The Memory Remains

oc5-18-06

Thursday marked the finale of the third season of The OC. There were rumors for many months that there would be death of a cast member, and FOX officially started the death pool when it told us that one of the characters "wouldn't make it through the night" in their promos for the last episode. I would like to say there was some suspense at what happened, but the news was all over Hollywood long before Thursday what would happen, and we took any anticipation left on this site in order for some great comedic effect on Friday's Clipgasm. Despite all of that, the show has been quite enjoyable lately, so we still had a lot to look forward to.

The big twist last week was that Seth was taken into police custody because they thought he was responsible for the fire; they even had evidence that linked him to the crime. Security cameras showed that he was the last person to leave the building. Far be it from me to complain about plot holes, but as commenter stacyrocks has already mentioned, the police did a pretty good job getting all of that evidence and tracking down the suspect within the fifteen. Sandy had just finished his Man of the Year speech, so it seems to me pretty amazing that they got that security camera footage so soon. Remind me not to get trapped in a burning building in Orange County, where the firemen apparently rescue VHS tapes before going on to that tedious work of stopping fires or saving lives.

Some security footage is not an airtight case, and Sandy has his connections at the DA's office, so Seth gets out that evening, as if they would have taken him away in handcuffs anyway. Remember when Trey lied on behalf of Julie Cooper to get Ryan in jail on an attempted murder charge? They didn't use handcuffs then; you think they might let the arson investigator get some work done before calling in the DA on his day off to take care of this shit.

But whatever, we know the writers are in over their heads when it comes to stuff like that, so it shouldn't really come as a surprise. As the cops were hauling Sandy away, he made a big deal about trying to protect Seth, even though he secretly believes that it was Seth's fault. As he is talking to Kirsten, he admits that he thinks Seth is hiding more, but he is worried that any push could really hurt their relationship. In other news, Sandy and Kirsten now know that there are things a lot worse than not getting into Brown.

When Seth came home, he went in to visit his best friend. Ryan wants to be there for Seth, but to be honest, Atwood has a lot on his mind as well. He was flipping through the channels at the beginning of the episode, trying to find out if there were any police reports about a brand new S-Class being stolen. The uncanny thing about Sandy's suspicion that there might be more that Seth is hiding from him is that he is completely correct. He disavowed all knowledge when he was at the police station, but still doesn't know if he can tell his father the truth. The only thing that will soothe him is to listen to some sickly-looking, overly-trendy, white kids in black suits sing depressing songs about their painfully affluent existence.

Seth left his iPod in his mom's car, but his mom's car is not in the garage because Ryan was using it for cover to get Volchok to the house with the car he was about to steal. Ryan makes his way to the Range Rover when Volchok comes out of nowhere. His getaway didn't quite work as planned, and he thinks the cops got a look at his face, so he wants to go to Mexico. Volchok's only problem is money, or lack thereof, and he wants Ryan to help him. Why would Ryan help him you ask? Because if he doesn't Volchok will say that Ryan helped him steal the car. Personally, I don't know how long Ryan is going to give in to this. Eventually, it would come up to he said/she said, and Ryan would probably come out ahead since nobody actually saw him in the stolen car. Then again, with graduation so close, Ryan doesn't want to ruin anything.

Bring back Johnny! I know he's dead and all but he was so popular with the kids so bring him back, maybe his twin brother he didn't know he had. Then throw in a secret affair between Sandy and Kaitlyn that forces Kirsten to drink again and leads to a climatic bitch slap fight between Kirsten & Kaitlyn. And then Luke can come back and use the tricks his father has taught him to seduce Ryan into playing for the "other team." Oh! Oh! Yea... I dunno... the show should come to a close next season. It's such a mess now.

I hated how this episode ended!!! this show is going to suck next year if Marissa does not live. they have to find a way to negotiate her contract. this is going to be worse than the new season of laguna beach, with all these new characters.
I am sooooooooooooo pissed!!!!!!!!

It was sad to see Marissa go and the show definitely won't be the same, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. Obviously they were unable to capture the same Season 1 magic even with Marissa around, so maybe a change is for the best.

I loved how they included that early shot of Ryan leaving Orange County and seeing Marissa all alone in front of her driveway. That was a nice touch.

I too hope this show turns around with Schwartz being more involved. Either it will get much better or end.

Great episode!! I think the ending would've been much more surprising and less obvious had not a certain young starlet gone on the news and declared herself dead. It was sweet, graduation and the Model Home scene were maybe the best scenes of the year. And the death was the perfect blend of melodrama, cheeze, emotion and it was truly memorable. the show moves in a new direction now - it had to - and it will either survive creatively or not. but grey;s anatomy is not good for it...

During Marissa's death scene, my roommate and boyfriend were complaining about how Marissa could be injured so severely that she was dying yet Ryan was able to crawl out of the car, get Marissa out of the car, and carry her heroically away from the explosion. "They were in the same car crash, so how was he not more injured? That's impossible!" they said. I replied, "Think about what show you're watching!" They clearly don't watch enough soap operas. People die of unidentified "head trauma" all the time!

I thought the finale was okay. Would have been much better if Mischa hadn't been parading around town saying "they've done all they can with my character." And I have to admit I actually cried a little when Marissa died, but I'm blaming it on emotional overload due to the Grey's Anatomy Finale Extravanganza earlier in the week.

Am I the only one that thought Marissa didn't look injured enough to die? I mean, she barely had a trickle of blood running down the side of her face. It wasn't even running really. I was ready for some real blood and protruding bones or something.

As much as Marissa got on my nerves, I didn't think they would actually kill her off. In fact, at the end I wasn't really sure if she was actually dead. I'm really interested in seeing what the OC has in store for next season. I'm not sure how they will continue the show without Marissa. Who will become the new damsel?

Not the greatest finale, at least not as good as the episodes before this one...but at least it wasn't a 2 hour drag-a-thon. Everyone knew Marissa was going to die and it wasn't horribly over the top, it will be more intersesting to see the impact of Marissa's death on the characters next season.

Also, J-Unit...just so you know, DMZ isn't another sex position for Taylor and her Korean boys. It stand for De-Militarized Zone...it's a strip between North Korea and South Korea.

i was a little surprised that marissa died, only because i hadn't heard the access hollywood interview and there were tons of fake spoilers out there (can you believe i bought the sandy is going to die rumor? i guess only in my dreams...). Regardless, i knew mischa was leaving the show, but i thought that she'd be sent away to paris to stay with brenda walsh, and may be put up in the oc every once in a while. iw as devestated by her death, but im a little concerned that by elimination this will make theressa the love of ryan's life. and i want better for atwood then theresa her baby and her man-shoulders. however, the clipgasm from friday was genius and worth marissa dieing on the show. ugh. i loved it.

Right on Fast Love. I also didn't think there was enough blood and gore to really convince me Marissa was dead. The lack of blood and guts combined with Misha Barton's poor acting skills really left me confused as to whether Marissa was dead or not! All in all, I'm glad she's gone, she was dragging the show down and I'm really excited to see what happens next season now!

What a lame exit! I didn't think this episode was great. I read that Mischa Barton wanted out of the show so it made sense to think she'd be killed off but I was so disappointed at how they kept 'hinting' that Marissa would die or at least never come back. I just sat in front of the TV waiting for her to die and that's not how you shock an audience. I imagined Ryan desperately trying to pull Marissa out of the car then realize it's too late, run from the car and have it explode with her still inside. At least something crazy! But noooo, she regains consciousness JUST long enough to tell Ryan not to leave her alone and then she dies of internal bleeding or blood clot in the brain or something mysterious. I cry easily over tv show characters and I didn't even shed a tear for this one. Thank God for TVgasm and the Friday's Clipgasm. It made it all better! :)

Beside that, I thought the best scenes were at the graduation and in the pool at the rebuilt McMansion. When Ryan called Summer a 'biatch', that cracked me up. It's rare that Ryan brings a smile to my face, much less causes me to laugh!

**J-Unit, thanks for the shout-out! :) It made my day, hehe.

going into this, i heard the rumours that someone would die. hey, i was all for killing off marissa, but when it happened i was so pissed.

it was like an exercise in poorly written and executed script writing. i mean she could have simply gotten on that plane, and off to hawaii and never heard from again. THATS FINE. the fact that they had to kill her, and die in ryans arms was just an absurdity. they fact that they cannot just leave things "oh, here is marissa and ryan and they are somewhat content--lets wreck that" is a tired, old has-been.

argh.

jash Author Profile Page:

ALSO, i realize i have lots of anger toward them killing off marissa also because of what it will do to Julie. again here is a case of "ooh, julie and marissa are on the up and up, that cant be, lets destroy that too!"

ugh.

poor julie.

Man, I swear to god, I normally watch this show mainly for the bad acting, but am I the only one that thought the chemistry between Mischa and Ben (in this episode only) was really great? I can't remember another time when they were having such a good time together, when they had sweeter friendship, more loving interaction. I mean, until Mischa had to spoil it with her weird bad acting death. But Ben was really prety good in that scene. Maybe Ben is happy cause she's leaving??

I also think that when Ryan called Summer a biatch, it was hilarious!

j-unit,

no hey count? no mention of the greatest moment of this episode- ryan using the word 'biatch?'

also, way to go fox and abc for cramming the only two shows i watch into the same night and time.

This episode stunk.
Nothing happens and then Marissa dies. Why couldn't Sandy die. Better yet, why couldn't Peter Gallagher, the actor who plays Sandy die and guarantee he'll never ruin another TV show or movie agian with his cheesy acting.
Talk about plot holes... Seth, Ryan, Summer, and Marissa are splashing around in the pool in the middle of the day and then Marissa goes into the house to change and suddenly it's dark out and it's night time. Solar eclipse of the OC? I only wish the nanna was there and was in the crash with Ryan and Marissa. I'd like to see Ryan trying to haul that old battle axe out of the car. The car explodes and say goodbye to nanna.

This show jumped the shark long ago. It's 90210 all over again. In a couple of years Ryan and Seth will be losing their hair and coming down with prostate cancer.

Have to wonder how Mischa was able to run all over town telling everyone she was gonna die?? Isn't that like breach of contract or something?
Makes me wonder...might be a setup..

I really hope they don't try to make this next season of the OC like the first one only with Kaitlin Cooper, because it just won't be able to compare and the show will be even more annoying.

Also one thing that has always bothered me about the Seth and Summer relationship is the Seth still remained a loser and Summer was still really popular, prom queen two years in a row no less! High school doesn't work like that, when a loser dates someone more popular they usually become more popular themselves or Summer would go down at least a few notches. There is no way people would still love Summer and people would still torment Seth. But I guess there are so many other inaccurate things in the OC that I am really reaching for them to recognize that.

I love all this talk about Marissa not looking gory enough to die.

When plane crash sites are cleaned up, one of the things that disturbs workers the most about the dead bodies is that they look outwardly intact. Blunt traumas often do far more damage than any cuts, scrapes, or severed limbs. All it takes is a head trauma strong enough to cause bleeding in the brain, and that's all she wrote.
