In a dramatic voiceover Cat tells us that thousands auditioned, hundreds (or one hundred and fifty two) moved on to Vegas, but only twenty got to appear on the crappy new stage (twenty one if you count Brandon Dumlao, which I guess they're not doing).
We are down to fourteen, and tonight they will battle it out for your votes. In the end, there can be only one.

Lythgoe was an effete snob! He died on his knees! I took his head and raped his woman before his blood was even cold... hahahaha!
Welcome! To So You Think You Can Dance (dance.............dance)!
I still don't like the opening dance intros on the new stage. Of course this would bug me even if we were still on the old stage.....

UGH. Buy a fucking shirt with buttons!!!!!

Don't you just love my sparkly tin foil dress??
No guest judges again this week. At this point I think I might even get excited over Toni Basil.

Nevermind.
This week's filler question? How did you get into dance? And just for shits and giggles we'll get to see kiddie pictures and maybe even some video of the dancers. I hope everyone's been good to their moms lately!
But before we get to the contestants, Cat has a little surprise for us; childhood pictures of the judges. Anyone want to see a nine year old Nigel? Me either.

I was expecting an oil painting; I didn't know photography was invented so long ago.

Before the botulism
Adam says that thanks to botox she doesn't look any different. Hahahahaha! I love you, Adam!

Adorable then, adorable now.
First up to dance are Asseleigh and Jakob. Asseleigh says that as a child she was always energetic and her mom tells her she never slept. Translation: even her mom hates her.
Her most memorable dance performance was when she beat out CeCe for the part in Mr. Melman's new show.

Jakob has always been really artsy. No way! He also went through a chunky phase which is when he really got into dancing.

He loved it, and as an added bonus, he also lost weight. I for one am glad that he loved it because he's a pretty amazing dancer. I am also glad he lost weight because I am very, very shallow.
This week they will be dancing a Tabitha and Napoleon hip hop routine. The story of the piece is about a couple (duh), they're in love, and she finds out that he has cheated on her. This should be great practice for when Cat inevitably seduces Ryan.

Okay, the first thing I have to say is that the text messages displayed on the stage screen? Dumb. That aside, I was surprised that someone finally gave Asseleigh some actual choreography to perform. Shocking!
Perhaps even more shocking than that was the fact that she wasn't terrible doing that choreography. Don't worry, I still hate her. What did bug me about her in this was that I thought she was overselling the emotion. Her dancing was okay, but her faces were over the top which ruined her performance for me. I think I might have actually liked her in this if it weren't for the face pulling. Eeek!
Jakob is definitely one of my favorites. He continues to kill it in every style he gets. I was actually worried about him getting hip hop, I wasn't sure if he'd be able to hit it hard enough, but I thought he did a really good job. I don't think these guys are going anywhere anytime soon.
As they finish Cat says that right now thousands of men are deleting messages from their phones. Ummm, if they're watching the show with their wives or girlfriends I'm thinking they're not even looking at that cell phone right now. No need to call attention to it, right?

Don't delete my messages, Hugh!
Nigel's speaking first this week. He thinks this was a great routine, he thinks they always find a great gimmick, and texting was no exception. He knows so many people that have suffered from that.

Other pervy old men?
He's going straight home and wiping his phone. I don't know how that will help when evidence of your disgusting perviness is recorded weekly and broadcast on TV. But yeah, wipe your cell phone, jackass.

I LOVE Clancy Brown in The Highlander...so, thank you for that.
Now I'll read the recap...

Loved your recap. Here's my assessment:
Ashleigh was cheerleader-like in her “hip hop.” And no one called her on her faces. If that had been Evan, he would have been torn to shreds.
I wonder if Karen’s ex-husband is rooting for or against her.
I agree with you on the use of the Bobby McFerrin song. The dancers were having to fight it the whole time, which isn’t fair. That said, I really liked the dancing in this number, and Victor continues to be one of my favorites. You can tell, though, that Nigel is just itching to cut Victor from the group.
Although it was danced well, the Travis Wall number was a little too familiar to me. He needs to be careful not to make all his numbers look alike. And the comments from Nigel to Ellenore smacks of the same crap they shovel on American Idol. If you fail to embrace the character (or song genre,) you get raked over the coals…and if you do embody the character (or song genre,) you get accused of obscuring your identity. It’s ridiculous.
I always thought that saying was “walking IN tall cotton,” as in you’re thrilled to have a successful crop…not “walking ON tall cotton” like you’re levitating. But I’m not Southern, so maybe I’m wrong.
If we’re cursed with both Ryan and Assleigh being in the top ten, let’s hope they get paired with each other…and then draw krump.
Could someone please explain to me the point of Laurieann’s hot pink headphones…that aren’t plugged into anything? When she looks at these photos in 25 years, will she understand just how idiotic she looks?
Nathan is a terrible disappointment to me…and I loathe Mowee. Dream Team? More like Teen Scream…which is all that’s keeping them around. Adam seemed to be killing time because the show was running short.
And I still don’t like Legacy…or his Muppet voice. Sorry…I know I’m probably in the minority.

Great recap as always, Pottymouth!!!
"If we’re cursed with both Ryan and Assleigh being in the top ten, let’s hope they get paired with each other…and then draw krump."
Cattyfan, that is the funniest thing ever I would kill to see that happen! lol
Russell is adorable and I also call BS on them having the foxtrot twice, yeah random my ass but they pulled it off nicely.
I like most of the dances this episode except Kevin/Karen, Nathan/Mollee, and Channing/Victor. I think Channing and Victor are just not that interesting The dance was good but I think it would've came off better if other people danced it. They seem like very nice people but they have the personalities of deadwood.
I think the judges have a bias for Nathan/Mollee that makes to oversee any type of flaws they have. Both of them have had plenty mistakes since the beginning but the judges seem to not notice this until their salsa. I truly feel they are the judges favorites and trying to shove them down our threats by calling them the dream team and everything. Both of them are fine dances but Nathan/Mollee should've waited a couple of years til they matured as dancers to try out for the show.

If I liked Legacy's chest, does that mean I like the rest of him?
Sorry to disagree with you Pottymouth but my favorite of the night was Jacob & Assleigh's dance. And I'm not a fan of hip hop, nor "NappyTab" (which sounds like a dirty diaper to me). There was something about Jakob that was HOT and Assleigh's faces didn't bother me.
Lastly, Cat looked great - tin foil dress and all. But when it came to the results show......ewww.

Hate hate hate "NappyTabs". It's vaguely racist and incredibly stupid.
Stop trying to make "NappyTabs" happen Nigel, it's not going to happen.
Hated that Blackbird song as well. Adam hit it on the nose when he said that dude's music is "inaccessible". And Channing looked fat as well as poor Noelle who got the least flattering outfit of the night. The Dweam Team looked awful too. Who did they piss off?
I will say Ryan needs to button up as soon as Mowee decides to buy a shirt that hasn't been sawed in half.
I totally did catch Kevin smooching Karen's teeth..*le ouch*-Karen was not having that shit.
Russel+Noelle=adorable.
While I dislike Legacy, I thought he did an amazing job with the Paso Doble. He seems to fit that character perfectly just based on what he looks like.
Nigel's boner reared it's ugly, purple head and I seriously got grossed out when he said he didn't like Karen's performance because she wasn't asked to be a sex kitten. Christ Nigel, at least PRETEND you aren't just looking for Karen to bonerize you.

Oh and I forgot!
The only thing I didn't like about Travis' dance was all the crotch shots. Poor Ellenore. She's going to go back and watch this and think, "Holy crap, my cooch is on display for the entire dance..."
And I hate hate hate that dress they had her in with her tiny yellow diaper. If you know it's a dance full of crotch shots, get the girl some shorts-or pants-or something. A skort would have been better than that.
Someone also said that Kevin reminds them of Vitolio in that skeevy way and I agree. He seems kind of full of himself even though he isn't that good-looking nor is he that good of a dancer.
6 of 28 | Posted by PixieGAl262 | Posted on November 21, 2009 1:39 PM
Ok, so I have to admit, I like Legacy. Yah, I said it. Ugh. And I really like Katherine (just don;t let her get emotional and try to speak - can you imagine if she wins, she may just deafen us all).
I have to say, Ryan did a respectable job. I am so not a fan, and I want him gone before the top 10 however (not going to happen as they need a ballroom guy for the top 10). His posture bugs me. His shoulders are so rounded (from too much benchpress), I want him to retract his shoulders. I find it makes his dancing look ackward. Now I knlow nothing about dance so maybe I am full of SH#T, but that is how it looks to me.
Jakob was really sexy in the dance this week. It is funny because I normally don't find him sexy AT ALL, but there was something really manly about him this week.
I love that Russle killed it this week.
Lastly, I too hate the whole nappytabs name. If you insist on doing something so corny as combining the two names at least make it Tabolean.
7 of 28 | Posted by brat | Posted on November 21, 2009 3:15 PM
@brat:
I 100% agree with you about Jakob. While he is my favourite dancer to win the season, i'd have never found him all that sexy until tonight. The outfit, the hair and the dance was really working for him! hottie!
Completely agree about the undeserving tongue baths Mollee and Nathan have been given. And how incredibly pathetic it is that Mollee finds it funny that she's about as mature as a 4 year old now that she's 18. Both of these two should have waited a year or two before trying out for the show, they would have been better dancers and the entire show would have been better because of it. Compared to Jakob, who is only a few months older than them, he can handle it, unlike them.
I agree with Pottymouth as well, after not being able to stand Kathrine and Legacy in Vegas, i am really liking them now!
I'd like to see Jakob and Russell in the finale two guys. I'm much more indifferent to the girls though. I guess kathryn and Noelle could be okay in top 4, but its definitely a guys season to win.
Asseleigh and Ryan = Barf, i hope they're the first gone after we get to top 10.
8 of 28 | Posted by travi360 | Posted on November 21, 2009 3:37 PM
All right, I guess I should admit it, too: I'm starting to like Legacy. His personality is so different from what they showed in Vegas. Now he seems charming. And funny. And his dancing is a lot better.
I thought he did ok at the Paso Doble. It's a difficult dance to do well, cause it's easy to get caught up trying too hard to be macho. The technique was rocky in parts, but he did a good job and was believable. Kathryn, though, was great! She looked really sexy. Adam's right: she killed it.
I loved Russel and Noelle's dance. He was great, as always, but this was the first time that I really noticed her. And, again, I agree with Adam, there was such joy in that piece. They looked like they were having the best time, and it made it impossible not to smile along with them.
I thought Jakob and Assleigh's hip-hop sucked. I thought the movement was all wrong and the choreography sucked and using the screen in back to show messages - as if we wouldn't be able to figure out what was going on without them - sucked. It was just a shitty a routine and I don't know what the judges are looking at when they watch Assleigh dance, cause I see something different.
On that same note, what the fuck do the judges see when Nathan and Mowee dance? They are awful! Nathan is a huge disappointment; his movements are really stilted and unfinished. And Mowee looks all over the place. They have no chemistry and they make it look laborious and no fun. And the judges just keep tongue-bathing them, and tongue-bathing them, and it's making me sick. And really Nigel, Nathan's one of the most talented young men you've met? More talented than Danny and Will and Brandon? I usually don't skip the judges comments, but I can't listen to them tell these two they're great anymore. It's too frustrating.
Karen and Kevin sucked. I'm done with him. Get her a different partner.
I love Ellenore. I don't mind Ryan. I'd like to see her dance with someone else, someone better.
I actually liked Channing and Victor's dance this week, but I agree there's something about them that just doesn't connect with me. I thought the dance itself was good, and I bet I would have liked it even more if someone else choreographed it, someone whose personality wasn't like nails on a chalkboard.
I think this episode was better than previous ones as far as the dances. Hopefully it'll keep getting better as we weed out the dead wood.
9 of 28 | Posted by JohnnyLegs | Posted on November 21, 2009 3:48 PM
Yes, fine, Legacy has won me over, too. Ugh.
I must be in the superduper minority because I actually LOVED the "Blackbird" routine. I thought it was creative and fun and they danced it beautifully. It made me happy.
I also loved the hip-hop routine, and thought Assleigh did a respectable job. LOVE Jacob- I'm starting to hope he wins (even over Russell!).
I was calling bullshit that they gave Russell the foxtrot again, but in the end I was glad they did. I thought he did an excellent job and totally redeemed himself.

First, I'd like to say that in the show's opening shot my first reaction was 'Jeez, Cat looks hawt!!!' And she did.
I'm sorry but I'm still not getting any heat from the Ryan/Ellenore coupling. Despite all the HMV (Here's My Vagina) moves choreographed for Ellenore, I can only say their dance impressed me technically but not emotionally.
I found Laurieann Gibson's choreography equally unimpressive. It reminded me very much of a Webelo Indian dance we used to perform around the campfire when I was a Cub Scout. Although that may not be Laurieann's fault. The timing was so off in certain places that couldn't help but wonder if the dance had not been edited near the last minute to reduce the degree of difficulty. In a few places it looked like Mollee wasn't sure as to what the next step was supposed to be. There were no lifts, flips or twirls and I found that to be a little bizarre being that it's a dance competition.
Finally on the subject of Mollee and Gollee. I can't hate these kids - they're youngsters and not yet mature enough as individuals or dancers to be able to seriously compete on a show of this level. I blame Nigel. How many auditions have we sat through where the judges told the dancers they were great but not yet ready for the show and to 'please come back next year and try again.' This should have happened to Mollee and Gollee. Nigel picked the fruit before it was ripe. Potentially two careers may be compromised because all will remember how poorly they performed on season 6 - simply because they were picked too soon.
As I step off my soap box, I'd like to thank Pottymouth again for another great recap.
Thank you.

PS: I thought 9 year old Nigel looked like Benny Hill. Maybe he's Benny Hill pervy since then as well.

Fine recap. I, too, like Legacy. Agree about tongue baths the kids are getting. Bird song sucked.
13 of 28 | Posted by fire@will | Posted on November 21, 2009 9:33 PM
Telling Nathan he might be the most gifted dancer they've ever had on the show with the most potential is complete BS. For starters, he has zero partnering skills and he hasn't shown he can adapt to other styles of dance. That alone tells me the judges are wrong. Added to that, I think they have deluded themselves into thinking that because he showed so much potential at such a young age he is going to continue to grow exponentially as a dancer as he matures. Again, they're almost certainly wrong. You know what happens to child prodigies? They're impressive for a short time because their talent eclipses their age, and then they fall into obscurity as others overtake them growing into their talent at a more natural pace. Nathan is not going to grow as a dancer like they expect him to, and clearly not in the few short weeks that are left in the season. Please judges, kick Nathan off the show before the top 10 because I dread the thought of him being paired with Kathryn. (Did I mention she wins this season?)
Ryan's ego drives me batty as well. He probably doesn't even own any shirts with sleeves.
A bendy pretzel bobcat thing? Well you got my attention, LOL.
14 of 28 | Posted by ohhhyeah | Posted on November 22, 2009 3:40 AM
What is it about male latin dancers that make them think that the rule: "No shoes, No Shirt, No Service" doesn't apply to them? When Ryan came out in the opening without a shirt I nearly threw up in my mouth. It makes him so smarmy. Yuck! I mean I hated it way back with Dimitry and I LIKED him. Ryan, not so much. He can leave anytime.
However, I love his partner, Ellenore. I love her quirkiness and her sense of movement. I am always enthralled watching her dance. She is one of my picks for top 4.
I really liked the Blackbird dance even though I hated the song. I think that a different (read: less distracting and annoying) version of the song could have been used with the same movements and it would have worked. But what do you expect from SirBitchypants? He lives to annoy us.
Definitely liking Legacy, though I'll admit that I didn't really even notice him in the dance this week. Kathryn was just spectacular and I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I just had this vague sense that Legacy was there with her looking masculine. It must be really tough for the judges when they have to go off of the performance only. They don't get the benefit of playback like we do.
I still like Mollie. I think she is sweet and adorable. But I am not so crazy about Nathan. I think she would be much better if she was paired with a different partner. It would bring some growth, I suspect.
I think I understand where Nigel was going with his comments to Karen. She has excelled because she is good at doing the hot smoldering latin chick. When she is given a dance where she can pull that out, she is wowzers. But when she has to rely on her other skills... not so much. Look at that first still in the recap. Her moves are all latin dance. She is just not in the correct body position for what they were doing. It made it look very awkward. And Kevin? Never liked him and can't wait for his teeth kissin ass to go home.
Even though I really don't like Asseleigh and can't wait for her to get OFF of my tv screen, I begrudgingly enjoyed her dance with Jakob. Was it because of Jakob? Maybe. Was it because of the song? Maybe. It bugs me that she gets to ride his coattails. Could you imagine the awesomeness that could have come from a pairing of Jakob and Ellenore?
Who's left? Ah yes, Russell and Noelle. Love them both!
Right now, my top 4 would be Jakob and Russell, Ellenore and... maybe Noelle or Kathryn? Thanks for another great recap!

brat, thanks for pointing out what was bugging me about Ryan's shoulders! That's exactly what has looked off to me.
Mowee is cute, but performs very show-dancy. I don't understand why the jidges don't see it. Tons of potential, but she's not there yet.
Pixiegal, Nappytabs is the name they've - get this - chosen for themselves. Yep, really. It's their myspace/twitter/whatever name and the name of their hip-hop inspired dancewear. And yes, argyle is heavily featured. Nothing says "hip-hop" like argyle!
16 of 28 | Posted by wcsdancer | Posted on November 22, 2009 10:08 AM
I guess I'm starting to maybe just maybe like Legacy. Though I wish he'd lose his nickname. Ridiculous nickname. I don't love him yet, though I find myself not rooting for his demise like I do Ashleigh. Mowee irritates me a little bit but her solo was pretty great so she's not on my go-home list anymore.
Does anybody see the resemblance between Noelle and Courtney Thorne-Smith from Melrose Place? That's al I see when she's talking.
17 of 28 | Posted by chibby | Posted on November 22, 2009 12:26 PM
I totally like Legacy now. I have just embraced it. And the bit about him practicing with his shadow just made me like him more. Sigh.
chibby - I see the resemblance now. Thanks bunches.
I honestly never noticed that because I was so busy trying to figure out who Channing reminds me of. (It's Kristen Bell aka Veronica Mars, btw.)

I assume you're referring to all of the NappyTabs trivia? I feel your pain! I mean, argyle? Really?
Although I do feel the need to mention that I only knew that stuff due to google. First time someone used that name, I thought it was some judge/random person, but nope. They really do use it professionally.
20 of 28 | Posted by wcsdancer | Posted on November 22, 2009 5:56 PM
Ok, so I had to go check out NappyTabs. There was only 1 argyle piece and it was a regular old sleeveless argyle sweater vest. No biggie. Kind of cute even if you are into that look. I thought they had made argyle basketball shorts or something! lol
The stuff is meh. Some of it sort of cute and some of it hideous. For example, the sweat pants with colorblocked back pockets... barf inducing!
The rest of it is comprised of 80s rip off slogan tees, tees which look a LOT like Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier stuff, lots of plaid mixed in.
I like the reversible hoodies with plain on one side and plaid on the other. Of course, I also have one almost exactly like that which I bought at J.Crew about 10 years ago.
21 of 28 | Posted by Snootchy Bootches | Posted on November 23, 2009 1:05 AM
I stand corrected. More plaid accents than argyle, but still...

In Englnd, a diaper is called a nappy...so basically this "brilliant" duo has christened themselves DiaperPins.
Nice image.

cattyfan: I’m so glad there’s another Clancy Brown lover here! He’s the reason I mourned the loss of Carnevale. The thought of Ryan and Asseleigh getting krump? Made me choke on my coffee! Brilliant!
bigjr6633: Yeah, I really do wish that Victor and Channing had more personality because they are damn fine dancers. I just sort of keep forgetting about them which is never a good sign.
zerocool? Jakob WAS hot in that number, but I think my disdain for her overshadows how much I love his dancing. I’ll be so glad once they switch up partners! Although, if he ends up with Mowee? Ew. I just threw up in my mouth.
Pixiegal262: I refuse to call them that nickname. It is one of the stupidest nicknames I have ever heard and I can’t believe THEY GAVE IT TO THEMSELVES! Stoopid.
brat: Thanks for pointing out the issue with Ryan’s shoulders. I hadn’t figured that one out yet. :P
travi360: It’s crazy that you can have all these dancers so close in age but so far apart from maturity level standpoints. I agree about Nathan and Mowee. A year or two to mature more would have been a really good thing.
JohnnyLegs: The tongue bathing of Nathan and Mowee is so ridiculous. The comment you made regarding Nathan is almost exactly what I yelled at my TV while he was saying it!
here4beer: I think this is the first time watching this show that a contestant has been able to completely change my initial impression of them. Sometimes I can begrudgingly give them props on a performance or their dancing (Like Kayla) but I don’t think I’ve ever gone from wanting someone off my TV to actually routing for them to stay. Wacky!
gerritv: I haven’t been super impressed with Laurieann’s choreography. I agree with you about Nathan and Mowee – I think Nigel did them a disservice casting them on the show this season. He should have waited a couple of seasons. But he’s a jackass.
fire@will: Hee! You crack me up!
ohhhyeah: That’s right, a bendy pretzel bobcat thing. :-O I don’t think there’s any way that Nigel will kick Nathan off before the top ten. For whatever reason, he thinks the sun shines out of the kid’s ass. I think poor Victor is doomed.
Snootchy Bootches: I think I’d take Kathryn over Noelle right now for the top four. There’s just something about her that I really like.
wcsdancer: Yeah, it really bugs me that the judges gave Pauline such a had time about being a conventiony dancer when Mowee is just as bad if not worse.
chibby: I wish he would lose the nickname too – it is incredibly stupid. I hadn’t noticed the resemblance, so I’ll have to pay attention this week.
keenai: I thought that part was so cute, and then while I was thinking it was cute I couldn’t believe I was actually smiling and thinking that something he said was so cute. And then I decided to resign myself to the fact that I like him. I’m still sort of in shock.
“...so basically this "brilliant" duo has christened themselves DiaperPins.”
And now that is all I will hear when Nigel calls them by that other wretched nickname! As far as their website and stuff goes, I have never visited their site, so I’ll just rely on all of you when you tell me it’s LAME.
Thanks for all the great comments and for reading!

Your recap was HILARIOUS! My mom is in hospice care so things aren't so great right now. But I read this review and your caption under Nigel's childhood photo cracked me up! I kept laughing when I thought about it. Oil painting!!! That's great! That alone made me feel better.
I also thought it was hilarious how you picture Assleigh as Iris Myandowski, the Handwalking Queer! Love that movie, "Beaches" by the way.
Keep up the great recaps! I always find something in them to laugh about!

For some reason, when I saw the old picture of Mary I was reminded of the tabloid stories about her domestic-violence marriage when she was a young woman.
Hey! This show was slightly prescient with the cheatin-man-sext-messages, no? wtg, SYTYCD. Next week could you do a number where a grifting state dinner crashing couple's 15 minutes of fame end abrubtly (and forever)? kthx!
