Recap: Ugly Betty: Are You In or Out?

Ugly%20Betty%201-18%20Chip%20Chick.jpgThis was the first Ugly Betty episode since their big wins at the Golden Globes and I have to say SUPER DUPER YAY! Any show that can make me get teary-eyed over a Gucci bag deserves many, many awards. And America Ferrara is the most adorable girl ever, and her acceptance speech was classy and sweet. And the whole thing just made me love Ugly Betty even more.

And I've also been watching the new season of "Extras" on HBO, and Ashley Jensen, who plays Christina on Ugly Betty, is fabulous in it, and it made me love her even more.

So basically my point is: I'm having a big love fest with Ugly Betty. And this was a great episode, so the love continues. Yay, let's get to it!

Anyway, this episode opens two weeks after the big events of last episode. The Suarez family is out to eat at a Mexican restaurant. Proof that this is going to be an episode like no other: Ignacio is not in the kitchen cooking for everyone. Has anyone else noticed that 98% of Ignacio's scenes involve cooking? A non-cooking Ignacio means a whole new Ugly Betty World. Either that or he doesn't love his family any more.

Betty is sulking over not having a job, but Hilda upstages her. Herbalux has been recalled because it makes people's hair fall out, so she's out of a job too. Hilda points out that Betty already has another job. Yup, Betty is the chip girl at the Mexican restaurant.

Which means that Betty puts a sombrero full of chips on her head and brings them to the hungry customers. If this was a real restaurant, I would eat there every single day. "One more hat of chips, please! Pronto!"

Wil and The Bandaged Woman meet with Steve. He tells them for $1 million, he'll give them proof that Bradford was responsible for Fey's death. When they hesitate, he gives them 24 hours to decide. The Bandaged Woman says that once they hand over the money, they have to be ready for an immediate takeover of Mode. Haven't they been planning to take over the company for months? Have they just been sharing lip gloss tips instead of coming up with an actual plan? As far as I can tell, their strategy was largely stolen from Evil Dr. Will on Big Brother All-Stars: Divide and conquer. Or, as TBW says, if there's anyone at Mode they can't trust, it's time to get rid of them.

Wil immediately puts Marc on the job. He runs around the office with a Polaroid camera and takes pictures of everyone. Marc is the definition of "awesome-in-every-way" (it's a hyphenated word, look it up). But I'm not sure that when you're putting together the parts of your evil secret plan, the best strategy is to attract the attention of every single employee by making as big a fuss as possible. Evil Dr. Will would not approve!

They post the pictures on a secret bulletin board in Wil's office, dividing everyone into those who are staying and those who are going.

Christina's stuck in the middle of the board. She's a good seamstress, and she is the only one who knows Wil's real measurements. But neither of them can understand a word she says. The movie "Snatch" would obviously make their heads explode. Much to Marc's dismay, Wil wants to put Amanda in the "No" category, as she's loyal to Daniel. The only way Amanda can stay: if she proves her loyalty to Wil. If Wil is going to use the fact that Amanda slept with Daniel against her, maybe the best way for Amanda to prove her new loyalty is to sleep with Wil? I'm pretty sure that would work on "The L Word".

Meanwhile, Betty decides to go into the city after chip work. Daniel is getting back from his trip to Brazil the next day, and wants to make sure that his fridge is full and that his dry cleaning is there. She says that she feels guilty for the situation he's in and wants to make his return a little easier. Fact: Betty is the nicest person alive. Fact: She doesn't work for Daniel any more, so going to his apartment is a little bit weird.

Fact: Daniel never left for Brazil. Things Daniel has been doing: Sitting in his apartment. Eating take out. Watching TV. Things Daniel hasn't been doing: Cleaning up after himself. Shaving. Showering. Boy, is Betty in for a surprise.

This episode was so fantastic and I'm also so glad America won the Golden Globe!

I was also surprised with the whole Fey/Alex/Alexis twist! I was so sure that the bandaged woman was Fey...and I should picked up on it when Daniel said that he didn't think his brother actually died, just on a long trip. Also, I really want a Henry/Betty romance in the near, NEAR future. Go away Walter, you totally suck, while Henry is a total babe.

What the...? [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I agree that the seemingly romantic moment between Betty and Daniel was uncomfortable...but in the original Spanish soap, there's a romance between Betty and her boss. Could the Show be heading in this direction as well? I'm not ready for a Betty/Daniel makeout scene.

LOVED the Fey/Alexis twist - complete surprise and very telenovela!

HoosierKatie [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I don't think the writers will ruin the show with a Betty/Daniel romance - that would be disaster.

This recap was pretty good, but you skimmed over many of the awesome parts! How could you not explain why they did Karaoke and Daniel's reaction to it?? (You get 1/2 price if you sing... "But I'm rich!" said Daniel)

Ah, Ugly Betty--My Favorite Show of the year....

I am in love with this episode, however I got a little disappointed in the middle of it, not because it was a bad episode but because it was half over but I want MORE!--guess I'll have something to look forward to this Thursday.

I agree with What The....?--the twist is very telenovela like, but what I love about the show is the fact that it's written so well. The characters have a lot of depth and presented so well:

Notice uber evil Wil's attempt to be a good mother despite her evil plotting and she actually has a capacity for love. Is she really evil or does she need only to be loved or to love.

Is Daniel as superficial and shallow as he puts out to be, dating and sleeping with attractive women, but can hang out with awkward looking Betty and does not act as uncomfortable as we think he'd be. A Betty and Danielle romance at this point will be extremely odd but as a fantasy sequence where Betty gets a good makeover (not Queens-style) can maybe work--- I'm sure this will be something we see in the future.

I love the scene where Betty goes to Daniel's apartment. Awesomeness, you commented that it was weird for Daniel to hide in the closet after hearing someone is about to enter his apartment. Did you notice that Daniel rushed to the closet and Betty placed a whistle in her mouth (HAHAHA) Daniel was actually about to change into a clean shirt. I think Danielle was not expecting a burglar but maybe a woman he has slept with before if not Betty. The high fives I thought was very sweet. I think it showed the playful side of Daniel and how he is feeling a little cheery about Betty's loyalty. His high fiving is reminiscent of a young man in his 20's and I think that's so cute. It's like he went back to possibly the time when his heart was first broken. I didn't see a plot hole in that particular scene.

Anyways, I can't wait for the new episode!!

I don't feel like 100 cupcakes should be an all-night venture for four people, unless maybe it's a bizarre cupcake recipe where you have to bake them for 4 hours and the Suarezes only have one cupcake tin.

I do NOT want Betty and Daniel to get together. It's so nice to have a platonic male-female friendship on TV!

Audge [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Awesome recap! I'm not comfortable with Betty and Daniel getting together, either - bring back Christopher Gorham!

helloooeverybody [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I read somewhere that in another version of Ugly Betty, the Betty and Daniel characters got together and the audience hated it. Another thing that the audience hated was Betty getting a makeover. Whoever was being interviewed was saying those are two things that will never happen on the American version.

Loved the self tanner jokes "orange around the collar" and the handprints!

This was a great episode! I can't believe the Alexis twist.

aholic [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I am not a frequent commenter, but just wanted to give you some love on the recaps since there haven't been a lot of comments.

I am enjoying them, please keep doing them!

TVCheese [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Awesomeness, it's so fun to read your recaps knowing how much you love this show as well!

The Alex/Alexis plot twist was GREAT. And the quality friendship time between Betty and Daniel was so touching to see. I agree with other posters that a romance between them would be a little unrealistic, but I think it's fun to at least see a little flirting and at least the possibility of something happening.

One more thing- I really like Amanda and Marc's characters. I think they both add so much to this show, even in a mostly evil way. I crack up at both of them.

bluesmith [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I'm so confused....why is Alex(is) out to get Daniel? Wasn't he a bigwig at Mode before he "died"? I'm just not following why there's this elaborate scheme for him to come back. HELP!

moodylupin [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Comparing this Betty to the latin telenovela is not that accurate, at least not in terms of the dynamics of the relationship with her boss...
In the original Betty ... yes, Betty & her boss have a relationship but the plot was completely different from the one in this series. Betty herself was in essence the same that Betty The Ugly, but not so much in others. She was head over heels for him, prince-charming like, since she first saw him. She was as intelligent & timidly assertive, but extremely less social, very naive, only 1 friend, over-protective parents. She was romanced & played at firt (for business purposes)and he fell for her while at
it, but when she found out she leaved the company and when she came back (due to some other plot turns)she came with the make-over done(not a bold one, but hugely improved)...
As far as this telenovela was, everyone was rooting for the makeover to be done, and I don't think they "hated" the relationship she had with her boss (when she actually fell for her)... but you know, that's the way we do telenovelas, haha.
But I think that for this series neither will happen just for the sake of getting a point across ... at least for now.
