I love the Muppets, and will sit through The Muppets Take Manhattan or The Great Muppet Caper at practically any moment of the day, any day of the year. Now, I will say that my excitement is slightly tempered by the idea of the modern-day ABC handling this event. Will the story suffer through what I'm sure will be a bunch of attempts to add a little flavor to the story line in a way that only fifty-year-old white television executives know how? Perhaps, but the Muppet humor usually shines through anyway. Take a look at the cast. Ashanti plays Dorothy, Kermit plays the Scarecrow, Gonzo the Tin Man, Fozzie the Cowardly Lion (a role J-Unit also played when he was 12), and Miss Piggy is the Wicked Witch of the West. That's one hell of a lineup.
So, go ahead and mock me, but I'll be setting my TiVo to record this when it airs this Friday night, May 20th, at 8 PM. Don't let my disturbing boner imagery prevent you from tuning in as well. Who knows, if it is good maybe we'll get that Fraggle Rock version of Pulp Fiction I've been clamoring for.

A Fraggle Rock version of Pulp Fiction would definitely have me pitching a tent, hopefully someone at ABC is reading this.

Dude, the Muppets as experienced by adults are not ironically lame. They're just lame.

nbc didn't screw up "a very merry muppet christmas" a few years ago so i think this will be another gem in the muppet collection, whether abc is involved or not. as you said, the muppet humor shines through.
this by no means makes up for three hours of the bachelor last night. ugh.

Dude, watch Desperate Housewives. It's a bunch of gay men trapped in women's bodies.

I read in Entertainment Weekly that the Muppets were controlled by some German production company for the past few years, and no one at Henson was happy about it. They are now under new ownership, so everyone is hopeful that this new movie will be a return to the "fun for kids but some adults see the humor, too" feel of the past. I will definitely watch.

J-Unit can attest to the fact that I'm one of the most obsessive Muppet fans out there, so I of course have to weigh in here with some comments.
I would flip around Ashes statment and say that in order to go back to the Muppets' heyday they need to make it "fun for adults but kids can see the humor too." When the Muppet Show came out in the late 70s it was not a kids show (its pilot episode was entitled "Sex and Violence"). The first three Muppet movies are really not kids movies either, although they can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
In my opinion, the problem with recent Muppet projects (including, mattie, the mostly abysmal NBC Christmas movie) is that somehow the Muppets have become geared towards children first and dumbed down a lot of the writing. The last really great Muppet project was "Muppet Christmas Carol," which appealed to all ages without being strictly a kids' movie - it was very faithful to the novel and didn't shy away from dark or serious moments. Here's hoping this new "Oz" film remembers that the Muppets weren't originally just for kids. And speaking of Oz, I miss Frank.
