Once Upon a Time In Mexico

vm1-25-05UPN made us wait a long time for the return of Veronica Mars. It's been so long since our latest episode that UPN, having formed an unholy alliance with The WB, doesn't really even exist anymore. Since my last recap, I have been hard at work preaching the gospel of Veronica Mars, and can report that I have successfully recruited half of my parents, and all of my sisters living in Florida. By the time I was on my way back home (delayed in PHL, unable to connect to SBC Freedomlink, forced to get sloshed to pass the time), I was completing my third cycle of the DVD set. I think I have my addiction under control, but I nearly threw the DVDs back in when I saw there was no episode last week. I desperately needed to know what happened to Meg's baby, and what would it mean for Veronica and Duncan, and were they going to explain why Wallace was back, and, well, we got the answers to all of those questions, and it was worth the wait.

As you might expect, it's been a pretty difficult holiday for Duncan. Let's face it, he is pretty fragile and his parents aren't that supportive, so finding out he is a father and then the mother of that child dying just a few weeks later could have sent him back to Cuba really quickly. Veronica wanted to check up on Duncan, and she happened to bump into Logan on the way there. We all know what I think of Logan's head, but I think his wardrobe is starting to bug me a little more, and I couldn't figure out why he only sported half of a pride patch on each arm. When these two are together, the room is either filled with gobs of sexual tension or pure bile. This evening was the latter, with Logan saying "hi ho", which Veronica took to mean "Hi, ho", but was meant to preface "off to work we go". With that explanation, the working girl slur didn't hurt so much, and Veronica sort of liked being thought of as Snow White.

Veronica wasn't interested in Sleazy, so she went to see if Mopey was in his room. Mopey was nowhere to be found, however, and instead, there was Slutty. If you folks aren't following, Duncan was nowhere to be found in his bedroom, and Veronica was quite surprised to see Kendall Casablancas there, enjoying herself to a nice hot shower - exactly the type of shower you take after getting all hot and heavy with a woman. Thinking that her prince charming was with the flexible witch of the west was too much, and Veronica left, giving Logan and Kendall a chance to make fun of each other about how much the other enjoyed making the sex, but just wouldn't admit it.

We all know that getting back together with Duncan was difficult for both him and Veronica. While the circumstances surrounding their original breakup were crazy enough that you couldn't fault them for being together, Duncan seemed to be very happy with Meg. A lot of people think that things would have been a lot easer if Duncan had stayed with Meg and Veronica stuck with Logan, Meg might even be alive. Still, since there is a lot of history with the Duncan and Veronica relationship that we only get in flashbacks, I think we have to give the two of them a shot for trying.

None of this means that the people around them can't give them advice. Dick Casablancas takes it upon himself to educate Veronica on the ways of being a billionaire's trophy wife. Girls like Kendall let guys do things to them that make girls like Veronica thankful that there are girls like Kendall. I guess that's one way of putting it. Veronica doesn't take Dick's advice about letting it all go for the sake of some points on the purity test. She confronts Duncan, but he doesn't want to answer questions. Poor Veronica, even when Meg is dead she is some pretty good competition (has to be the legs). Duncan decides that he has had enough of Veronica, and breaks up with her, and almost the entire school was there to witness it.

I'm still not 100% sure I followed everything that happened in this episode, but it sure was a heck of a ride. Quite different than the usual mystery-of-the-week.

BTW, the girl in the truck at the end with Vincent & Duncan wasn't Vincent's girlfriend--it was Astrid, Celeste Kane's personal assistant. Well, maybe she's Vincent's girlfriend, too; this show's so damn incestuous, isn't it?

I never would have recognized her (since her hair wasn't so Veronica-like in her previous appearance on the show) but she was apparently in the "previously on Veronica Mars" shots at the beginning of the episode.

My biggest beef with this episode (which was great) is that they never sufficiently explained the urgency for Duncan and Veronica to kidnap the baby. Duncan, as the biological father, would be presumed to have the right to the child. The Mannings might fight for custody, but he has all the advantages in that fight, and they certainly could not adopt out the baby without his consent. Obviously, we're supposed to believe that they were an immediate danger to the baby's life, but the way they abused their daughters was psychological brainwashing, not something that would harm a newborn. And even if there were a danger of them harming the baby right away, Duncan would have the right to take physical custody. All the talk about Meg fearing who her parents would give the baby to makes no sense, because no one can adopt the baby if Duncan objects.

What about the shout out at the end when they have the lost #'s on the fortune that she puts on her mirror? I think that it means that Veronica is going to solve the lost mystery also.

I agree that was the first time I ever witnessed any passion between Veronica and Duncan. I'm still rooting for Veronica to give Logan another chance. The baby's name is Lily.

I thought that Veronica and Wallace were in mexico with Duncan. There were 2 hitchhikers who wished Duncan good luck, a black guy and a blonde girl. It looked like them to me. Also, vincent van low already had the baby in the truck when duncan got in. When did they hand it off?

It was a good episode. I just couldn't understand why the fbi just called off their search. they had a warrant. Why didn't they keep looking around the marses' house?

This was a VERY WTF-worthy episode for me. I had to rewind the episode three times to realize what was going on.

I'm glad I read the recap b/c I missed some of the details even though I watched it. Thanks J-Unit!

I'm not sure how I feel about this episode. It was very different from the other episodes (kind of like the episode of House where we learn the story of House's injured leg), and I don't like change. I absolutely love that Duncan snuck into Mexico in Lamb's patrol car. Brilliant! Also, it will be interesting to see how Wallace's story plays out. I didn't really believe that Veronica and Duncan were broken up because Veronica wouldn't go that emo all of a sudden, but I didn't know how they pulled off the baby heist.

Unfortunately, I agree with #2 that kidnapping plot doesn't make any sense. First of all, how can he kidnap the baby if he's the father and, according to what we've learned so far, no one else has been given custody of the child? We will probably learn that the baby was in some kind of danger, but I have another theory. Duncan didn't want to deal with the legal battle over the child, and Celeste threatened to withhold financial support for the baby AND Duncan if he chose to keep the child. In order to avoid being poor and dealing with a long legal battle, Duncan took the child to raise by himself. However, like #2 said, Duncan has legal rights to the child so I can't see the legal battle being long. Still, if Duncan couldn't afford fancy lawyers, who knows what could happen.

I also have a big question about what the long term plans of Duncan and Astrid are. Why would Astrid give up on going to law school, on Celeste's dime, and risk ruining her future by being an accessory to kidnapping? Sure Celeste treats her like crap, but why give up everything and move to Mexico because of that? Similarly, why would Duncan give up his wealthy lifestyle to move to Mexico and raise his kid? He has to assume that someday he'll get caught, so what's he planning to do when that happens?

I torn on this episode. On one hand, all the plot twists were interesting. However, the core of the storyline seems to make absolutely no sense. Unless the next episode(s) give a pretty convincing explanation for the kidnapping, this episode is going to be one of my least favorite episodes. Still, I love the show and I'm eagerly awaiting to see what the writers come up with. Sorry for the huge post.

I am going to miss Duncan. And... I...um...kind of got something in my eye and teared up a little. I think it's allergies.

I didn't even notice that. Thatnks for the heads up.

AbbyAnn,

I still think that since Meg was under 18, custody goes to the parents, although I am not sure about California law specifically. Maybe a lawyerish type would like to answer.

Custody would not go to the parents, it would go to the father of the child. ALthough since Duncan is 18 and Meg was not her parents could file for Statutory (is that how you spell it?) Rape and then it would go on forever. Just becaseu the mother is underage, does not automatically give the father no rights what so ever.
