to your Katee screencap with the ice and the rocket; How do you think of these things! Great Job!

As usual, I was laughing so hard the tears were flowing, and I got lost in my breathing and didn't know whether to breathe in or out... then I couldn't catch my breath at all but just kept reading and wiping the tears... this is some funny shit!

Did anyone else think that Tony Basil reminded them of Izma from The Emporer's New Groove? Scary.

Thank you Bbitz for returning-i was a bit scared there for a moment. Once again -great recap-the katee comment had me off my chair!!! And don't worry-you'll NEVER turn into Mary (LOL) I think Chelsea was a total bitch off screen but luckily her great dancing makes you forget it...Love you forEVA!

Hey everyone!
I'm working hard on the recap from last night and should have it (hold your breath) to you all by tomorrow.
Until then - some thoughts about the above comments:
*I may have been a little harsh on Ms. Basil. But come on - she DOES remind me of Yzma - so maybe it was my pent up aggression towards Disney villains.
*I agree that I was hard on Chelsea BUT the people that are used to dancing "solo" get TORN OUT for not stepping up when dancing with a partner. So I think it's only fair to give the "couples" dancers shit when they do so-so solos.
*I was glad Kherington got the boot. If I have to watch Bizarro Joker I'd rather see Heath Ledger do it.
*Mia's routine with the girls was good - but a little "too much" at the same time. Know what I mean? I don't like watching a routine and being able to tell who choreographed it within the first 5 seconds (ex Wade Robson).
*I love the word "Anyways" and I've used every "transitional" word I can think of on these things. I'm bound to repeat myself.
*Anyways, thanks for the "fuete" info Shelley! I'll try to remember. Try.
That's all I got for now! Stay tuned!

Nice recap! The move that Chelsea did in her solo and the move that is featured in both the ballroom clips shown in the show intro is called a bachacada and is most frequently done in samba!

I'm still eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the results show and Will's (imo)untimely departure last week...or did I miss them?

Can you stop with the gay jokes already?
Yeah, haha, it's the biggest running joke in dance that male dancers are gay and effeminate. It's also the biggest stereotype.
Yeah, it's true, there are male dancers who are gay. But the majority of them are not and - being friends with a lot of these guys who take so much flack for doing what they love - it really bothers me when people continue to perpetuate this ridiculous notion. It just makes it okay to continue taking shots at these guys.
Sure, it's "just a joke" but does that make it okay to tell racist jokes? No, I don't think so.
Besides, contrary to what you might think, the only guy on this season that is gay is Thayne. Some of them might "act" gay, but it comes with the territory. A lot of dancers are less masculine at times (e.g. they move much more gracefully) than non-dancer male counterparts, but that doesn't mean that they're gay, nor does it make it okay to make fun of them.
Your recaps, for the most part, have me laughing out loud. Why do you continue to use such a worn out theme?
P.S. jglau - it's NOT "just dancing". Us artsy types tend to be stereotyped as hippies for using terms like "organic" and "feeling it inside", but they're also totally true. If you don't dance, you don't understand.

Also, just for future reference, it's "closehold" not "closed hole". Although I would like to see Mary execute the latter.

Hi georgiababe,
Thanks for the spanking but I'll be making any jokes that I feel are funny but not incredibly insensitive.
The first thing I think of when making a joke is "Would I be offended if someone made this joke about me?" And 99% of the time it's "No". Because it's a joke - and it's on a fun website about a fun reality show. It's all ridiculous and none of it should ever be taken seriously. You're reading tvgasm - not CNN.
When people lose their ability to laugh and have a sense of humor, all rationality goes out the window and in comes censorship and retardation. Everyone has a nerve and every once in a while it's bound to get hit. That's just the way it works. You either take the little bit of bad with all the good - or you censor yourself and avoid reading material that might offend you. The latter choice usually leads to quite a boring, bitter and sheltered life.
I would never accuse anyone of being gay or make a joke like it's a bad thing. It's not a bad thing. I think it's great! For me, making a joke about someone someone's "gayness" is more in the sense of "Welcome to the Club" rather than "I plan on throwing a bottle at you as I drive by." And if they're not actually gay then they really shouldn't give a crap. They can laugh about what a retard I am as they frolic through fields of naked chicks (or boys in the girls' case). The joke's on me.
So good luck - feel free to keep reading and let me know what pisses you off - but keep in mind I have enough on my hands writing these things and making jokes without having to rock back and forth in my chair wondering if my joke is going to offend one of the infinite amount of people on the web that could read it.
Thanks for reading though!
Love and kisses, bBitz

Hi Georgia,
I usually don't have too much time on my hands to reply, but I had to on this one.
I am gay, non-white and work in the art industry. I appreciate all forms of art and I was just making a comment on how "silly" she sounds. I love the passion that every dancer has IE. Katie in Mia's routine in Ave maria. She's just really good at what she does and feels the dance. But it just seemed like Toni Basil was a little too into herself with all of the words like "organic" and whatever else. I understand it's all about what you see and experience, but come on. Really? She was being just a little dramatic. That's all I was saying.
PS.You think the only one that's gay is Thayne? Puh-lease.. I saw the show live 2 weeks ago and unless my gaydar is WAY OFF - he was NOT the only one. Not that any of it matters anyways. Who gives a shit?! They are - they aren't - making jokes either way doesn't change a thing.
21 of 23 | Posted by jglau78 | Posted on August 3, 2008 7:12 PM
Ah, okay, perhaps I just read it wrong.
I think Marquis was gay, but otherwise I say none. I know people have speculated Mark, but I don't think so. Seriously, I don't.
But you're right, it doesn't matter.
And Bbitz - well, whatever, you're the recapper. I am not a fan at all of political correctness and censorship and I'm not somebody who hates to laugh.
It just hits a little too close to home for my taste.

thanks for this blog - what a great way to avoid the stuff I should be doing! I'm a big fan of SYTYCD and went looking for what others thought of Toni Basil (yikes!). So glad I did - found this. Thanks again
