So You Think You Can Dance: Happy 100th Episode. Now You Two - Get The Hell Out

Tonight we celebrate episode 100. There will be laughter, there will be tears (or replays of tears), we will revisit great performances of the past, and revile brand new ones. Are You Ready?? THIS. Is So You Think You Can Dance (dance........dance)!

I have to say even though Cat looks hot hot hot tonight, her dress is a little disturbing. And ugly. But she sure does wear it well.

SYTYCD20090723a

I've always wanted an outfit that put two leopard eyes directly under my boobs.

The opening number this week is danced to "One" from A Chorus Line. I love that show so freaking much, I cannot even tell you. It's a must see for any dancer.

This interpretation on the number still involves mirrors, but they're all cracked. Okay. I'll go with it. I am immediately impressed that Tyce was able to put together such an awesome Broadway routine. Little did I know at the time that it was actually Mia who had done the choreography.

SYTYCD20090723b

SYTYCD20090723c

SYTYCD20090723d

You know, as much as I can't stand Mia, she is a fucking awesome choreographer. Yes, she has had some duds, but most of the time I really love the dances she creates. I just wish she wasn't such a mega bitch because it would be so nice to be able to like her. So the show is off to a great start.

Cat tells us the show is packed tonight. There will be three Emmy award winning routines, a look back at some of the show's "best moments", and an amazing performance from the "rather wonderful" Katie Holmes.

So you all know how I feel about this, we've been through it all already. But lest you think I have just been blinded by the sexiness of Mr. Hugh Jackman, let me assure you, the man can sing and dance. Don't believe me? Take a look.......

See? So yes, I say I wish they had gotten him to be on the show partly because I adore him and think he's the sexiest man on earth, but also because I think he would have been FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. Can anyone say that about Katie Holmes? Well, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Ellen is missing from the judges' table this evening; I'm guessing she's sitting home in a dark room drinking heavily after the trauma of sitting between Nigel and Mary. But that's just a guess.

Cat talks to Mia first, saying she's been here since the beginning, what has been the best thing for her? You know, other than trampling on the dreams of kids and making them cry. It's the little babies coming back to the nest, and showing what they have learned from the show, making the progression to choreographer, getting nominated for Emmys (Yay Dmitry!), and the professionalism that this show breeds.

Wait. She's not done. She couldn't be more proud of being mamma Mia on a show like this. Did she just really call herself a mamma?? Is she fucking delusional? Oh wait, maybe she is a mom, you know, one of those that WANT TO KILL HER KIDS!!! What the fuck?  Oh yeah, telling people she wants to stab them in the face, take a hammer to their shoulder blades, and her general love of cutting all make her mother of the year in my book.

SYTYCD20090723e

Christina! Bring me the axe.

Cat asks Mary what being a hundred means to her. Oh Lord, here we go with the botox thing again. Mary simply cannot keep herself from beating that dead horse into the ground over and over and over again. Yes, it was funny the first time, it hasn't been since then. Stop.

SYTYCD20090723f

Nigel thinks I'm funny

No he just tells you that so he can bang you. Mary says that this show means the world to her, and it's changed her life. She starts getting choked up saying it's been a lot of cackling laughter, a lot of tears. Some not so good dancing, and the most brilliant dancing she has ever seen in her entire life. I guess I should mention that there is a section of the audience with dancers from seasons past, shouldn't I?

There are more of them, but this is all you're getting

Chibby:

Oh I'm one that's pissed. I've ways liked her but was sort of ambivalent after awhile when she was with Brandon, but I was so annoyed! As much as Iike Melissa, I realized I'd have rather she go. Either way, these four girls were my top picks anyway. Don't care for any of the boys for some reason. Jeanine for the win for me.

cattyfan:

I wish they had expanded the show to two hours and featured more of the dancers from the past...I would have especially like to see the winners and runners-up from each season actually perform (and maybe even telling us what they’re doing now.)

The Hummingbird and The Flower was good, but Jaime and Hok no longer have the rawness and innocence they had during the first performance. It was probably lost from doing it on tour so many times.

I adore Wade Robson. Almost as much as Hugh Jackman. We seem to have the same taste in men. Stay away from my husband.

I loved the use of mirrors in the opening number. It made it look like there were far more dancers on the stage than there actually were.

Zaptoit credited the high ratings for this episode to Katie Holmes. What a joke. All she did was pose and lip-synch...and not even well. (Her mouth often closed before a note ended.) That was an absolute farce, and had no place on a show ostensibly about dance. Judy Garland is either rolling in her grave or laughing her ass off.

Jason and Jeanette should not have gone home yet...although I don't believe either would ultimately have won. They were both, however, better spoken and more gracious than any other contestants who have been voted out. I hope they find much success in their respective futures.

I don’t believe any of these contestants compare to the level we saw in season 2.

JohnnyLegs:

You put a bullet in the belly of a good woman, America.

I blame a lot of different people. First of all, I blame Tyce, who did nothing but poop on stage all season and then, suddenly, choreographs an emotional, well-crafted piece about breast cancer that saves the two people who should have gone home (suck it Ade fans).

I blame myself, for not voting a hundred-thousand times.

I blame Mia, for jinxing Janette.

I blame Evan, who I like as a Broadway dancer and as a person but who just sucks all the life out of latin dances.

What were people thinking?! And we lost Jason, too, who was really coming into his own. I never liked him with Caitlin, but these last two weeks he was fantastic! That Shane Sparks routine was AWESOME! I've watched it at least a dozen times (and yeah, who knew about Kayla?) And now he's gone. I blame Tyce mostly for this.

I agree with you, Pottymouth, Ade just isn't that great. I think he looks great, but that Cha-Cha was awful. And he's looked clumsy at times. I love his solos, but he should have gone home.

As for Katie Holmes, meh, what did you expect? She's not a dancer; she's involved in this charity thing Nigel is spearheading, and so she gets to tape her dance and have it shown. Worse crimes have been committed on this show.

I think they should have a show that's just a head-to-head choreography battle, Wade vs. Mia. Five pieces each, no talking from Mia. I'd watch that.

I want Jeanine to win but won't mind if Brandon does. That said, I can't fucking believe Janette is gone! It's a sad day here at La Casa Legs.

here4beer:

Janette was effing robbed. ROBBED!!!

I also think we all know now that Jason got screwed by his partnership in the top 20, and I'm actually really sad to see him go. He seemed to come into his own these last couple of weeks, and he is much better than I originally gave him credit for.

Regarding the flashback dances (besides the obvious WHERE'S DANNY???!)-- how awesome is Wade Robson? I love him so much, and I was super excited to see Ivan up there, too. In watching Ramalama and The Park Bench over again, though, I was struck by how much this show has grown over the years. Both of those pieces were actually pretty simplistic compared to what we've come to expect, which is consistent excellence and occassionally to be just plain awed. As much as I hate to agree with Nigel, this show really has brought art into our living rooms each week. He can still suck it, though.

PM, I have to thank you for getting these recaps up so quickly. You're the reason I make sure to stop at the 'gasm every weekend now. :)

Oh, and Melissa better get hip-hop next week or I'm calling this season a total sham.

georgiababe:

I agree with all of the comments so far, except that I didn't really care that Janette and Jason went home. I liked both of them, sure, but the people this season that I really love are Jeanine and Melissa and of those two, Jeanine should take it. I think I like Melissa so much because we are both ballerinas, but I definitely think that it's time for her to go.

"I've gone a bit sappy, I think, but as someone who danced for many many years and loves dance SOOO much, this show makes me so happy. Happy for those of us that are dancers, past and present, and even happier that it's opened up the world of dance to people that know nothing about it from a technical point of view, but love it and are moved by it. Dance has always been there for me in my life in times of happiness, sorrow, joy and pain. It's a timeless art form that keeps evolving but respects its past. I love dance and I love that this show allows all of us to share in that together."

Hear hear! Dance has been the exact same way for me. I've only been on hiatus from it for four years, due to various injuries (usually ankle and knee-related from all those damn jumps) and this show makes me so happy. It also makes me miss dance so much that today, I called a dance studio and registered in pointe, tap and lyrical - my 3 favorites. I'm a bit rusty, but I can't watch this show anymore and not dance, it's just killing me. I figure I'm young enough to jump back in.

georgiababe:

Also, regarding Katie Holmes: I was watching this with a friend of mine who doesn't watch SYTYCD regularly and when Cat said that Katie Holmes would be performing a song & dance, my friend turned to me and said "Since when is Katie Holmes a singer and a dancer?"

Clearly, she is NOT. The lip synching was just awful, the choreography sucked and it was just horrible overall.

A tribute to Judy Garland indeed. Might as well have just shit on her grave.

georgiababe:

Ugh, I should really think before I comment, because I have something to add. One more thing that really bugged me: I LOVED that Wade Robson was in Ramalama (and I fucking LOOOOOOVE Wade Robson) but who was missing?

The original dance was done with the top 10. There were 4 girls and of course, the one missing was Natalie.

But who was the missing guy? I actually can't remember the other top 10 guy. Was it Musa?

chibby:

I wonder though had Katie Holmes had a better choreographer? I don't think Nicole Kidman is a dancer but she did a convincing number in Moulin Rouge. Or Catherine Zeta-Jones or Renee Zelweger? She'll for sure not be up to par with the other dancers in the show, but I think it suffered because of the choreography. I feel bad for her actually. It was so painful to watch. I'm thinking she probably did a great job after all these idiots keep praising her. Or she probably knew it was terrible which is why she didn't even bother showing up.

rjfrankel:

I agree with almost everything you said... Except, while Jeanine is my favorite, I don't really care that much. The first four years, I always had favorites -- I loved both Nick and Melody, Danny was always #1, Will, Joshua, etc... This year: meh. I like Evan, for example, but he should have been gone 2 weeks ago. No one really stands out as a 'star' to me this year.

Does anyone know why the show seems to hate Nick -- he has never been back? And is Danny still around - he doesn't seem to be on the show and there isn't much on him on the internet? And what about Sabra, we never hear about her either?

And despite the Katie Holmes and Nigel 'you are my favorite' travesties, this recap was a delight -- especially with the double dosing of Hugh videos. :)

Memememe:

The park bench routine was much better in season 2.

Re: your comment about Mia being a bitch but a good choreographer: didn't you find that was kinda par for the course in the dance world? The best choreographers are especially good at ripping off other people's ideas and calling it inspiration, and being manipulative lying jerks in general.

I can answer one of your questions: Donyelle is still teaching once or twice a week at my daughter's studio. From what I understand, she's working in several places, doing videos, choreographing for people, I think she did a tour as a dancer.. Ciara maybe? I forget. She's very busy! And an awesome teacher. She's really tough, but that's what the kids like. They want to be hard-hitting with tight movement like she has.

Agree with you completely about Katie Holmes. Nigel needs to get over himself. If people didn't like it, he shouldn't try to guilt-trip them into keeping their opinion to themselves. And while we're on the subject of charity, I'd like to know why the Dizzy Feet Foundation wants so many kudos for offering $ for dance to the underprivileged. I send my kids to dance, have for years, and it costs a freaking arm and a leg. Ask Kayla's grandpa! Our family isn't wealthy. For Dizzy Feet and Tom Cruise's Co$ millions to care, I need to move to inner city Detroit or what? Also, I'm confused. Isn't she currently on Broadway singing and/or dancing? If so, is it going well? P.S. I really felt nothing "Judy Garland" about the piece.

I see Nigel's Twitter is arguing with people about whether it's "a" or "an" in front of historic. Putz.

They got rid of Janette. That's bad enough, but Janette AND Jason going before Evan? Tragic.

tv freak:

I see why people were upset over Janette's departure, but why Jason? Yes, he was getting better and better, but who would you have rather seen go home? Ade was definitely safe after the cancer piece. And if you were disappointed in Evan staying, you will be even more disappointed when he wins this season. I'd take Brandon over Jason any day.

wcsdancer:

Love your recaps!

Janette was more versatile than I originally expected, but she was never my favorite. She was almost Schwimmer-esque with the face pulling and camera mugging. Her solos were the weakest of any of the ballroom/partner style dancers ever on this show, imo. I'm rooting for Jeanine.

Right there with ya for the 'wtf' of Katie's "performance". What a waste of airtime.

I, too, would love a "where are they now" segment!

newcastlefan:

@ here4beer I hope Melissa gets crunk;)

I think it's being apparent that it's going to be between Jeanine and Brandon. Hopefully the one with personality *cough Jeanine* wins.

My HIV positive friend was saying I have a cause, where's my dance? I said season 6 Mia.

cattyfan:

This opens up a list of causes to which they can dedicate dances. For example, maybe they can do a group salute to dyslexia...with one dancer going the wrong direction during the whole thing.

blazergirl:

In regards to the question about Sabra and why we never hear anything about her, I have heard rumors that she had a falling out with the producers and either she won't come back on the show or they won't have her back. I don't know how much truth there is to the matter, but that's what I've heard.

I was also disappointed to not hear more from past clients. I was really hoping to hear from Joshua, or at least get him dancing in his style. I still love him!

messystation:

Do people even DO crunk anymore? This seems more of a dance fad and not a legitimate dance genre in my opinion (I am by no means an authority, which is why I ask). I have seen it mentioned before that they feature this, and it just boggles my mind.

brat:

Another great recap pottymouth.
georgiababe - the guy that was missing was Ryan - it was bugging me so much that I could not remember who the missing guys was that I had to look it up on Wikipedia - where they had his name down, but I still could not remember who it was, so I Googled him. Even with a picture I barely remember him - made quite the impression he did.
As for the whole Katie Holmes song and dance, I think the only thing that was more of a let down was when they hypped the whole Cat and Nigel going to dance and then showed some stupid computer clip of their head super-imposed on some cartoonish dancing bodies.
I too think Janette was robbed and should be in the final 4, but have been rooting for Jeanene for a while. I loved her solo this week and have really liked her (except the waltz).
Cheers

Lizbot:

Pottymouth, you are made of awesome! Don't ever apologize for getting sappy over your love of dance or this show. I feel the same way, and I've never been a dancer (except in my head). The genuine passion and affection mixed in with your snark is part of what makes your blogs work so well!

And very nice with the Hugh inclusions. What a versatile man! Hard to be believe that the singing and dancing in a top hat could also convincingly play a snarling, sexy badass character like Wolverine...with all those bulging muscles popping...and the sexy glare..and..oops, got distracted

You totally imprinted your thoughts on my brain because all through Katie's performance I was thinking: What? Was Hugh Jackman too busy? I wasn't disappointed with the performance because I didn't expect it to be much anyway, despite all of Nigel's hype. Did anyone actually think that it was going to be something special? And the excuse that she did it for charity does not wash with me. If she were someone who would actually draw viewers and donations in droves by merely appearing, I'd bite. But really, how many people tuned in primarily to see Katie Holmes perform? Show of hands. Anybody?

I was PISSED but not totally surprised that Melissa and Evan misssed the bottom 3. I agree, Jason was just coming into his own and he was majorly screwed over by being paired with Caitlin for the first half of the competition (I still think Caitlin never should have been in the competiton in the first place). Can you imagine if he and Kayla had been paired from the beginning? I think Brandon and Janette would have had a run for their money in the power couple department.

I have adored Evan from the beginning, but it was his time to go. He seems to have stretched as far as he's going to in this competition. Melissa has been near the bottom of my favourites list pretty much since the beginning, but now she's officially on my NEEDS TO GO list. So so so over her. I agree with the person who said that she is a very limited ballerina and she's horrible at anything that strays too far from her genre (e.g., disco and chacha).

I think the producers are ready for Evan and Melissa to go judging by the spoilers for next week...

I too would have loved to see more of the past seasons' dancers instead of Katie's pretaped, lipsynched routine. Instead of dancing backup, why couldn't Josh (and each of the other past season winners) have gotten the opportunity to dance solo or even dance together? Or do a pseudo dance battle? That would have been so cool! Damn that Nigel. He ruins everything!

shibaby:

I agree w/ everyone regarding Katie Holmes' "performance" on the show, but I think she was capable of more...I remember her being on Eli Stone and she did some sort of Broadway-ish kind of thing there in a dream sequence and I remember there being more content then. And I'm sad to remember this (even though I freakin' LOVED the show when it was on), but she sang on Dawson's Creek too...much better lip-synching then too :)

I wish they would just put out a DVD of all the seasons...there are SO many good dances I would love to watch over and over. Even better...they should put up a site that allows you to select the dances you like and then make a DVD out of them! I'd pay for something like that :)

kwBadger:

Ugghh, Evan should have gone home weeks ago. He's great in his own genre, and seems like a nice guy, but he sucks the life out of all the dances he's in and just cannot pull off the "sexy latin" thing.

My friends and I call him "SanjEvan," because like Sanjaya on American Idol, Evan has stayed on this show much longer than he deserves.

PottyMouth:

Chibby: Yep. I would have preferred that Melissa go this week, too. I wish Janette had made the final.

cattyfan: It’s nice to share! :) I agree with everything else you said. ;P

JohnnyLegs: I would love it if we had an all Mia and Wade show! Someone call Nigel!

here4beer: I will be beyond pissed if Melissa doesn’t draw hip hop this week. What complete bullshit that would be.

georgiababe: That’s awesome that you decided to get back to dancing!! The show always makes me want to get up and dance!

Chibby: Maybe with a better choreographer it would have been better. It’s so hard to say because she sucked SO badly.

rjfrankel: I hear you – I’m not as passionate about anyone as I have been in years past. And although I’d love to see Jeanine win, I won’t be outraged if she doesn’t. I’m not quite sure what that says about this season.

Memememe: You actually make a good point about some of the most famous and best choreographers being heartless bastards. Thanks for the update on Donyelle – I always liked her.

tv freak: As much as I like Evan I sure as hell hope he doesn’t win the entire season. That will annoy me.

wcsdancer: I agree about Janette – she was never my favorite either. The face pulling always irritates me. I will be using Schwimmer-esque as an adjective in the future!

newcastlefan: Don’t joke – it’ll probably happen.

cattyfan: LMFAO!!

blazergirl: I heard the same thing about Sabra. I really do wish they’d do a “where are they now?” segment. It was a real missed opportunity, I think.

messystation: They’ve done krump on the show before, but I don’t think we’ll see it this year if we haven’t yet.

Lizbot: I would have loved to have seen solos from past contestants, or even past dances. Hell anything would have been better than Katie. Hmmm, maybe anything is not the right word. I guess I could envision worse.

shibaby: I love that idea. I’d pay for my own personal compilation DVD too!

kwBadger: That’s way harsh. I don’t think I’d go that far. ;)

I can’t wait to see what tonight will bring!! Hopefully they’ll all kick ass so much we won’t want to see ANYONE leave!!

SWAK, PottyMouth
