A million and one outfits out there and she wears this for the finale. My only explanation is she must've nailed the wardrobe lady's husband. Probably in that outfit.
Our top 20 come bee-bopping out. Good to see them all again. Of course Jessica is missing though. And no one even mentions it!!! WTF?! Poor Jessica. She's probably backstage, broken ribs and all, cutting up Mia's steak dinner.
Tonight's judges are Mia:

(Think Eurythmics/Annie Lenox) "Sweet dreams are made of cheese, I'd also like some good chinese! A platter of rolls, mashed potatoes and peas. I am always... cooking with something! Oooooohhh!"
We also have Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen (fresh from brow-beating Jessica in the back for ruining Will's chances), Nigel, Mary and Lil C'. How the hell did Lil' C make it up there over the other choreographers that did so much more?!
We find out from Adam that the winner gets to be in "Step Up: 3D". That should be interesting since the writing in those movies is always 1D. Can't wait!
The night starts off with a montage, of course. It's actually pretty amazing to see the talent that was this year. At first I thought it was just "OK" but I'm actually really pleased with the way the season's turned out. It actually has me looking forward to next season. As long as Mary becomes a deaf mute by that point.
Now it's time for the top 20 dancers! I looooved last year's Lion King dance - so my hopes are high! This year it's choreographed by Shane Sparks. Oh! Mr. Dance Crew comes crawling back for the finale!
I like how they try and feature all of the kids that got booted off in the beginning. Awww - remember Jaime? Glad he could take a break from waiting tables to join us for a moment. Then it's back to helping Jessica with that steak in the back.

After being cock-blocked by Courtney all season, Gev gets his payback with a crotch shot of America's top ten girls.
Tonight we have to fill 2 hours so all the judges are picking their favorite performances of the season. There's not much to say about them that I haven't before. They're the exact same thing. However it is worth mentioning that every single re-performance tonight was absolutely fantastic! Take a look a my previous recaps for comments on them.
Nigel chooses the Katee and Joshua Bollywood routine. One of my fav's too. Makes me want to dance AND eat Tikka Masala. Which you can't say about every dance. So yeah for diversity!
Mary chooses Courtney and Gev's Rumba. You know - the one where he grabs her ass? If you forget Gev has it on a loop on his tv, computer, cell phone, web page, watch, etc. Check it out.
Cat introduces the "Slave to Commercial Tie-In Snuggle Bear Happy Dance" contest winners.

The Grandma on the left was the grand prize winner. I love that they flew her out to LA. made her up like a whore (I think Mary did her make-up) all for 1.5 seconds of screen time. Welcome to Hollywood! There's the exit...
Next up there's a special segment of the war between the two best poppers not to make it on the show: Robert and Philip. Philip came down with "Ammonia" and couldn't go on to Vegas. That must be the more lethal, yet sterilized, version of "PNeumonia". And Robert made it but then dropped out when he realized he actually had to learn other dances. Go figure. Had you watched the show Robert?!?
They face off in an amazing "pop-off" and they're both HUGELY talented. However I wish they had someone choreograph a dance for them. That would've been GREAT. Instead of them kind of just standing there while the other did his thing.
Highlights:

Robert does that walk where his head detaches from his body. I saw that happen once when someone told Mia that they liked Mandy Moore better.

I had a heart attack at the end of it. It TOTALLY looked like they were gonna kiss! What!?! I hope their lip gloss also be poppin'.
The judges all vote on who they think won the dance off. Unfortunately they're a-holes about it. They should've just left it at "You're both great!" or split the vote. But instead they all praise Robert and Philip stands their like a broken little boy. Off to backstage with you now Philip! You can help Jessica fill Mia's feeding bucket with buttermilk and cheesecakes.
Next up - Adam chooses the hip hop number between Twitch and Comfort. It's a stellar number but there's one thing slightly different with tonight's performance:

Props to the camera guy that snagged this shot!
It's Lil' C's turn to choose a favorite (by the way - I love that they're all acting like they're JUST NOW picking their favorite dance. Meanwhile the dancers and props and shit are all being placed onstage as they "choose"). Lil' C wants to see Mark and Chelsie's hip hop (Taboleon is popular tonight!). I LOOOVED this dance and am psyched to see it again. Right after Lil' C wraps it up - shit - this guy can go on forever.

I like the part where they interpret how they felt when they got the boot from the show. That's right! HEART RIPPED OUT! Me too Markie! Me too!
The only thing I'm not a fan is Chelsie's "I gotta make!" face throughout the routine.
Afterwards, Mary's suspiciously missing from the judge's table. Hmmm - what's going on? OOOOHHHH MMYYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!! SHE'S DANCING!!!!
Holy shit! I'm am TOTALLY shocked. Look at her go! She lunges to and fro like a grandma taking her first steps after a seizure - but she's still got it! HUGE PROPS to her for getting off her ass and showing why she's up at the judges table. She needed a little credibility-boost after the screamfests of late. Oh and props to the newly disheveled-looking Demitri for tossing her around. Hope you didn't need that spine of yours for the rest of your life.

That ripping sound you heard? It was either his spine cracking, her spanks tearing, or the bowels of hell ripping open.
Next up - Mia goes on and on about how much she loved Desmond and Dwight's Pas De Deux for Katee and Will. She literally goes on forever about the choreographers. is this what they call "job security" in the dance world?
Katee and Will perform what must be one of the most beautiful and technically perfect dances in the show's run. They are amazing. Will's jean shorts and Katee's bangs can't even ruin it. Afterwards their both pumped that they nailed "that turn".
Adam, who is seriously frazzled from the awesomeness of the last dance, then reads word for word from the teleprompter to introduce "his" favorite dance - as selected by Nigel and put on the teleprompter for Adam to introduce.
It's Sonya's "Garden" jazz routine with Mark and Courtney! Love it. It's so creepy good that you want to watch it in person and yet from a safe distance all at once. Kind of like Sonya herself.
Time for the first person of the final four to get the boot. And it's..... COURTNEY!!! I'm soooo not surprised. Totally called that one. She didn't stand a chance against Katee & Joshua's skill and Twitch's ability to charm the audience. She gets a hell of a montage though. What more could you ask for?!? Oh - other than winning of course.
Courtney says that she always takes Jeff's (stage manager maybe?) advice to be a "sponge". I really wanted Jeff to speak up and yell "NO NO - I said to use one! Because you're a HO!" but alas - he's a guy with tact. Either that or he's afraid of her "Tony Soprano" of a father.
After many tears Courtney gets the boot and it's time for the top five guys to perform, "Five Guys Named Moe":

Well... if I had to guess I'd say at least 2 of them could be called "Mo".
Next up - it's time for a routine from Wade Robson's little Cirque du Soleil creation - "Believe". It's pretty cool. It's definitely a FREAKY little show and is clearly the love child of Wade and Cirque - two very unique styles.

It's supposed to be an "homage" to all of the rabbits killed by magicians. WEIRD. But I just kept thinking of...

"I killed the wabbit! Killed the wabbit! Killed the WABBIT! OH!"
Well - I guess next time I go to Vegas and feel the need to watch an acid trip live onstage - I'll hit the show up!
Now we find out who the next one booted off is! NOW it's gonna get good - I feel like it's a dead heat with these 3. If I had to guess I'd say it's Twitch.
AND I'M WRONG!!! WHAT?!!?? KATEE?!!? NOOOOO!!!!! Come on now! She was TOTALLY better than Twitch. Who the frig is voting!? Ugh. Friggin' teeni-boppers. That's who I'm blaming.
Katee looks a little shocked but her mood defintely picks up when she finds out that being the top girl this year means she wins $50,000 dollars! Wow. After taxes she can totally buy a KIA! You know Courtney's backstage going "Son of a BITCH!"
Katee is ecstatic and Cat comments "I probably finished you off now!" Ummm... WTF does that mean?! Did I miss something? If either of them starts smoking a cigarette I'm going to playback.
Back from commercial, Cat is joining the judges at the table. She talks with Debbie Allen about missing her this season. Debbie says she was at home - yelling at the TV. I know stick and stones may hurt your bones - but I'm pretty sure Debbie's words might've been what broke Jessica's ribs.
And now it's time for a performance by the Debbie Allen Dance Academy! Aww - little tappers all over the place. You think these little cherubs have to tap while they rub Debbie's feet and feed her grapes everyday?
AND THEN WHAT'S THIS?!!? NIGEL JOINS THE ROUTINE! AND HE CAN TAP! Wow. First Mary - now this?!?! This show's totally turned into "So You Think You Can Still Dance?"!!! Nigel actually does a pretty great job - except for the random scripted bits that he felt the need to add.

Nigel: "This is worse than the NY subway!" WHAT?! What the hell does that have to do with anything?! Like did he really think during rehearsal, "You know what this number needs at the finish?!? A reference to NYC transit! AH HA! BRILLIANCE!" ?!?!?
My favorite part is yet another scripted bit where Nigel has one of the little kids hand him a handkerchief to wipe the sweat off of his face and then he hands it back!

It's amazing how at the age of 6 this kid manages a look of "I'll play along with you old man." and "Fuck you for making me do this asshole" all in one. This kid's got potential!
The rest of the judges are SO excited that Nigel and Mary danced that Debbie suggests that ALL of the judges should be required to dance. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT!!!! OMG - I'd pay so much to see Mia hurl that ass across the stage and watch Tyce go prancing behind it. DANCE MAGIC!
Up next - Mary chooses Twitch and Katee's "Mercy" number as her favorite. We get to see it again - although it seems a little sad when the freshly booted Katee is banging on the door of the still-in-the-running Twitch. If it was me I may have figured a way to slam his finger in the door. Oh well - she's 50K richer than he is now - cause there's no friggin' way he's beating Joshua. Unless of course America is COMPLETELY retarded. Say it ain't so America. That'd be a tragedy.
Speaking of tragedies - it's the Jonas Brothers! Question: Weren't the Hanson brothers enough to get us through at least 2040 before another one of these came along?! Oh God they're just AWFUL. I love how the two "pretty" ones get put out front while the ugly duckling gets stuck in the back with the guitar. Careful kids - all that time back there on his own - he's bound to cook up ideas about whacking you douche-bags and going solo. First he just needs to learn to play the guitar - then the sky's the limit!
As an added plus some GIANT rap guy thunders out and starts doing his own thing. For a good moment I think "Is he just crashing the song?!"

It only gets better when you see the looks on the kid's faces when Monstro raps on over to them. I swear I saw one of them mouth the words "PLEASE DON'T EAT ME."
Up next - Debbie Allen (SHOCKINGLY) doesn't choose one of Will's dances as her favorite but chooses Twitch and Kherington's waltz instead. It's the one that they did for Jean-Marc's little girl, remember. You know - the one where Mia opened up her mouth and ragged on Kherington for SMILING because, according to Mia, she should've been SAD because of his daughter's predicament. Classic moment. Almost as good as her wanting to stab Chelsie for being pretty.
For Nigel's second choice he chooses Joshua and Katee's hip hop routine. The first one they ever performed together. It rocks. Again. Except for the fact that it should have been the two of them in the final 2 together. ROBBED!!!

"Dear Katee, Remember that time I was America's Favorite Dancer and you weren't? That was fun. Love, Joshua PS - Don't ask "Why not me?" It was your bangs.
Cat tells us it's time to catch up with some of our favorite dancers of season's past.:
Nick Lazzarini: He's a dancer with Janet Jackson and was on the show Dance Life.

He is also a bank robber, circa 1920.
Let's see - what else - umm Allison from season 3 had kid. Congrats. What that has to do with dance is beyond me. Unless she popped the kid out while in the middle of a contemporary routine - I... don't... care. Meanwhile I probably just gave Mia an idea for next season.
Neil (EEEEEEHHHH!!!!) is in the show "Altar Boyz" in NYC. He's still hot so all is well there.
Donnyelle is choreographing with Shane Sparks and getting married! Awww! Cute! I hope it's not to Shane. Cause you KNOW he'll wear a friggin' cap through the whole ceremony.
Lacey designed her own clothing line. Ooohhh I get it. Well at least I know who to blame for Cat's outfits this season. Right?
We know "Travith" is working on "SYTYCD" and...

He looks like hell! GOOD LORD! Can someone please feed this kid and get him a haircut?! What happened??!
And as we know from Mary's number, Demetri is still here and still likes to rip off his shirt. The only difference now is - no one wants him to.
And as a final dance number of the night we get to see all of these "favorite" dancers perform a group dance. It's pretty good. I could have done with less of some and more of others. And where the hell was Danny!? And Sabra?! This was a mockery of "favorites"!!! Except for Neil. Yeah Neil!
AND NOW WE COME TO THE FINAL MOMENT!!!! It's down to Twitch and Joshua - after over 60 million votes - it's..... JOSHUA!!!!!!!!
What an amazing moment!!!! It would have been great to see it. However the producers decided to unload 60 million tons of confetti on the stage.

Congrats Joshua!!! Doesn't he look thrilled? I think. Maybe? Oh fuck it.
Joshua takes a moment to tell everyone "Never let anyone tell you you can't do something (awww!) because with God everything's possible! (Oy.)"
And that's it folks!!!! Joshua is America's favorite dancer!!! And I am officially DONE!!! Wow. It's been a long haul and I thank all of you readers for sticking with me and leaving comments. This is my second all-nighter and I'll be happy if I never see another turn, flip or pas de bourree again... at least until next season. :)
Let me know what you all thought of the finale! The good, the bad and especially the ugly - come on - one last time - and DISH IT!!!

katee. was. robbed.
but i'm glad they gave her the $50K. maybe they found out ahead of time and they were like, um, we need to do something about this. like, now.
mary looked good, though i didn't think she moved particularly quickly, but damn. those legs. who knew? all you ever see is chest-up and all you ever hear is a screech similar to jim carrey's "most annoying sound in the world" in dumb and dumber.
all in all, i agree, this was a great season. after about top 6 i didn't want to see anyone go. hope they can find dancers that are just as good next season. but i didn't think those "best dancers that didn't make it" were all that great, to be honest. it seemed a little weird and like a pointless time-filler to me. would have rather seen another of our season faves again.

I was also shocked by no mention of Danny or Sabra (they were both phenomenal!) because I am dying to know what they are up to. Anyone heard anything?

Just a little FYI, on the first pic of the past dancers, you listed Blake McGrath as Nick Lazzarini. Blake actually came in 3rd place, and was the dancer all the other dancers kind of had a problem with during auditions/Vegas week because he was already established. I actually saw him when he was a backup dancer for Britney when I was 14. And now that I think of it, Brian Friedman, who used to be a judge, was a Britney choregrapher and had worked with Blake previously, so I wonder why the he was able to judge since Debbie Allen wasn't able to judge since she knew Will. Hmm...
As for the win, I actually was quite pleased. I knew the final 2 would be either Joshua/Katee or Joshua/Twitch, and I figured Joshua would take it. I'm happy. Joshua will be a good fit for Step Up 3D(I really wish that franchise would end). Plus, Twitch has already worked with Shankman on Hairspray.

First, but not most... a thousand thanks for such timely and witty recaps. (OK - I'm not actually going to type "thank you" a thousand times.)
1K * "thanks"
I too predicted Joshua. I'm really happy for him. So many of these people were so talented this season. Wow! And likable. Hope they all have great, happy careers. (I even came to appreciate some of the "new" choreographers).
thanks for a great season of recapping. You EARNED that $50K bonus (play money) tvgasm awards for "best recapper"!
Cat rocks/is the bomb (substitute appropriate current phrase).

Yes Lalia thank you - that is Blake and NOT Nick. Blake gets on my nerves...he was so cocky throughout SYTYCD and was pretty much a jerk on Dance Life too. I love how they showed him as a judge in Canada and he said something to the effect of don't try my jump if you can't do it better then me...just UGH!! Annoying! I am happy Joshua won, but Katee would've been a great choice too. Will was my absolute fave...he won me over completely w/ the James Brown solo b/c it showed he had a personality too. Oh well. I will definitely miss this show, but can't wait for DWTS to start in the fall!!
5 of 19 | Posted by LNNC92 | Posted on August 8, 2008 3:00 PM
Ooops! Yeah - I totally know that and have no idea why I wrote Nick instead of Blake. Aside from it being around 4:30am when I wrote that section. Nick is the sweet one. Blake is a travesty with a lil' too much eye shadow. Got it!
Thanks for your kind comments everyone! Hopefully I'll be back in the fall - not on a dance show though - I did DWTS last season and need a break from the 3 hour a week monsters!
Love, bBitz

Although I was so sad that Mark and Chelsie did not make the final 4 (I wanted one of them to take it) I am totally fine with Joshua taking the title.
Because this is a popularity contest, really, I always judge the dancers based on 3 factors: 1)personality/likability 2) technique 3)versatility/ability to adapt and connect with new dance/partner.
I felt like the two people this season who demonstrated all three consistently were Mark and Joshua, so I am glad that at least one of them was able to take the title.
Now let's see what happens next year...

I knew Joshua would win. So damn good for a dancer without any "formal" training. I was dissapointed that they didn't have the following dance routines...(which were my favorites...) Twitch and Kerington-however the hell you spell her name...doing that hip-hop where they escaped from prison....i LOVED that one. Also again Twitch and Ker..ton with that "bed" routine-she was like a ghost who kept popping up behind him. You would think i liked Twitch....but my favorite was Chelsie...from the first time she tried out/danced with that guy she "borrowed" from someone else...(meanwhile he had a tryout number on) That bleeding love with Mark was soooooo great also. I am glad they had that one as one of the favorites last night. OH thank you for making me laugh my ass off with that whole Mia Michaels...."Sweet dreams are made of cheese, I'd also like some good chinese! A platter of rolls, mashed potatoes and peas. I am always... cooking with something! Oooooohhh!" OMG toooooooooo funny. OH and the Joshua winning picture... Congrats Joshua!!! Doesn't he look thrilled? I think. Maybe? Oh fuck it.
so so so f-ing funny...thank you for recapping this show. Tvgasm is lucky to have you!

I don't think the poppin-mime styles of Robert and Phillip translated to the stage at ALL. They were both much better one-on-one way back in the beginning.
Mary's dancing underwhelmed me. Sorry, Mare. I mean, she's got skillz, but it would have been better to see a nonsexy dress and a slower dance. The whole thing was too grandma-wants-a-man looking, like you said.
If Joshua had no "formal" training then why did he say he did chores around the dance studio in exchange for lessons last night in his couch chat with Cat? That would be a SNL skit worth trying: Couch Chat With Cat.
Whoever Jeff is, he gave Courtney her flowers with gobs of loud plastic sheeting still on them. Bad form, Jeff. (He fixed it for Katee.)
I have to say, I enjoyed hearing Joe Jackson music on sytycd. I just did. And the Five Guys dance was much better this time, because they were wearing cheesy, shiny suits. Loved it.
Liked seeing Nigel dance, but, like you, I don't get what his spoken interjections were supposed to have brought to the table. Shut up, Englishman. Shut up and dance. Dance for your life!
The Jonas Brothers confuse me. They were singing so pitifully and meekly.. it was as if they were standing in their bedroom playing air guitar. Miley can't sing, either, but at least she sells it. She belts out those caterwauling lines. And the little sing-up hiccup thing they do at the end of every line... ohhhh noes. Boys get yourselves to a vocal coach STAT. Man that was torture.
Allison from season 3 looked so completely different, I didn't even recognize her. I'm with you guys though, where was Sabra?? The only thing wiki says about post-sytycd is, "Johnson appeared on the February 2008 cover of 'movmnt' magazine, with Danny Tidwell, as part of a article on 'Keep It Real,' a non-profit organization." Isn't she working as a dancer? Why wasn't she at least interviewed in the montage for this finale?
I did not like Mia's kilt number from last night..not even a little bit. What was it supposed to be? A story of a girl from Longuyland, an Asian chick and two black guys that went on a fine Scottish adventure underneath Mia's skirt? NO THANKS, K.
Great job w/ the recaps. You made it a lot more fun.
9 of 19 | Posted by Memememe | Posted on August 9, 2008 1:41 PM
Katee was definately robbed! I like Joshua, but he was really starting to get on my nerves towards the end.... Katee was perfect in every routine...
I don't know, for me it was a pretty meh season over all.... Your re-caps are awesome tho and can't wait for next season!
Thanks for keeping us entertained!! :D

It appears as though I will NEVER get to watch this episode, as I don't live in America, and I can't find the torrent for it ANYWHERE. Unless there is someone who still has like, a tape player, and recorded it ,and can send it to me. But the country I live in has a fucking STUPID government, and therefore I won't be able to receive the tape until after Halloween. I'm not going to name names, because it's a communist government and they censor EVERYTHING, but the Olympics are being held here right now.
That said, WHAT?? How did Twitch finish higher than Katee? Don't get me wrong, I love Twitch, but Katee was flawless.
Also, remember season 2 when they had Dmitry and Natalie do a dance on the finale? Why can't they do more stuff like that, with couples that never danced together on the show? I mean, they have time, cuz they're no longer in the competition, and then we wouldn't have to see dances that we've already TVo'ed or downloaded...
So, anyone still use VHS and want to send me the finale?

Rock Star, try mininova...pretty sure the torrent is there

does anyone else think it's a shame that Twitch didn't get a recap? (or 2nd place moolah like Katee) Just got shoved off stage during the confetti blizzard

neither did Danny and Danny deserved it more. I agree... katee was robbed. but I'm glad she got the 50 thou and a montage.
Thank you bBitz!! have laughing my ass off with these recaps. enjoy the break and hope to see you next summer.

That ripping sound you heard? It was either his spine cracking, her spanks tearing, or the bowels of hell ripping open.
ohmigod...best screen grab EVER! As soon as I saw that all I could think of was the view of those poor souls directly behind her Mia and Dimitri...MY EYES!!!!!

I totally meant Mary and Dimitri...not Mia...I was wiping the tears of laughter and it is hard to type...

Did anyone notice Joshua throwing the "westside" sign after he won?? or was it just me??

SO many thoughts to share with you:
1) Li'l C is much more fun to watch - he's well-spoken (better than a lot of them) and has great criticism. I love him almost as much as I love Adam as a judge.
2) Tikka Masala rules.
3) Mia's hair sucked.
4) The pop war was awesome.
5) I totally agree about how the judges were acting like their favorites were spontaneous when they blatantly weren't and couldn't be... thanks for pointing it out because we noticed it while watching. DUH SYTYCD... we're not stupid! (Well not about that)
6) Mary's dance - totally agree. Well now we know when her perma-smile comes in handy. But props to her because I should have such great legs at her age. I love how she totally chose who she thinks is the hottest guy to dance with... the cougarness on the stage was palpable and hilarious. I love how you mentioned Spanx.
7) I fast-forwarded my DVR through Mia's brown-nosing.
8) 5 Guys Named Mo was my favorite dance. (That and No Air, and the Joshua/Katee broadway routine that they didn't do)
9) I think Nigel kind of stole the kids' thunder when he came out and danced with them, but otherwise it was great to see him dance and I think the judges SHOULD dance on the show. Def. I agree with you on his scripted bits - dumb.
10) Where the hell WAS Sabra?! Not even a mention of last year's winner - what's up with that?
11) Twitch was such the gentleman when Joshua won, he's a gem I love him. I love them both.
12) I agree - Cat totally should've been nominated. She has so much more heart.
I'll miss the show in the off-season! American Idol (well, maybe the auditions will) cannot possibly be as entertaining. Mary makes Paula look sane. (And at least we know Mary has talent - hey oh!)
