The Unusuals: The Beginning

***Please welcome your newest recapper, Lindarinya, with The Unusuals!

Vice cop Casey Schraeger gets transferred to homicide when Detective Burt Kowalski dies. She has no idea what she is in for as she begins to investigate his death with her new partner Detective Jason Walsh, and a series of other strange characters.

We descend upon a bad street corner in New York. A bunch of hookers are looking for Johns. Walking the street is Amber Tamblyn aka Detective Casey Schraeger, aka could this be more of a stretch? She's working undercover! Sorry Casey, Deb did it better on Dexter. Anyway, she gets picked up by Sergeant Brown who tells her she's getting moved from vice to Homicide because Detective Kowalski is dead, facedown, in the East River.

Can I keep the coat?

They head over to a diner to meet Kowalski's partner, Jason Walsh who moonlights as a crappy diner owner. Because why shouldn't a cop own a diner, too? It's not like solving murders takes lots of your time or anything.

Schraeger and Walsh go back to the station. Walsh takes some bolt cutters to Kowalski's locker so he can clean it out before the others get to it. He tosses a shirt at Schrager so she can change out of her prostitute outfit and we can get a nice good look at her rack in the foregound as Walsh yanks out a bondage mask, porn and cocaine from his old partner's locker. Why bother being a cop if you can't take your share of the evidence now and then?

Joan of Arcadia turned out to like red lace bras. Who knew?

Then we get to see Michael and The Hebrew Hammer I mean Banks and Delahoy. What a team of cops! They like to bicker, how cute! And Banks never takes his bulletproof vest off, how quirky!

Schrager and Walsh visit the wife of Kowalski's to find out if she knew anything about his death, and to pay their respects. They have the typical cop show chat with her. And she mentions she's been getting hang up calls. Big clue! Also they can't resist to mention he was a man whore so of course they gotta go check out his mistress, which is another opportunity to have a woman in slutty clothes. Kinda sad they gotta pull the peep show stuff in episode 1 to make it interesting. Walsh and Schrager forbid the mistress from going to the funeral.

Eddie Alvarez, a Ron Burgundy wannabe who talks about himself in the third person begs Sergeant Brown for the Kowalski case. Brown agrees by telling him to get to the autopsy.

Banks and Delahoy get assigned to investigate the disappearance of a city councilman's daughter, which turns out to be the disappearance of her cat as alive, and the reappearance of her cat, dead. The councilman thinks it's an act of aggression because he is on the anti terrorism task force. Blah, blah. They think he's having an affair. He throws them out with a bag containing the dead cat.

As they are walking from the councilman's home Delahoy gets a call. It's his doctor pleading him to get his brain tumor fixed because it's treatable. He listens intently as the doctor tells him he'll die in 6 months if he doesn't get treated. Delahoy doesn't want to be hooked up to machines damnit!! The faux drama of this scene almost made me turn off the television. It was too painful to watch. Thankfully it was soon over as Banks made the discovery (if you can call it that,) of tons of missing cat posters on the streetlights and connects it to their case.

All the cops get together to discuss the case of Kowalski's death. Detective Cole says witness sees an Asian man with scar. Alvarez says it must be mugging. Walsh swears it's personal. Brown brings up a tip of a guy chasing cats so Banks and Delahoy head out to catch him.

They catch him in the act of grabbing a cat and chase him down, Delahoy in the lead. They follow him down into the subway where they jump onto the tracks. Delahoy freezes as the train barrels down on him but it amazingly stops 2 inches away. Banks tasers the suspect on the platform.
