Bradford Meade is getting out of jail and returning to work at Meade Publications. The press is outside the Meade building, hoping to get an employee's perspective on the whole mess. Betty walks by, and puts up her purse to try to avoid the cameras. But she walks right into a bus kiosk, slamming her head.
And I start to worry that this is going to a cheesy, lame episode with wacky things happening because Betty is suffering from amnesia and doesn't know who she is. You know, like the season of Dallas that turned out to be a dream? But it wasn't! This actually turned out to be one of the funniest and funnest Ugly Betty episodes in a while. And I'm not just saying that because they didn't air a new episode for over a month.
You know who else thinks Betty walking into a bus kiosk is funny? Justin, who rewinds the tape to watch it over and over again. Hilda is behind him, practicing styling hair on a fake head at the kitchen table, and is laughing too. My first thought: The Suarez Family really needs Tivo. Seriously, people still own VCRs? And my second thought is: Betty is going to be hearing about this until she and her blue coat (seriously, she wears that thing everywhere) are in the nursing home. Families are like that. I know because my family still talks about how irresponsible I am with money, and uses as an example the time that I lost my wallet. And that happened in eighth grade.
Betty is feeling guilty because Claire turned herself in to the police for Fey's murder after they talked. And now Alexis and Daniel aren't talking; Alexis and Bradford aren't talking; and Claire is in detox until she can be arraigned. And I'm not saying that the family isn't a mess, but wasn't that all true before Claire turned herself in, too? I mean, that clean and sober thing obviously didn't take the first time. Hilda tells Betty that they should be grateful that they come from a nice, normal family.
And as if on cue, an alarm goes off. Ignacio was trying to get paper and set off the house arrest alarm. The phone rings immediately, and it's Constance. Ignacio assures her that he was just getting the paper and not trying to flee the country. I find this confusing, because doesn't the government want to deport illegal immigrants, not keep them in the country? You'd think that they'd give him a "Get Outta Here" ankle bracelet that wouldn't stop ringing until he crossed the border. Or maybe I just don't understand Republican politics.
At Mode, Bradford confronts Alexis. There's no love here - Alexis wishes that Bradford was still in jail, and Bradford wishes that Alexis was a man. Neither of these wishes seems realistic at this point. Bradford takes out a rock that Alexis painted for him when he was six years old. Bradford says that when Alexis was missing, he used it to remind him of the son that he lost; now it just makes him think of the son he wishes he never had. So he throws it away. Ouch. Also, it makes me glad that Alex didn't give him a puppy.
Amanda has tickets to a party, but Marc can't go with her. It seems his mother is in town for a cat show and he's joining her for dinner. A dinner Amanda isn't invited to. At first Amanda thinks it's because Marc has come out to his mother, but it's not. Since Marc has been pretending that Amanda is his girlfriend for two years, his mother has been encouraging him to "buy the cow". I think this is the perfect time for a Marc and Amanda fake marriage episode, but instead Marc breaks up with Amanda, telling her "You are officially released of beard duty. Consider yourself shaved." Honestly, Marc, a breakup like that is more like a hot wax than a clean, close shave.
Meanwhile, Bradford goes to see Claire in detox. She's handcuffed to the bed and is scared about her future.
Bradford assures her that he's there for her, and it seems like she's about to confess some new information when Daniel arrives and ruins everything. How can you not adore the Meades? In this family, there's something that can top "I got drunk and killed your mistress and your transsexual former son framed you for it."

Nice recap :)
As for the episode.. I'm entertained, but not impressed. Gay guy and straight girl fooling the parents? Oh that's original! *sarcasm*
As someone that only started watching the show based on buzz and awards, I expected something much wittier than what's being put out. The way critics have been drooling over Ugly Betty made me expect something very sharp-humored but still deliciously ABC campy. What I've seen in about 5 episodes is ridiculously campy and not even remotely sharp-humored. The drama on the show is great. The whole Mode-ownership plot is perfect, but the rest of the show (the comic relief)is DULL. I chuckled a bit at the Tom Cruise thing, but the Suarez dinner was so predictable and I can't imagine anyone older than 13 finding that dialogue funny.
And if I have to hear another Betty idealistic pep-talk, I'm going to stop watching the show. We get it. She's a beautiful person on the inside. That doesn't mean she has to upchuck platitudes from Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul every two seconds!
Its not that I think Ugly Betty is a BAD show. I think its a very good show. However, it doesn't deserve the hype and it doesn't deserve the Awards its recieved.

i love ugly betty and this episode is good but i think it's been not *as* good as it was in the beginning of the season. I dont know if its the whole drama of the meade family but its not quite the same--and i'm TIRED of getting one or 2 new episodes every month or so...what happened to a new episode every week????

All I know is that Wil is such a cartoon character she reminds me of Wile. E. Coyote. The show is sliding down a very slippery slope and the plots need punching up. All the stereotypes are stale.
