This is it Gasmi. Tonight we find out who has made the all important top ten, thus securing a place for themselves on the tour. It's also Nigel's birthday, and he is full of love and good will for everyone. Well, everyone who can make him buttloads of money. THIS. Is So You Think You Can Dance (dance....dance)!

♫ It's my birthday; I'll change the rules if I want to. Change if I want to. Change if I want tooooo,...........I will do anything I want to do-oooooo ♪ ♫
This week's opening number is performed to "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes. I like it. The dancers are like little hip hop toy soldiers. I'm trying to figure out who choreographed it, and then, this move happens.....

Tabitha and Napoleon. Gotta be. Which is somewhat surprising to me since this is a little more hard hitting than I'm used to seeing from them.

Nice way to start the show. As Cat makes her way onto the stage, she gets a little salute from each dancer. I am immediately distracted by what she is wearing. Her hair looks gorgeous, all straight and shiny, but her dress is a little too Walk Like An Egyptian for me.

Ay oh, way oh, ay oh way oh.......
Cat reminds us that this is the last time the cuts will be up to the judges. After tonight, it's all about the phone voting. Tyce is back tonight, of course, and Cat calls him snapalicious. Well, I guess that's better than Brooklyn brownie.
Cat wants us all to put our hands together because it's Nigel's 60th birthday today. He tells us, "No botox!" No Shit. Then he says that he went to get some, but Mary had gotten there first. Mary laughs it off, but I bet she kicks his ass later. And I bet he likes it.
Cat also brings up the rumors of the Michael Jackson tribute show that's supposed to be happening, and asks Nigel what's going on with it. Well, it seems that they had some bad news yesterday. He first explains what they had wanted to do, which was a show where all the music would be Michael's. They had the choreographers on board, everyone was really excited, and when they put the music through to Sony for clearance, they were told no.

So e-mail Sony and tell them what dip shits you think they are. Not me! It's not my fault.
I have to say; whoever said no to it is a moron. They probably would have sold even more music. It seems like a really stupid move to me. I think it would have been really interesting to see how they incorporated the music into the ballroom routines, and to see what songs each of the choreographers picked. But such is life.
Moving along to Mary, Cat asks her how it feels to know that this is the last week the judges will decide who goes home. She has mixed emotions. She's happy that this is one of the few competition shows that the judges actually have a say. WHAT? Is she an idiot or what? There are plenty of shows where the whole thing is decided by judges.

So glad to see you took your stupid pills tonight.
She goes on to say that it hasn't been easy week in and week out to make those decisions, and if you haven't been happy with the results, well it'll be your turn soon enough. Hope you get it right.
Now Cat moves on to Tyce and almost immediately I want to kill him. She talks about how difficult this is for the dancers, learning two routines, all the bruises and cuts they get, how difficult does he think it is? He says it's tough, but they didn't sign up for a vacation at club med. This is So You Think You Can Dance (dance.....dance). The greatest, truest competition.

Please someone stuff a sock in his mouth
Too late. He's not stopping. "They gotta be like magicians, flip the hat, flip the switch, get into character and do it in like one second. And they've gotta be warriors. That's just the way it is, that's the truth. That's it. That's it. Nothing else." Ugh. He makes me want to puke.
Enough of this, let's get to who is safe and who is not. First two couples up are Jason and Caitlin, and Brandon and Janette.

Gee.....I wonder who will be in the bottom three from this grouping. Can you imagine being backstage and finding out that you're grouped with Brandon and Janette this week? Obviously Jason and Caitlin are in the bottom.

Okay, so this is the first season I have watched this show, so I am not really sure what happens next...Next week the "random" hat that is in no way rigged determines their partners? Is anyone else seeing Evan (who the judges seem to be gunning for next)getting paired with Melissa (I really don't see him being able to lift her)?

i thought it was kinda mean how nigel called caitlin out first. the way he made it seem was that they were going to say which 2 people were safe, so i expected caitlin to be safe when he called her out. and did anyone else notice how some people LAUGHED when they said caitlin was leaving? that was effed up

Uhh...I have to agree that the guest "singer" was HORRIBLE. Worse than we've had so far. Worse than listening to Mary screaming. Worse than hearing Tyce ramble on and on (apparently he doesn't know how to sit straight and not with one elbow on the table and his body turned sideways). You're not going to catch cootys Tyce!! Also, the backup dancers, if you can even call them that, sucked. There was no synchronization, with each other or the music. Looking forward to next week to see how the dancers "pair up". Randomly of course because that's how we roll. ;)

"So I'm wondering if the Russian folk dancers were supposed to perform and then decided to tell Nigel to stick it up his ass after he insulted them last night. I mean, they're Russian folk dancers, it's not like it's going to hurt their career if they blow off performing on this show. Folk in Russia still love them, I'm sure." - Too funny PottyMouth!
Ade was incredible in his solo - all the others were blah. I knew Nigel would secure a place for Philip - he's good at popping and would pull in the crowds.
Evan is the next to go - sorry (not sexy, not tall, not believable - all those silly faces).

I'm mad that the top 10 has zero diversity. I bet they're mad that they cut Max all those weeks ago, because he didn't really deserve to go and he would have provided a welcome change to all the contemporary dancers. They don't realize their weekly tongue bath of Kayla is what's causing her to be in the bottom- not the "random" choice of her partner. Bet she's gone next week unless she "randomly" pulls a Wade routine.
So far I'm really loving Janette, but I'm nervous to see how she does without Brandon.

I think I must have terrible musical taste. I (sheepishly) have to admit that I kind of liked Kelly Rowland. Of course, I am deaf in one ear--maybe that explains it!

OMG, I heart your recaps so much. :)
I'm with you on the Janette love - I think she's awesome.
As for the "swing dancer" comment, I took Nigel's commentary totally differently - not that they're bringing dancers to perform in the swing style, but that they're going to pick up a "swing shift" to give the other dancers a rest -- like Hok. He didn't make the top 10, but they took him anyway for the Hummingbird routine. He would have been considered a "swing dancer."
Anyway. Fabulous recaps again. Thanks for the giggles every week. Keep it up!!

PottyMouth: You rock. I bet you were right about the Russian dancers telling Nigel to sod off. I would have.
It was terribly disrespectful of him to say what he did the other night. Russian folk isn't really a comparable dance to, say, jazz or contemporary. It's folk dancing. It's like throwing in Irish step-dancing and expecting these guys to whirl around like Michael Flatly. Folk sort of needs to have someone who loves and embodies the spirit of the dance, otherwise, it is just steps to bad Disney music.
here4beer: Amen! I was so ticked when they cut Max, especially after Philip butchered his tango (even if he wasn't in the bottom three, I've never seen anything so horrible on this show before) and Kupono rubbed himself to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." They can go over how lame pairs dancers are in solos, but I would rather have sat through Max's Footloose dancing than Kupono's ukulele rubdown. Ugh.

I really hope that Nigel's spiel about the MJ tribute changes sony/the estate's mind. I think that would be so neat.
Glad I wasn't the only one who realized Phillip was gone after the swing dancer speech (which I agree with jennm about the definition). I thought he was a lil robbed, but I'm a sucker for his solos. I felt Jason should have gone home.
Was I the only one who thought Phillip's solo > Ade's solo?
finally, my order of eliminations prediction:
Kayla and Jason
Jeanine (=() and Kupono
Randi and Ade
Finals:
1st Brandon
2nd Evan (blech)
3rd Janette
4th Melissa

My jaw dropped when Nigel flat-out admitted that the results night is complete b.s. I guess I always knew that's how things work, but I thought it was pretty ballsy for him to come out and say it. He has so little respect for his audience that he's willing to completely rig the results and then TELL us about it.
I can't imagine how hard it was for the bottom 6 to dance their solos after hearing that, which makes me respect Ade all the more, because he was incredible.
I really, really want to stop watching this show--it is so corny and stupid, and at this point the glorious moments are few and far between. For every amazing routine or awesome performance from "the world of dance" you've got a crappy waltz to sit through, endless asinine judges' comments (could Nigel PLEASE stop commenting on costumes and hair, as if the dancers have anything to do with either?), and irritating musical guests/clips from next season.
I love watching people dance so I guess I'll keep taping it and fast forward through everything except the routines. That's the only way I'll be able to tolerate this crap...you are a much braver person than I am to sit through everything and turn it into an entertaining recap, so thank you.

I wasn't really that shocked about what Nigel said and I guess I'm the only one.
Blanketessa - The show isn't rigged - at least, not who goes home. Nigel and the other judges don't decide who the bottom 3 couples are, they just decide who goes home of those 6 dancers - which obviously, we know about.
I knew that the judges would need more than 10 minutes to decide who goes home - I mean, look at the deliberation over who to put in the top 20 - and I knew that as a producer, Nigel would know the results as soon as they were ready for release. It didn't really surprise me that he would say that, I already figured it was true.
And most of the time, the solos suck anyways. The best solo I have ever seen on this show was Shauna Noland's in season 3, can't recall the week. It is the only solo that has really wowed me that I still remember.

First things first:
Umm...Pottymouth? Only 1 picture of Hugh this recap? What's up with that!! lol
I'll admit to being slightly disappointed...
About Nigel's comments, I too was not surprised that that's what they do, but I was surprised that he admitted that that's what they do. I was thinking that maybe he was "celebrating" his birthday prior to the show (you know...with the aid of substances and all...)
Ade has officially won me over. He's not my favourite (yet) but he definitely secured his spot in the top 10 with that kickass solo. He was the only one out of the whole group to really act like he was fighting for the win.
Melissa is still underwhelming for me. I was much more impressed with the ballerina they had on the show last year (Raven I think, although she got kicked out the first week along with her partner).
I agree that Max was robbed! If we still had him on the show, there would be a lot more diversity. And based on his (albeit limited) track record I think he deserved to stay more than Kupono, but ah well. They did the same thing to Stanislav season 2. I was much more upset that time around.
I'm so glad that Jason got to stay. I think he's a fabulous dancer and hopefully a new partner (I"m hoping for Janette) will bring out some of the spark I saw in him during the auditions.
I hope Evan can last at least one more week. I'd love to see him partnered with Jeanette, because I think she can bring something more substantive out of him as well.
My official faves right now are Jeanine, Janette, Ade, Brandon, and Jason. Evan and Kayla might make their way back into my faves list depending on how they perform this week.
I was not sad to see Caitlin go (but I hope her sister makes season 6, she seemed more interesting) and it was definitely Philip's time to go. But the "bring the hiphopper who can't dance any other styles on tour" trend started in season 3 with Hok and continued in season 4 with Comfort (although under slightly different conditions). I'm guessing it's going to be a tradition for the tour for a while. I wonder who the male alternate is going to be though. Probably Vitolio? If so, I'm happy for him.

messystation: Yep, the Hogwart’s sorting hat puts the dancers into their new houses, I mean, pairs.
preppyboy: I completely agree – he was all business and it seemed both abrupt and unnecessarily harsh. That’s why he’s a dickwad.
hm21: Yeah, I don’t think Kelly’s going to boost her album sales based on that performance. Those dancers were so incredibly lame – it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
tommy girl: Evan could stick around over Jason – I think he’s got more of a fan base than Jason does. I’ll be curious to see how it all plays out with the new partners – he could look incredibly awkward with one of the taller girls.
here4beer: Yeah, this year that feels sooooo stacked with contemporary dancers – can’t wait to see angsty solo after angsty solo after angsty solo all performed to Lifehouse. I REALLY hope that Evan can stick around for a while for that reason alone.
Allison: I have no words.
jennm926: We have the same definition of swing dancer – I wasn’t saying that they would dance in the swing style, but that the swing dancers needed to be good at ALL the styles. That’s why Phillip isn’t good swing dancer material.
jennaboa: Yeah, Nigel pissed me off big time with what a shit head he was to the Russians – it was so unnecessary. I really do hope they told him where to go.
tv freak: I think it was Phillip’s time, but I wouldn’t have cried any tears if Jason had left instead. I myself am hoping that Jeanine can make it to at LEAST the top four. That girl kicks ass.
blanketessa: Believe me, I understand the urge to fast forward through the judges’ comments – they are so full of crap half the time. There are times they make me want to rip my face off.
georgiababe: I wasn’t shocked by the admission, just the fact that he came out and said it. Although some of those decisions probably take about thirty seconds. I’ll have to go back and watch Shauna’s solo – I don’t remember it. For me, Danny’s solos were always amazing.
Lizbot: Sorry to disappoint, but I thought the drool factor of that picture was the equivalent of three or four pictures. ;P I do disagree about Hok – he wasn’t fabulous in other styles, but he managed far better than Phillip did. Unless my memory is just making him better than he was which is entirely possible.
I’m nervous for our top ten and who they’ll be paired with – Evan in particular worries me because he’s so damn short. I’m hoping for an incredible, strong showing from these guys. And a third judge that doesn’t make me want to stick an ice pick in my ear.
SWAK, PottyMouth

yea remember that routine when Hok was a bird... that was awesome.
I hope Jeanette gets paired with Ade. It would be like Katee when she was with Josh last season. Dream Team!

Here are my week's random thoughts. Re: Cat -- Agreement on the dress; and am I the only one that hates colored eyeshadow? Even if, or perhaps because, it matches the outfit? Hate it.
Caitlin's skirt. She deserved outster for that alone. Having said that, however, I like her more as a dancer than Randi. I don't get Randi's appeal at all.
I seriously couldn't tell if they were being serious about Teddy. He looked dreadful (in clothing and dancing).
I was laughing out loud during Melissa's solo. It was to a "modern" (scare quotes) piece of music that featured what sounded like fart noises in it.
re: Rowland. There were kids watching with me and they asked "who's that?" "She used to be in Destiny's Child." "Who?" "With Beyonce." [confused look] "Shouldaputtaringonit girl." "Oh." [pause] "Who is this again?" At that point I hit the 30-sec button til she was gone. Aaaaand scene.
I hate these musical guests, too. I was trying to remember what the worst has been. I think it was Fergie. Anybody out there with a good memory of the awful musical numbers?
Happy Birthday, English Muffin!
btw I'm not that thrilled about having two seasons of this show in one year. Just sayin'.
Thanks for everything, PottyM

@memememe:
Worst musical number ever was Nicole Scherzinger. Hands down, no question. Not only was the song awful, she can't sing-- AND she was doing all this horrendous stripper dancing/ gyrating. It was really, really horrible.
(Although Fergie was pretty awful, too. LOL)

cansnuts: THAT would be awesome! I'd love to see them paired together!
memememe & here4beer: I immediately scour my brain with brillo after every "musical" performance. I think I can count on one hand the number of them that I actually remember - and they're all from this season!!

here4beer, I'd forgotten about her! Oh man you're so right, it was AWFUL.
I can't remember the whole thing. I tried to see it again, but it seems to have been scrubbed from the Internetz. Oh well. It's probably for the best, really. It would give me nightmares.
