Someone's Been Naughty

I have to admit that this show is reeling me in, and I've been looking forward to seeing what would happen with the contestants this week. Would Aleks stop acting like she's on her way to the electric chair, and would she and Dmitry gel as a new team? Would we get closure on the spelling of "Jamyz"? Would Musa and Natalie conceive a child onstage? Would Nigel's friskiness result in a sexual harassment suit? And would Cat's wardrobe continue to trigger migraines and temporary bouts of blindness? Welcome ... to SOYOUTHINKYOUCANDANCE!!!!!

Yeah, I really love the way Cat says that, but her dress is very, very bad. She totally faked us out by wearing a fairly normal dress last Thursday, and now she's wearing a navy blue ... thing ... with ruffles, and a GIANT. YELLOW. BELT. So that answers one of my questions.

2006-06-28%20untitled1.jpg

I'll end the suspense on another one those questions early, too. Fox has corrected the spelling of Jaymz's name, although it is still hard for me to use the word "corrected" in conjunction with the word "Jaymz." Thanks to all those who pointed out that "Jamyz" was a typo by Fox. It's kind of poetic justice, though - if you name yourself something completely stupid, you can hardly be annoyed if people make a mistake and think it's something even MORE stupid. There was one commenter who thought that I should have Googled Jaymz so that I could have learned that he is sometimes referenced as James "Jaymz" Tuaileva. I think maybe from now on I am going to call him James "Jaymz" Tuaileva all the time. Again, he gets what he asked for. I sure hope he gets kicked off soon.

In related news, watching the opening sequence, I continue to think that James "Jaymz" Tuaileva's partner, Jessica, is the single worst dancer remaining in the competition. I originally pegged her and Joy as the two clunkers. One down. Other things I notice during the opening sequence: Almost everyone looks totally hot, especially Musa, over whom I can barely restrain myself from drooling. Ivan is starting to remind me of Kevin Covais, in a variety of ways. Aleks seems to have recovered from whatever was causing her to look like she had just swallowed a bunch of broken glass last Thursday. Ben has on the coolest red socks/legwarmers.

Chicken Little learns to dance?

There is no super-awesome opening group dance. Why? I mean, they all dance around a little, but nothing fancy. Boo! Then Cat tries to boogie down with them for a few seconds when she comes down onto the stage. Oh, Cat, you really shouldn't do that. Does Ryan Seacrest try to sing? NO. Learn from the master.

I think it's funny that Cat plays the Ryan Seacrest role on this show, but they don't quite trust her with all of Ryan's responsibilities. For example, it's Nigel, not Cat, who announces the actual eliminations. Maybe someday, Cat, if you work extra hard, they will let you read more things off of a card.

There are FOUR judges tonight: Nigel; drunk-seeming choreographer Mary Murphy; and hip-hop choreographer duo Cicely and Olisa. They were the ones who tried to explain the differences between Old School/New School, and West Coast/East Coast, in the context of Aleks's abysmally white hip-hop dancing. I like them - they seem spunky.

The judges are, once again, asked to reminisce about auditions. There are flashbacks of some people sucking and/or spraying obscenities. I ignore this. Really, y'all, it wasn't that entertaining the first time. Or the second time. Please stop doing it. It's okay to make the show 90 minutes instead of two hours. There's no shame in that.

Next there are some (previously unaired) flashbacks of the contestants marching into the studio before Thursday's results show. Apparently, before the results show, they were quite nervous. Who knew? We see some very brief clips of Joy and Jason post-elimination. They were both kind of bummed. Shocking! I swear, if there are any more revelations of this caliber, I am going to have to make sure my defibrillator is charged before I watch this show. The contestants talk about how crazy their days are, and I believe them. There is a cute moment when Natalie tells Musa she wants a divorce. She so doesn't, y'all.

Let's play "divorce." Then later we can play "naughty motorcycle cop," okay?

Hey, first blood!

Great recap. Disagree totally about Benji and Donyelle and the "out of proportion" cheering though -- that "logroll" thing they did on the floor was amazing. I'm backing them because she's a big girl who has the moves (and brava for Nigel for making a statement about this in a POSITIVE light for once, SIMON COWELL...) And I don't vote on this show at all. They, and the tango with that amazing turned-her-with-only-his-foot move, were my favorite moments of the night.

killbondnow [TypeKey Profile Page]:

And, uh, I meant "bravo" for Nigel. I don't think he's girly AT ALL...

zevonia [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Sorry, Amanda, I don't watch the show so I have no opinion on who should get the heave ho but I do enjoy your recaps. Keep 'em coming.

dahrache [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I thought Ivan should have left the first week but I was so impressed by his and Allison's tango. They did an awesome job.

B-Side [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I don't really watch this show, but I saw the first 45 minutes last night. that cuban rumba was excellent. I'm not much of a dance fan, but I could totally see "the story" and feel the chemistry. I was really blown away. And then I felt lame for being blown away by "So You Think You Can Dance."

stm007 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

That one guy's resemblance to the thin KoJo is highly disturbing...

BK_KT [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Heidi and Ryan's dance was amazingly ridiculous. Heidi's face kills me all the time. And Ryan really made a connection with the audience when he flipped Heidi over and then elaboratey spanked her ass. Other than that, I do believe Ivan robbed Stanislav, but he was good last night, probably because hottie Alison was working him over. And I thought Jessiker and Jaymz were great, she's actually really good at what she does (and I know this because I am a danCAH) but its just unfortunate that she has the personality of a cardboard box. What else, I hate Natalie and her cutesiness, if I was Musa I would slap her, but he is the one doing her, so I guess he likes it. Their quickstep sucked. I'm obessed with Trav and Martha and I think they were the recipients of a bad routine. That guy was slightly crazy and I didn't love the other hip hop he did. Love the recaps, didn't love Cat's retarded belt.

BSideLover [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Oh, oh, OH! So much to say!

First, awesome recap - good work. I have to point out my disagreements first though. I LOVED Cat's dress and belt and I LOVE Jessica. I think she's one of the best dancers from the neck down. I agree with BK_KT that she doesn't have much personality.

Also, they DO get to pick their costumes! You were probably fast forwarding during the bit in the beginning (note to self, never watch SYTYCD live) but they basically pick their costume from pre-selected options. So there are NO excuses for CHARTRUESE (sp?) EVENING GOWNS, Alex!

Also, the reason why they switched up the order the judges critiqued this week is because Olisa and Cicely have pretty much no idea what they're talking about and just wanted to reiterate what Nigel and Mary said. I mean, I love their routines and they're fun but they did not say one original thing.

I thought the judges nailed Travis though - he did a great job but didn't gel with Martha. And I agree, don't pull that "America is forgetting..." Oh, they forgot when they voted for you every week? But then I voted for them so I should shut up.

mizta [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I think Jessica and Jaymz are the most underrated couple in the show. They've been great for the past 3 weeks but they don't get as much praise as the other do. I thought their dance was amazing last night. I was never a fan of them but I got totally hooked last night.

I love Brian Friedman! He was like the bitchiest judge last year and I miss him as a judge. He was fun. Nigel is a famewhore.

Amanda ~ You are AMAZING!!! Your recaps actually make me LOL. Great work!!!

What was Cat wearing? Looked like crepe paper and a belt. If Benji had no say over his eye makeup then maybe neither does poor Cat? And, PLEASE, get the woman some diction lessons!!! Her accent is so ANNOYING!!!! "When Ameriker votes..." "Jessiker and Jamyz" (I prefer that spelling... "Ja Mizzzz!")

Benji & Donyelle. OK. Donyelle is "thick" for the dance world but in the REAL World (no, not the Bunim/Murray equivalent) she has a gorgeous, fit body. If she was supposed to be a supermodel, why was she so covered up. I think the girl is GORGEOUS with super charazzma and should be shaking what her mama gave her instead of having it hidden beneath layers of silver lam'e.

Benji. Don't even get me started on repressed Mormons. I worked for a state college in Utah and the poor kids who come from that cult... er, church. That is all I will say. I know that TVGasm is not a place to get into politics or religion.

Again... YAY to Amanda for tackling this show with such style, grace and humor. You rock.

Cheers to BK_KT #7 for "Jessiker and Jamyz" (I prefer that spelling... "Ja Mizzzz!" although calling him out on his whole name was priceless, Amanda).

The thing that's so nutty about this show:

It seems like they're making stuff up outta whole cloth.

There's hip hop dance. But then there's old skool Hip Hop dance. And R&B Hip Hop dance. And East Coast Hip Hop dance. And West Coast Hip Hop Dance. And dirty South Hip Hop Dance. And eastern Dubuque Iowa Hip Hop Dance. And Keep-One-Eye-Closed Hip Hop Dance.

And frankly, it's looks all the same. But the judges comment on how one or another person didn't carry it off. Whatever.

HoneyBunny [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Amanda - I like your recaps.

whawha - "It seems like they're making stuff up outta whole cloth."
Tarnation. I haven't heard that expression in pert' near a lifetime.

HB:

I am, after all, 87 years old.

Memememe [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I really didn't think I'd like this show but Donyelle ROCKS. She & Benji seem like a great dancing couple. It will be too bad when they have to compete against each other. :(

Memememe [TypeKey Profile Page]:

One more thing: why is it that Martha and Travis always seem to have such mismatched costuming?

Jay:

The spelling of Jaymz is unique and actually a very cool way to spell it. I think Amanda has some name spelling jealousy!! LOL She is quick to point fingers at those who she thinks are NOT great dancers so I would like to know what her qualifications are in dancing. Her dance moves probably consist of two steppin'!!
