Talking about manipulation, let's move on to Max and Kayla. Did you know how awesome Kayla is? She is, you know. Just ask the judges. Now it may sound like I don't like Kayla, but that isn't true. I just don't like being told how much I need to like Kayla. Sound familiar? And yes, I have a problem with authority also.
Kayla would like us to know that Max is like the mom of the house, if your mom had a penis, I guess.

The thing we need to know about Kayla? Well aside from being the most awesomest awesome dancer that is awesome, she is constantly texting. CONSTANTLY. Yeah, that's not helping in the show's quest to make me love her.

I bet she texts while she's driving
This week they'll be working with Brian Friedman on a pop jazz routine. Whoa! Brian Friedman and Shane Sparks return on the same show?!?! I may have just died and gone to heaven.
But where is the golden afro?
No matter, I love him with or without hair. The story of this dance is that Kayla is a princess and Max is coming in to perform for her, but he really wants to steal her throne. He wants a strong regal element and is glad that Max has that ballroom training to help out with that feeling. The number starts and holy crap! What the hell are they wearing? Someone really needs to cut off the costumers' supply of 'shrooms.

I really enjoyed this number, though I wish the cameraman had kept it wide instead of zooming in. There were entire sections that we lost half of the performance because we couldn't see what was going on with the other dancer. It's annoying. Shoddy camerawork or not, I'm sure we'll be subjected to another Kayla tongue bath courtesy of the judges.
We'll start with Lil C who starts off by telling us that dance is a language. Each choreographer has there own language, so to speak, and on this show you have to pick that up in a very short period of time. He thinks Max did very good, but he has nothing to say to Kayla because she is amazing. And here we go again.
Mary is not digging Max's outfit, but she saw past it to watch his dancing. She was surprised by him but didn't think he stole the throne. Kayla is wonderful, blah blah blah blah; please see Lil C's comments above. Nigel continues to heap praise on Kayla and I really really hope that all this praise doesn't alienate the voters.
Excuse me while I get a towel. All that tongue bathing created a spit puddle under my TV.

This summer, watch a chubby chaser look for love. I hope there's a lot of hot tub action!
Back to the show! Jonathan wants us to know that Karla is actually a bad ass hip hop dancer, and a member of the Boogie Bots. Don't know who they are? Then you don't watch ABDC. But even if you watched ABDC you would not have known that Karla is a Boogie Bot since she didn't compete with them on that show. Bad ass my ass.

Boogie Not
Jonathan likes to sing. Badly.

American Idol, here I come!
This week they will be dancing a contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey on loan from So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Uh oh. After last week's weak showing, I think they are going to be in trouble for sure with this one. I don't think Jonathan's going to be able to pull it off.
They're dancing to "Falling Slowly" by The Frames, and HOLY SHIT you guys, I take back everything I just said about Jonathan not being able to pull it off. I LOVE this number.

You know, when I watched this the first time, I thought Stacey had maybe gone a little easy on Jonathan and given Karla the more difficult portion of the routine. I was wrong. I specifically watched Jonathan the second time I watched the number, and he had some difficult steps in there that he executes really well. This is my favorite routine of the night. Hands down.
Cat says she just got the first Deeley chills of the season. Mary thinks that Jonathan performed this style better than his own. All this goodness has made her dizzy. Yeah, thats it, I'm sure. Nigel couldn't believe it. There were no false moves. He says there's a real lesson to be learned here. Last week they were on the verge of being eliminated and this week they're blowing everyone away. Lil C thought they danced it beautifully and that it had a perfect balance. In other words, it was buck.

Haven't read the recap yet, because I am actually watching the results show, but my first reaction to Janette when her legs were splayed open above Brandon's head was also "Good thing she's got a good waxer!"

wow- thanks for the great and quick recaps! Why does every season Cat have to look so awful-lol on the maxipad dress. this week was a little dissapointing. It fell a little short- i mean i was so glad to see shane sparks back this year and then the couples who danced his numbers did a crappy job- he must be feeling-"why the hec I came back?" LOL anyways looking forward to your next recap.....

2 things I need to share - I feel the same exact way about Asaka...I really want to like her but there is just something about her I don't like! And I also have the same credit card compulsion. I have the same problem with my alarm clock. I've never overslept, yet I check at least 5-10 times that I actually turned it on and that it is loud enough.

I definitely agree about the Asuka comment. I'm just not a huge fan of hers and I feel like she is always acting. As far as the dancing goes, I actually really liked Kupono and Ashley. I thought their hip hop was good and much better than Jason and Katelyn's (is that her name?). In any case, I'm happy how the results turned out. I wont ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet :)

I, too, had to watch the Jonathan piece again to appreciate his part in it, but I have to admit that I liked Max and Kayla's better (though they really are pimping her out, big time). And thanks for the Season One disco--I always find myself looking so forward to the disco numbers only to be disappointed. Brandon and Janette's was definitely the most exciting I've seen, if not perfect in synchronization and technique.
Also glad you mentioned the commercial for "More to Love." My mom and I agree that we probably would be more likely to watch the show if it were more honestly named "The Bachelor for Fat People."

PottyMouth, I love your recaps. You had me cracking up at the introduction (about the stakes being high and the costume designers too, lol)
I just wanted to mention that I understand the resentment of Kayla being shoved down our throats. I think the reason I'm still in her corner is that when I first saw her audition, before she danced she just had this look that suggested to me that she was going to suck, so I was shocked when she actually danced well and she became one of my faves from then. But, we'll see how I feel about her as the weeks progress. The pimping hasn't gotten to me yet and there aren't really any other girls that I like that can take her place (Ashley was growing on me, but...well....you know)
And I'm glad that a lot of people liked Ade and Melissa's routine. I think they're fabulous dancers. But I didn't feel like Melissa was sharp enough, although I the emotion she put into it. On the other hand, I thought Ade got the movement down almost perfect, but his lack of emotional performance just drives me batty (he's almost always smiling when smiling is not called for or otherwise his expression just seems blank)
Ah well, to each there own. Once again, thanks for the recap!

Oh, and I love Kayla's grandpa -- he seems like such a doll! I want to adopt him! Maybe that's why I'm still rooting for her despite the shameless pimping...hmmmm

I'm with all of you as far as Asuka goes. I've never been fond of her, even back in auditions. But, on the other hand, I am super psyched that Shane and Brian are back! I always kinda knew the reasons for Shane being gone, but it was like Brian just disappeared without a mention! I definitely did not expect to see him back, but what a great surprise!

Personally, I like the behind the scenes stories. It might seem unimportant, but the little bits of information they give tell you a lot about each dancer's personality. I would enjoy the show far less if I knew nothing about them or their history. I don't expect people to have riveting personal tales - let's face it, most people's lives aren't all that fascinating. I don't think we're going to hear, "I was once abducted by aliens" anytime soon.
As far as the dancing goes, I was actually happy to see some of the weaker first week couples come back with a strong second performance. I don't like to see one or two people become the 'whipping boy' (or girl).
So much of surviving the first few weeks comes down to the luck of the draw. Imagine if Jonathan and Karla had danced their comtemporary number the first week instead of the second. How different would most people's perception of Jonathan be if that had been their first impression of him? In my opinion, Ade and Melissa have gotten the luckiest ‘picks’ so far (maybe that really does give Ade his superpowers – the ability to gain beneficial picks each week?). They have become something of fan favorites, yet they haven't really been exposed to anything too far outside the styles of their genres. If they had gotten krump the first week they'd probably be gone already, especially with their overall lack of screen time (although I’m glad they’re still around).

Love your recaps!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned how much Randi looks like Kellie Pickler. It's like the Caitlin/Meredith Baxter thing for me - completely distracting.

I really just cannot get into the whole Kayla thing. I thought this weeks dance did show us a little why the judges like her, but I just don;t think she is as great as they say. Maybe I need to see a little more of her personality - show a little spunk woman!
I was also increadibly surprosied at how well JOnathan danced this week. I LOVED it (and got goose bumps too I might add - I am such a sap)

I, too found this show disappointing this week...and I don't get the Asuka love or the Kayla worship.
Loved the sprinkling of Hugh throughout the spot-on recap, though.
And my husband and I have rechristened the new fox show "The Fatchelor."

I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in and let you know that I just read an article on/interview with Cat, and she said she's doing her own styling this year! She said with all the outrageous costumes she didn't want to look bland and boring. :D

cattyfan: I'm so ashamed I didn't think of "The Fatchelor" myself. Brilliant!

"The dance is really very lovely, but I don't see what being an orphan had to do with any of it. Perhaps that aspect would have played better if they were dancing to "Tomorrow" or something."
bwahaha
Apparently, I'm heartless...I didn't get the Asuka-Vitolio routine at all. It was just meh for me.
Kayla and Max's dance was good, I'm sure, but I couldn't concentrate at all due to Max's obvious lack of personality. Did anyone else have this problem?
Another blog that I read has been comparing Jonathan to Davd Archuletta, so it made me lol so much when he proved he can't sing.
Is anyone else seeing the Phillip/Ivan (season 2) similarities, or is it just me? Both struggled with ballroom early on, but somehow survived. I think, like Ivan, Phillip is going to redeem himself, go far in the competition, anger America when he stays long past his time, and, like Ivan, I'll love every minute of it, while everyone else is angry. (Insert my own Hot Tamale Train Scream)
Finally, I want to thank you PottyMouth for great recaps. I also really appreciate how you respond to every single post. I've made it part of my daily visit to TVGasm to check your recaps to see if you responded to my comments. =)

Great recap PottyMouth!
And for those of you who love her recaps - you should try watching the show with her live during chat - she's a hoot!
As for Randi - she's a dead ringer for Tatum O'Neal.
I loved the Max/Kayla routine - I even liked the costumes because they were so bizarre on those two pretty quiet personalities.
So Cat is styling herself? EEK. Though I did love the white suit on the results show.

Fantastic recap, yet again (and thank you for keeping Hugh in the mix!!!)!
This week was big MEH for me, with the exception of Evan/Randi and Jonathan/Karla. The disco routine was pretty good, too, but difficult to appreciate because of the speed. (The shitty camera work could also be ruining some of the routines for me.)
Right now, I'm all about the Kasprzaks... Evan right now and Ryan for Season 6!!!
17 of 27 | Posted by slumrville | Posted on June 22, 2009 11:24 AM
I agree with everyone about Asuka, she is trying too hard to be sexy I think. I can't wait until her and Vitolio get hip hop and she goes home. I love Shane Sparks and Jason and Caitlin screwed that dance up badly. They were both grinning cheesily (is that a word?) the whole time.
Also when you mentioned how Phillip had trouble lifting Jeanine, they didn't even do that lift in the show routine so he must have never gotten in down in rehearsals. All in all a lackluster week but I love seeing what kind of sartorial messes Cat dons. Love her though, she should be nominated for an Emmy as best host.

PottyMouth you are amazing! I read your recaps every week, but don't ever feel compelled to comment. This week I needed to break my silence on a few points:
1. Why did Cat think her bed skirt would make a sassy dress?
2. I appreciate Lil C's critiques, but people like him who try to sound smart by using too many adjectives and metaphoric phrases are just really annoying.
3. My fiance does the best David Archuletta impression and as soon as he saw Jonathan he made the connection. Classic.
4. Get it straight people: Randi looks exactly like Dr. Arizona from Grey's Anatomy.

Okay, this is my first time posting but I have always read your recaps. They are HILARIOUS!! I have to say a couple of things:
1. When I first saw Jonathan, I thought he was David Archuleta. And when in the segment it showed him singing, I just thought that he was totally David Archuleta so now I just call him David Archuleta (even though I don't like David Archuleta....but I'm liking Jonathan.)
2. I think Jason looks a lot like Danny Pino from Cold Case. He could be his younger brother or something.
3. I thought listening to Lil C's comments was hilarious. I think we should now call him Philosopher C instead.
4. Once again, I LOVE your recaps PottyMouth. I can't wait for next week!!

georgiababe: I want the name of that waxer!
yuds101: I was thinking the same thing about Shane – I’m so glad he’s back and I hope this doesn’t keep him away.
yankeesfan: I’m so glad to find out there’s someone out there as nutty as I am!
leslie_pcc: I agree that Kupono and Ashley’s hip hop was better than Jason and Caitlin’s, but really they were both less than I wanted them to be.
Allison: I love digging up dances from past seasons – I’m glad you’re enjoying them too!
Lizbot: I agree about Kayla. It pisses me off that they’re pimping her so hard because she probably would be one of my favorite girls otherwise. I just can’t stand when they try to shove someone down our throats. I like her grandpa too – but I have a soft spot for cute grandpas!
brattygrl: I’m with ya – I love Shane and was super excited to have him back and then Brian too? So So So happy about that.
ohhhyeah: You make a really good point about Ade and Melissa – it will be really interesting to see how they do when they’re really out of their elements.
AmyL: I’ve heard three or four possibilities for Randi, not sure I see the Pickler thing. I’ll have to take a closer look this week.
brat: Jonathan was the best surprise of the night for me – I didn’t think he had it in him.
cattyfan: The Fatchelor? Mwahahahahaha. Hilarious.
qupert: Where was the article? I must read it!! And Cat needs to fire herself if that’s true.
tv freak: I do see the Phillip/Ivan similarities, and like you, I loved Ivan and was happy to see him stay. I thought he grew a lot as a dancer, and Phillip definitely has that same potential. And thanks to you all for leaving for comments – I love seeing the show from different perspectives and always looks forward to seeing what everyone will have to say.
Tink: I had such a blast with you all in chat last week! I’m looking forward to the next time.
slumrville: I am with you on Evan and Ryan – they’d better put Ryan in the top twenty for next season or I’m gonna be hella pissed.
Yanksfan24: Asuka and hip hop? My mind cannot even wrap itself around how horrible I think that will be. **shudder**
mama j: I’m so glad you broke your silence – ruffled bed skirt??? Hilarious!! I wish I had thought of that. I’ve never watched Grey’s Anatomy so I have no idea who Dr. Arizona is – now I’ll have to go look her up.
Hm21: Welcome! And thank you! It is funny that people are compare Jonathan to Archuleta and then he loves to sing, but can’t sing.
Thanks for all the great comments y’all! It’s so nice to start the day with a smile.
SWAK, PottyMouth

PottyMouth:
It believe it was the most recent issue of EW. It was a double issue full of "Musts" of the year, and Cat was the Must Host. (It has the uber-hot Ryan Reynolds on the cover.)
If you listen carefully, the other night when Nigel complimented her on how awesome she looked in her white suit, she said that her boyfriend will be happy to hear that, since he bought it for her.
:D

i said this in an earlier recap, but, for all the people arguing over who Randi looks like...It's totally Chelsea from a few seasons back on Big Brother.
24 of 27 | Posted by tv freak | Posted on June 23, 2009 8:11 AM
NOOOOO - Chelsea wasn't remotely cute and Randi is cute. I'm going to post side by side photos of Randi and Tatum O'Neal in the forums to prove they are separated at birth.

Great comments. And I love how you cleverly manage to relevently post pics of Hugh Jackman. The last pic you posted is so beautiful.

Since the critique from last week I think Asuka was trying to show the judges that she and Vitolio had "chemistry". However, since we already have it on film that she told him he didn't appeal to her, that failed miserably. She didn't look (as Mia would say) authentic (which Mia never does, either, now that I think about it).
