So You Think You Can Dance: Mia Vs. Wade: The Ultimate Battle

Holla Gasmi! Tonight the couples will be taking to the dance floor twice (finally), hoping to secure a place in the top ten and on the tour. And the randomness of the picks continues to be suspect. Also? Tyce should shut the fuck up. THIS. Is So You Think You Can Dance (dance....dance)!

SYTYCD20090708a

LOVE Cat's look tonight.

This week's super special guest judge will be Tyce.

SYTYCD20090708b

Is it just me, or does he look a little creepy here?

And, of course, The Screecher and Dr. Teeth are also on hand to judge. But enough of that! We've got twelve dances to get through and only two hours to do it!

First up are Melissa and Ade. They will be dancing a disco choreographed by none other than Doriana Sanchez. I predict a lotta lifts. Doriana tells us that style in disco is really important because if you don't get it right, it can look a little cheesy. I thought looking cheesy was the point of disco.

Ade thinks it's going to go either really good, or really bad. Thanks Ade! I was thinking it could go really bad or really good, so I'm glad you cleared that up for me. Doriana thinks they should pray to the disco gods.

SYTYCD20090708c

Disco is dead, bitch!

They're dancing to "Move On Up" by Destination. It looks like Cat may have had some material left over from her dress last week, because Ade is dressed like a human disco ball. He definitely out dances Melissa in this dance, but I have to say, she's holding her own here.

SYTYCD20090708d

There are a lotta lifts and spins, and it gets me thinking about if the other guys are strong enough to lift her. Brandon is, for sure, but I don't think Kupono, Evan or Phillip are. Not sure about Jason. They do a decent job of it, Melissa is a little too choppy, but she does better than I thought she would. There are a ton of spins at the end going right into their ending pose, and Melissa falls, but she goes with it, which I appreciate.

SYTYCD20090708gif.gif

Nigel thinks it was an incredible start to the evening. Disco is supposed to be exciting, and that was exciting. But you know what's funny about it? Next week the American Ballet Theater is going to be in L.A. and they're doing Romeo and Juliet. HAHAHAHA.....wait. What? How exactly is that funny? Oh, because Melissa and Ade danced Romeo and Juliet last week! HAHA......wait. I still don't get it. Oh, what if ABT dances disco at intermission? H. Never mind.

Nigel also thinks that if you're going to fall on your ass (Melissa) you should do it at the end of the routine. I completely disagree with that one. If you're going to fall on your ass, the best place to do it is at the beginning. You still have a chance at that point to make everyone forget you fell. When you fall at the end, it's the last thing you've done. You're dumb, Nigel.

Oh Shit. Mary's off her meds today. She's already screeching and shouting for Tyce to give her an amen. My ears may not survive the evening. She thinks everyone needed a little disco pick-me-up, and they sure picked her up, yes they did. She thought all the lifts were tremendous, and says that usually a ballet dancer would be really stiff doing a disco, but Melissa was fabulous.

Tyce thinks that was frigging great. He adores Melissa. He thinks Ade was fantastic. And then says something about disco from the '70's not being store bought. Wha?

SYTYCD20090708e

Someone's been spending time with Toni Basil, I think.

Next up are Kayla and Kupono, dancing contemporary with Mia. REALLY? That random hat sure does like this couple, doesn't it? Mia tells us that this piece is about addiction. Mia thinks that everyone has had or will have an experience with wanting something that's not good for you. Kupono is the addiction; Kayla is trying to break free from him. I understand what that's like as I've struggled with my own addiction.

SYTYCD20090708f

I will never break free from it!

Nor do I want to! Mia wants Kupono to have a sinister smirk on his face because he knows she'll be back. He says this piece is hitting really close to home for him because a really good friend of his had an addiction to drugs that nearly destroyed his family. He's having a hard time being the drug or addiction. Awwww. He made me get all teary eyed.

Lizbot:

Oh lord, you had me cracking up so much with this recap. Especially the reference to the "foxes" dance -- yeah, I had forgotten about that hot mess until you brought it up, lol

My one point of disagreement is that I thought it was a weak show this weak. Last week's show was stellar, and I was expecting so much more as follow up. The only two who really knocked it out of the park were Brandon and Janette. Although I must say, Jeanine and Philip (mostly PHilip) surprised me with how well the jive went. It wasn't the best jive ever, but it was certainly better than I expected of them.

I have to say this about Ade and Melissa. On the positive side, Ade has grown on me (despite the afropik and all). I think he's a very strong dancer that hasn't quite gotten his due on the show yet. I'm not getting all the Melissa adulation though. I thought her disco was absolutely horrible. Not only did she fall, but she seemed sloppy and behind the beat for most of it and had what looked to me like a frightened look on her face throughout. I don't know why the judges never call her on things like that when they're so ready to pounce on others for the same thing. And a friend of mine pointed out that Melissa has mostly gotten slow dances throughout the competition to date that have probably disguised some of her weakness as a dancer. Again, I'm not going to hate on her, I'm glad other people enjoy her, but I'm disappointed -- I really thought at the beginning that she was going to be one of my favourite girls on the show.

But I'm happy to now have 2 favourite girls -- Jeanine and Janette have been blowing me away the past couple of weeks! Kayla has now fallen to 3rd for me. The other three girls are distant 4th, 5th, and 6ths.

I hope now that they're getting new partners, Jason will be able to blossom, because I think he's really really skilled.

Oh, and last thing: I share your disgust with the broadway on this show. Tyce needs to stick to jazz (and not talking). Joey needs to just go away!

JohnnyLegs:

Great recap, as always! I fast-forwarded through everything Tyce said this week, and I found it really beneficial. I recommend it.

I agree with you about Brandon and Janette. I've loved every dance they've done this season, but this last Wade Robson piece just blew me away! From the first second to the last, it was amazing. Brandon's great, of course, but I think Janette really takes it to the next level. She is such a great performer; she commits to every single move and makes it believable.

As for Randi and Evan, I like them - who doesn't like Evan? But I think they really resonate with the voting public because they don't look like dancers; they look like normal people. You look at Ade or Kayla, and you think that they were born dancing. But Evan and Randi look right out of Home Depot, and it makes it seem like they've worked harder to get where they are. That's why they can lay such tremendous stink-bombs as their two dances this week and still avoid the bottom three.

cattyfan:

I have no idea what your recap says after page one. I can't seem to get past that picture of Hugh...

Allison:

I pretty much agree with the entire recap this week. I will say this: it seems to me that the judges are pushing much harder for the women than the men. And there may be three very strong women (Jeannine, Janette, Kayla) versus two very strong men (Brandon, maybe Ade? although Kupono was awesome in the contemp), but it still seems there is inordinate praise heaped on the females. Not that I'm opposed to a girl winning (I loved Joshua last year, but I thought Katee was robbed--of course, I loved Sabra, but I thought Danny was robbed)...I just think the judges are pushing it a bit hard.

natpatben:

Best line of the recap: Mwua ha ha ha.....our vanillaization of hip hop is almost complete!

Love the video of Anya and Danny... as well as every video of Danny you've ever posted. ::sigh:: I love his dancing. I wish I could go back and watch every season 3 performance (without judges comments).

lol @ JohnnyLegs's Home Depot comment. Those two do look quite pedestrian.

Also, it does seem QUITE strange that Philip pulled two unpopular genres in the same night.

Lastly, I agree that Melissa's disco was weak. There was a lack of fluidity in parts that I noticed, but the judges didn't comment on them.

blazergirl:

I agree that Phillip and Jeanine's Russian dance was a train wreck, but I don't blame it on the dance. Remember in the finals last year when Twitch and Joshua did a Russian number? They were fantastic! I bet if Brandon and Janette did it, it would have been quite a bit better. I adore those two and this week cemented it. Long live Wade Robson!

georgiababe:

This week, Kupono again reminded me of Mark. He reminded me of him in the audition - the hair, the quirkiness, the musicality and that fact that they're both from Hawaii and they seem to share a penchant for low-cut, V-neck t-shirts.

I agree with you regarding Kupono's technique - I definitely think that Brandon, Ade and others can dance circles around him. Again, I also agree with you regarding the ability to morph into a character.

Last season, after Gev's elmination, I felt like Mark (whom I LOVED) had the weakest technique in his own style. What I mean is that Mark was better than Twitch in contemporary, but Twitch was stronger in his own genre than Mark was in his. However, I felt like Mark could get into a routine better than any of the others, with the exception of possibly Joshua.

fire@will:

What an outstanding recap - ya done good, kid!

You have a way of saying things that make me think "yeah - that's what I thought" even though I could not have articulated it so well.

Thanks!

georgiababe:

And so that is why Kupono reminded me of Mark this week, is he has that same ability.

Sorry for all the rambling. I'm on codeine cough syrup and it makes me a bit loopy at times.

I have no idea who I want to win this season - I thought it would be easier when it got to the top 10, but nada. I think the one who deserves it most is probably Janette - she hasn't had a slip up at all, really and I find her personality very cute.

We'll see! Great recap as usual PottyMouth, you had me laughing out loud!

hm21:

Okay, I have to say a couple things.

1) Thought Cat was rocking that look.

2) Absolutely HATED Caitlin and Jason's "Foxtrot". It just looked like Jason was doing shoulder shrugs while strutting across the stage. And Caitlin was looking forward to wearing a sparkly dress.....bad news girl, the dress was uug-ly. And the judges PRAISED them...what are they on because I need to get some of that stuff to help soften the blow of Mary's screams (that English Muffin comment was hilarious though).

3) Oh my gosh. I loved it where you showed the pic of Janette talking Spanish with the choreographer and the caption of Brandon wondering if they thought he was hot. I was trying sooo hard not to start bursting out laughing, I was shaking and sweating like I had hypothermia. Oh my gosh. That's making me chuckle just thinking about it.

4) Thought Tyce's "Squeezing the Orange" comment to be hil-arious!! I just said "That's Lil' C all over again". However, I do have to say that he did kind of give tips and criticism instead of just heaping praise (the stressed word being kind of).

5) Thought Kayla and Kupono's contemporary routine was great. I still don't like Kayla though. She just seems too arrogant in a way. Like because everyone says she's soo good and everything means she deserves everything and should just win the whole thing today. And also when she said she wanted to be a model. Ewww. I mean, didn't her grandparents struggle to pay for her dance, but yet they have money to pay for modeling. What?!

6) And finally ending my ranting, with saying that Brandon and Janette blew it out of the park while Randi and Evan and Jeanine and Phillip only bunted it for me.

ohhhyeah:

Some great dances this show, and finally two dances per couple. It’s surprising how the dancers struggle (or claim to struggle) so horribly in rehearsal to learn one routine per week, but then pick up and learn two routines in a week with no drop off in performance. Good job overall, I thought.

It seems like every week at least one of the dancers gives us the line, “This routine could go either way, it could go really good or it could go really bad.” That’s true of EVERY routine, don’t they realize that? One thing I would like to see: if each couple is dancing two routines per week, the show should be extended to two and a half hours so they could include more behind-the-scenes footage from the contestants. I want to know what their favorite cereal is.

Would it be considered rude for a judge to not give a standing ovation if the other two judges are already standing? Especially if the sitting judge thought there was nothing special about a routine? Or would the wish to be asked back to the judging panel in the future override any such expressions of individuality and render the whole point moot?

I’m glad that Melissa and Ade finally got to showcase a different set of dance skills. They were stellar in the disco routine (at least I thought, but I don’t hate disco as much as the rest of the planet). It’s a good thing they didn’t dance the waltz first, or I might have been completely over them at that point.

As bad as the Russian folk dance was, who really knows what it should have looked like since Phillip was dancing it. The routine had everything – Phillip’s cheesy smile, his bad acting, and his customary inability to adapt to a different style of dance. The parts Jeanine danced by herself I actually enjoyed. Nigel was wrong to blame the choreographers.

When Jeanine gets another partner she is going to be unbelievable. Right now my money is on her to win it all. In her favor, she’s talented, she’s an underdog and she hasn’t been in the spotlight enough to engender much, if any, ill will. She and Ade will probably be standing side by side when the last envelope to determine the winner is opened.

Final thought on the Wade Robson routine. Performed by lesser talents that routine could have been a disaster. That is called performance - please take note Jason and Caitlin. And Jeanine, since my money’s on you, you might want to “accidentally” take out one of Janette’s kneecaps, because she could give you trouble at the end.

tv freak:

ohhhyeah-I too love Jeanine, but there's no way she can win this competition. She doesn't have enough of a fan base. I wouldn't be suprised if she left at top 8 (after Kayla, of course).

I think it is apparent that the finalists will include Brandon, Janette, and Evan. I predict Melissa will round out the finalists. It is also obvious, imo, that Brandon will lose.

tv freak:

I meant to say that Brandon would win.

Chibby:

I'm still not a big fan of Brandon. I'm pretty certain that had he not have Jeanette, he'd either be reallly boring or annoying. I'm hoping a girl will win this season since they seem to be more talented than the guys. I've been rooting for Melissa but I doubt she'll win. I'd settle for a Jeanette win.
Wish they would do an all star one. Wouldn't that be great? Danny come back!

here4beer:

So glad you included that Danny and Anya clip... Danny has always been the gold standard for me on this show, and no one else really touches his ability IMO. Can you believe that Anya, as awesome as she is/ was, didn't even make the top 10 that season? That season was absolutely stacked.

I loooooooooooved Wade's dance, too. It was the only one that really pulled me in this week. But I always love him (I even liked the foxes dance!). I also loved your assessment of Tabolean. Vanillazation, indeed. BRING BACK SHANE SPARKS, BITCHES!!

Oh, and Tyce is such a spaz.

squeedunk:

Tonight was a strong night, to be sure. I want to like Caitlin and Jason, I really do, but they're like the cusp of mediocrity in my opinion. Melissa and Ade are strong, but they don't seem to have as much of a following as they need to secure them a place in the top of the top. Brandon and Janette have quickly become my favorite couple and I can't remember a dance of theirs that I haven't enjoyed. Jeanine is most certainly a dark horse and will greatly benefit, I think, from a switch of partners.

I have to disagree with you though, about Randi and Evan's hip hop dance. I absolutely adore these two, so I'm biased, but I felt that the choreographers did the best that they could to create a decent routine for two...well, white people. Additionally, although it was certainly not the best hiphop I've ever seen, it was a great performance by the two of them. And So You Think You Can Dance is largely a performance competition as we already know that all of the contestants have fantastic technique. (well, mostly.) These two are cute as a button together, but I'm worried about them being spilt up. Can you picture petite Randi with, I don't know, Kupono?

Additionally, PottyMouth, I think it would be interesting to hear your take on how the contestants will fare without their old partners...better or worse?

ohhhyeah:

“I too love Jeanine, but there's no way she can win this competition. She doesn't have enough of a fan base. I wouldn't be suprised if she left at top 8 (after Kayla, of course).”

tv freak – If I’m proven correct I may have to drag this quote out again in the future because I’m not the type of person who can resist saying “I told you so.” If, on the other hand, it turns out I am wrong, I’ll never bring the subject up again. That’s just the way I roll ;D

Yanksfan24:

I LOVED the Addiction dance. I seriously got chills. I showed my fiance the hair standing up on my arms. Great job to both of them. I also loved WAde Robson's routine, (but who doesn't) I rewound my DVR several times to watch. I kind of thought Jeanine and Phillip got the shaft with those "picks" but it just proves that Phillip shouldn't be in the competition any longer. (Let's just pretend we haven't seen the results show yet)

PS: PottyMouth, keep up the great work. Love the recaps!

waffleboy09:

Pottymouth, I loved this recap, especially "Укол. Как о водочке? Впихните бутылку к вверх вашего ишака" and double especially when I ran it through a translator. Learning is always extra awesome when there is swearing involved. Awesome post, please keep them coming

PottyMouth:

Lizbot: How could you forget the foxes dance?!? I think you didn’t forget – your mind was protecting you from a traumatic experience!

JohnnyLegs: The Home Depot comment made me snort/laugh in a very unladylike fashion!

cattyfan: I hope you were able to move on from page one….there was at least one more sight to see! ;)

Allison: I agree that they seem to really want a girl to win this year. Makes sense given that there’s only been one female winner so far (who should NOT have won). I think they’ll be pimping them hard in the upcoming weeks.

natpatben: I also love watching Danny dance. I’m still not over the fact that he didn’t win season 3. While I may not have agreed with other seasons’ winners, his is the one I can’t seem to let go of. FIX!!

blazergirl: I think you’re right, that with a better couple it would have been better performed, but I still think it would have drawn criticism as not being tough enough.

georgiababe: I agree with you about Mark (and I too loved him) – I think that’s why Twitch moved on over Mark – he blew people away in his own style, more so than Mark did.

fire@will: Awww, shucks….thanks!

georgiababe: I’m not feeling very well…..can you spare some of that cough syrup? ;) I’m holding off on Janette – I think she’s done great, but there’s just something about her that makes me think she’s going to have major attitude/backtalk whenever she finally gets some tough critique. I hope I’m wrong.

hm21: Tyce is working my nerves this season. At one point my sister and I were saying it looked like he was trying to go out of his way to say something negative, or “constructive” about every routine. I’d like him more if he didn’t try so hard.

ohhhyeah: I would love to see Jeanine in contention for the win – I think she’s amazing. I can’t wait to see what she does with a better partner!

tv freak: I don’t know about Brandon winning – I think he has the talent, but I think they are going to be bucking hard for a girl to win.

Chibby: Oh my gosh – I would love that! But god only knows who Nigel would pick as all-stars – you know he’d bring that idiot Lauren back – eeeeek!

here4beer: Season 3 was by far for me the best. And I am totally with you on Danny – there have been other really great dancers on this show, but none of them even touch Danny as far as I’m concerned.

squeedunk: We will have to agree to disagree about the hip hop number. :P I think it’ll be interesting seeing the partners split. It’s really all going to depend on WHO they get paired with – I think the people with the most to “lose” are Brandon and Janette since they’ve been SO strong together.

ohhhyeah: Hee! I myself can never resist the urge to point out to friends when I am right. But I seem to become forgetful when they are right. But that never happens because I am always right. :P

Yanksfan24: Those were my two favorite numbers of this season so far. Mia may be an asshole, but the woman can put together some powerful dances when she wants to.

waffleboy09: I love learning how to swear in foreign languages too! BTW, I’ve been stalking Moviegasm waiting for your next post!

You guys are awesome – thanks for all the great comments, and for reading of course!

SWAK, PottyMouth
