So You Think You Can Dance: Filler, Filler Everywhere. Only One NEW Dance To See

I hope you're hungry tonight Gasmi because we have a helluva lotta filler to chew through. I'm thinking that the time allotted for either actual dancing and/or finding out the results from last night's voting tallies up to a grand total of about five minutes. Not that it's a shocker, or different from any other week; it's just annoying at times.

Cat reminds us that this time the power was all in our hands. Our votes have decided who will be staying and who will be going.......THIS. Is So You Think You Can Dance (dance.....dance)!

SYTYCD20090716a

She looks like she's wrapped herself in foil gift wrap tonight.

The evening starts with a group number. This is the ONLY new dance number you will see tonight, so it's a damned good thing it's FANTABULOUS!

SYTYCD20090716b

SYTYCD20090716c

SYTYCD20090716d

SYTYCD20090716e

I loved this dance SO much. Of course it was a Wade Robson piece, and this time his wife Amanda gets credit as a choreographer too. Have I told you all how much I love Wade? That was a rhetorical question.

Cat's been up to her whoring ways again before the show. This time she's forgotten to put her pants back on before coming out on stage.

SYTYCD20090716f

I will see you in my dressing room later. Bring my pants with you.

Cat tells us she has some exciting news. The Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and So You Think You Can Dance (dance.....dance) has received four,

SYTYCD20090716g

Count them, FOUR

Nominations! And the nominees are........

SYTYCD20090716h

Yay Dmitry! Personally I'm hoping that Bleeding Love wins because I love that dance. Of course the only problem with a Tabitha and Napoleon win is that it would legitimize their sanitization of hip hop. But I definitely don't want Mia to win even though I loved that number; she's way too full of herself as it is already. Tyce? No thank you. I'm happy that Dmitry got nominated, but Bleeding Love was better than his number. Damn! I've been seduced by the scent of vanilla hip hop!

Cat also gives a shout out to the makeup department for their nomination. Give it up for Amy Strozzi! Also, since Cat didn't mention them....Heather Cummings, Tifanie White, and Marie DelPrete; also listed on the nomination as part of the make up team.

But it's time to get serious now. Cat reminds us that we're going from ten to eight dancers tonight, and we are the ones who have decided where the axe is going to fall. Listen. Cat. Please stop pointing your finger at us. Not all of us vote. I don't. Do you?

SYTYCD20090716i

You can't be serious

It was a general question, for everyone. Not everything is about you, Hugh!

SYTYCD20090716j

Seriously.

Of course Debbie Allen is back again tonight, along with Mary and.......well, just Mary. Nigel is absent tonight. Cat tells us he's getting an honorary Doctorate of the Arts from the University of Bedfordshire in England. It must be nice to be famous; you can get a degree without ever having to take any classes.

So that means it's ladies night tonight. Oh, what a night

SYTYCD20090716k

WOO! We don't have to hear about Nigel's boner once tonight!

Before we get to any results, Cat introduces a montage of what happened last night. For those of you with short memory spans....there was dancing. Girls danced. Guys danced. They danced together. They danced by themselves. Dance dance dance. Oh, and Evan is not African. The End.

Four minutes and twenty seconds later, I think it's time to start hearing some results. Wrong! First we need to take a commercial break.

SYTYCD20090716l

Tuesday!!

Back from the break, Cat has all five girls lined up on stage. You can always tell at least one person in the bottom and two people that are safe from the line up.

SYTYCD20090716m

Safe, Bottom, Safe, Dunno, Dunno

Cat's going to reveal the bottom two girls and then later they will dance a recycled solo. It can't change anything at this point; it just gives them a chance to show you why you didn't vote for them last night.

Janette's up first. Last night she was transformed from a librarian to a ho by the power of Ade's magical prick pick. Did the audience buy what she was selling? YUP. She is safe.

Randi's turn. She tried to disguise herself hoping to trick us into thinking it was actually Jeanine dancing a really crappy paso blow-bleh. Was the disguise successful? NO. She's the first girl in the bottom two.

SYTYCD20090716n

If I smile hard enough maybe I won't start to cry

Randi seems like a sweet girl, but really, was anyone surprised by this after that dog of a dance last night?

cattyfan:

I finally figured out why I’m not completely on the Jeanine train. She reminds me too much of Lauren Gottlieb. Same dark hair and same sawed-off little body that looks more gymnast than dancer.

And I know what bothered me about Melissa’s solo (besides her incorrectly positioned feet, which you pointed out in your previous recap.) She didn’t fully use her music. “Gabriel” by Lamb has some wonderful majestic swells in it, and the lyrics “I can fly”…yet, inexplicably, Melissa stayed rooted to the ground in those moments. If ever she should have thrown in a grande jete, that was it.

Kupono is wonderfully expressive, and would make a good actor…if he didn’t have that wussy voice. It was right that he went home. Although if his pants got any lower, his vote total may have gone up.

I agree with you that the remake of Fame will suffer…partly because the students in the first movie had an innocence about them. They were shocked by the porno sleaze….shocked by the pregnancy and abortion. And, sadly, there is very little that shocks today’s youth. Plus it looks like the producers have tried to up the “wow” factor, missing the point that the performances should be raw, not polished and sequined.

I hate The Black-Eyed Peas…but any song that throws in a random “Mazeltov” is okay by me.

I’ll be taping next Thursday so I can fast-forward through Tom Cruise’s Stepford wife.

aholic:

Pottymouth - I'm not a frequent commenter, but just wanted to say great job on the recaps and that I really look forward to them every week. It's a great mix of snark with some actual dance knowledge (of which I have none).

I wasn't crazy about Ade at first (stupid hair pick), but he has grown on me and I was about to be pissed if he went home before Kupono.

Lizbot:

Pottymouth, the show might have been full of filler, but this recap was not. honestly, not blowing smoke up your...(to quote Mary) I think this was one of your best. And you totally made up for the dearth of Hugh from last week's results recap. For that I think you and I double heart you!

And I heart Debbie Allen. Can't we keep her? I.e., replace Mary with her? Well, one of my friend's pointed out that would be nice, but Debbie actually is busy unlike Ms. Murphy *sigh*

I thought America so got it right this week, but it will be tough as nails from here on in. Jeanine is officially my fave now, male or female. I hope she'll be the last dancer standing, period. As for the order of eliminations, I really can't say. I think they're all pretty fabulous, although I probably like Melissa the least, but that's not saying she's a bad dancer.

Cattyfan: TAKE THAT BACK! (About Jeanine reminding you of lauren). I could NOT stand Lauren at all. She was my least favourite dancer on the show ever. Jeanine is miles beyond her in terms of personality and presence on the dance floor. I don't see the similarity at all. If anything, Janette reminds me more of Lauren (if I strain really hard and try not to lose my lunch) and even that is a stretch....

cattyfan:

Lizbot...I meant there's a strong physical resemblance. Their personalities (Jeanine and Lauren) are miles apart.

tommy girl:

Wow! Great recap Potty! Ade was fantastic as was Jason and Brandon. Even though I actually liked Kupono's outfits - he was the weakest. You are right - it's going to get harder from now on..

So funny about Evan in the "African Dance"... I thought they all were great - call it what you want, get that continent's dances into the competition, then we can differentiate between the different styles...

Evan is a cutie in his dance style and I am still confused how so many Americans are voting in for him... Gene Kelly? Most young people don't give a you know what about that kind of style. Really noticing the lack of hip hop etc. - too much contemporary. LOVE JANINE and ADE so much. xoxo

hm21:

I agree with Randi and Kupono going home this week. Another great recap PottyMouth!!

Can't wait till Tuesday for Hell's Kitchen!! The promos make is sound like "The most shocking Hell's Kitchen yet" and I'm actually serious. Like that guy who's trying to fight Gordan Ramsey. He's out of his mind....kind of like Mary sometimes....

ohhhyeah:

Careful PottyMouth. If you keep spoiling us like this we’ll start to expect too much from your recaps. Hilarious stuff! There are still quite a few weeks ‘til the end of the season, I just hope you’re not peaking too soon :D

I was surprised by two of the voter results; I was shocked that Ade was in the bottom two and mildly surprised (but glad) that Kayla was not. I didn’t start out a Kayla fan but have become one because of all the haters. Of the remaining girls I’d prefer Melissa to leave next, although I don’t really have anything against her, it’s just getting down to the wire. I wouldn’t be disappointed to see any of the other three girls stick around until the end because I like them all. I still think Jeanine is the best dancer though and should win.

For me Ade is the best male dancer left, then Brandon. Brandon has great technique, but I’m still not sold on his acting skills. He doesn’t emote well – to me everything looks put on and fake. Jason = same comments as for Brandon, but even worse acting skills. I’m not sure what to think of Evan. I might be in the minority, but I’ve liked him in most of his routines. A lot of the Randi/Evan dances that got panned I actually liked.

slumrville:

Another fantastic set of recaps, Potty! I'm in awe!

At first, I thought Jeanine was the beneficiary of the Chbeeb love fest going on, and didn't necessarily deserve it. But week 1, she impressed me with the hip hop, and she's been impressing me ever since. And this week.... MAJOR LOVE! That dance with Jason was incredible, and easily my favorite routine of the season. On par with Bleeding Love and the Table in my SYTYCD Hall of Fame. Jeanine is officially my favorite.

I've been pulling for Evan from the very beginning. I agree with ohhhyeah about loving all of his routines. They haven't all been great, but I think the judges have been unfairly harsh on him most of the time. I'd love to see him make it to the finale.

I'm really enjoying this season, made so much better by these recaps. Keep up the good work, and brava on the brilliant inclusing of Hugh every week!!! If he ever showed up on SYTYCD, I think my head would explode!!!!

chibby:

I've been skipping judges commentary knowing that PottyMouth will let me know if there are any relevant comments, so thank you! hehe

This might be the first time in a long time that I agree with which 2 got eliminated.I'm so glad.

as for Kayla, I don't mind her. I'm not rooting for her to win, but I've been noticing that every time all the dancers go up on the stage, while all the rest of the girls go up to the girl leaving, Kayla is always with the boys. I have a feeling she doesn't get along with any of the girls. Very curious.

For this week, I agree with everybody. Hope either Kayla or Melissa gets Hip Hop. And please have somebody else to HipHop. I'm so tired of the Vanilla duo.

welcometothepartypal:

I have already watched that opening number a few times, and more to come! i love the part where Melissa is "walks" over their backs, its so Crouching Tiger.
in other news, Brandon is a midget. i didnt realize until he stood next to Ade.
I thought the same thing about Fergie's boobs, i was like HELLO where did those come from? weird.

welcometothepartypal:

Also - when they get nominated for an Emmy for choreography, who are they up against? themselves?

tv freak:

Loved the recap.

I was pleasantly suprised by the results. Dialidol.com (who is proving to be unreliable at SYTYCD) listed Kayla and Jason as going home and Randi (!) and Evan as the top vote-getters.

My predictions for next week are Kayla or possibly Melissa. Kayla has been struggling with the personality factor, but Melissa has been near the bottom for 2 weeks now. For the guys, I think Jason could be out, unless he can live up to last week's performance, in which case it may be Ade out.

newcastlefan:

Great recap. I fell a little in love with Jeanine when she said "cue montage of lifts." But can't see why she finds Jason attractive. Those eyebrows are so distracting. I think Brandon= Will. Technically strong but personality of water.

PottyMouth:

cattyfan: On the subject of the Fame remake…..toning it down to a PG rating pisses me off royally. I completely agree with you about the innocence of those original characters, and that we definitely would lose some of that given the earlier worldliness of today’s teens, but I don’t think they’re even going to touch on some of the subjects that made the original work so well. I hope I’m wrong, but the rating makes me shudder to think of the bubble gum interpretation we’re going to get. :(

aholic: I’m so glad you enjoy the recaps – thanks so much for commenting and letting me know! Thank god Ade didn’t leave – I would not have been responsible for my actions!!

Lizbot: Thanks!! I am also routing for Jeanine and would love to see her win. I wish they’d go back to rotating judges the way they did the first season with only Nigel there all the time (not because I love him or anything, just because he’s not going anywhere). Remember when Mary used to actually choreograph for the show??

cattyfan & Lizbot: LOL! I was all ready to start hollering about how Jeanine is nothing like Lauren! Glad to see I was getting my knickers in a twist for nothing!

tommy girl: I think people like Evan because he’s so different from all the other contemporary stuff. I’d love to think that he’s opening up a whole new world of dance to some younger people, but that may be asking a little too much!! ;)

hm21: Between the guy trying to fight Ramsay and the lady getting in his face yelling it’s looking to be great frigging season! I can not wait!!

ohhhyeah: You guys are making me blush this week – thank you. I am in complete agreement about the top guy and girl. It worries me that Ade was in the bottom, though. I really would like to see him make it to the end. With Jeanine winning though.

slumrville: Yeah, the Travis dance was unbelievable. I really hope they have him back again. And again. And again. And honestly, if Hugh Jackman ever made an appearance on this show you might never get the recap!! I’d just sit staring at my computer screen unable to move past him. At least that’s what I imagine would happen. It’s not like I stare at pictures of him on my computer or anything.

chibby: I noticed that about Kayla also. This week I attributed it to the fact that Kupono was leaving and had been her partner, but I’ve seen that before with her too. Maybe she’s just one of those girls that gets along better with guys than other girls. It is interesting though.

welcometothepartypal: I know!! I never knew Fergie had such HUGE bazongas!! I loved that opening number SO much. I got sidetracked watching it a few times while I was writing this recap! On the Emmy nominations…….to a certain extent the show is competing against itself (although both DWTS and the Oscars each got nominated too), but each of the four dances were done by a different choreographer, so those guys are all up against each other.

tv freak: I dunno. I think at this point any one of them could go home with a bad routine or poor showing. I agree that probably Melissa and Kayla are starting out behind everyone else, but a kick ass routine could change that in a heartbeat (see Jason).

newcastlefan: I also loved when she said that they stole the show with Russian folk dance (“Fact.”) it made me LOL.

I’m wondering what Obama’s planned press conference is going to do to the telecast of the show this week. I hate when my programming is interrupted by news and stuff!!!

SWAK, PottyMouth

Lizbot:

lol Cattyfan

I get ya, but I don't see the resemblance. Of course, I'm so biased against Lauren and so biased for anyone that I remotely like that I probably couldn't see the resemblance even if it were there.

Not to be bitchy, but I never did get why guys found Lauren to be so "hot". Maybe her personality left a mark that only girls could see? Ok now that was bitch...mea culpa!

Baffled:

I think Ade is a great dancer but I have to say, to me, he comes across as having absolutely no personality. It's just "drop in a quarter, get a great dance". Then you're done until next time.

I don't think Kayla has much personality, either.

I get tired of the judges (Nigel...) criticizing the dancers for things that are beyond their control - choreography, costumes, hair and makeup. I would LOVE it if a dancer had the cojones to call him on it. "If this is such a huge issue with you then you should take this up with (hair, makeup, etc.) and quit dicking me over on camera". THAT person would get my vote!

-Dawn

fire@will:

Another pair of great recaps. Except for the parts I don't understand, I pretty much agree with you. "We" (although I don't vote) got it right this week, at least based on the week's performances.

PottyMouth:

Baffled aka Dawn ;): I think maybe he's just shy. That's the vibe I get anyway. For me, Kayla gives off a vibe like she's been home schooled her whole life. Totally agree on the critique of costumes, hair, etc. Such a load of crap.

fire@will: I'm so glad "we" got it right. The funny thing is that even though I don't vote, I'll bitch my little ass off when I don't agree with who gets sent home!!

And I saw Fox is NOT airing the press conference. Dance > Health Care. Remember that people.

SWAK, PottyMouth
