vm10-10-06Although very exciting, the premiere of Veronica Mars raised a lot more questions than it actually answered. Last week I complained that it was a little dense and didn't give enough answers, but I think I simply let my V-mars geekery get the best of me. While I still think that the Keith story line did add some confusion, I shouldn't act like it was the end of the world. Besides, there were plenty of good things happening in the first episode and this second episode finally tied up one of the loose ends from last year. And is it just me, or is Veronica actually making more friends than enemies? Let's see how long she can keep this up.

Last week, Parker was raped and her head was shaved. Listening to her story, it sounds like she was drugged at a party and then taken back home. The worst part about this was that Veronica was actually in the room when it happened. It was not only dark in the room, but after seeing Parker so uninhibited about getting naked, I'm sure Veronica didn't think that anything going on was non-consensual. That doesn't make what happened any easier to deal with, especially when Mr. Sensitive himself, Sheriff Don Lamb.

It's bad enough that the Sheriff is incompetent, but his brain is a holdover from the 1950s. Before he even hears Parker tell her story, he asks Veronica if this is "wolf cry number 2". When Veronica was raped at Shelly Pomroy's party a few years back, she tried to go to Lamb (she was too ashamed/embarrassed to tell her dad), who refused to do anything because everybody at the party was from rich wealthy families. He stopped short of saying "she deserved it", but it was pretty close.

Veronica hears the Sheriff interviewing Parker and knows that he's just going through the motions, especially when it is evident that Parker knows very little about what happened to her. Finally, Veronica speaks up and says that she was in the room when it happened, which, as you might have guessed, makes Parker very upset. Veronica said she only heard breathing and buzzing, which in retrospect, seems like a pretty big red flag when you know that there is a rapist out there shaving heads, but the last thing Veronica wanted turn on the lights and find out it was just a normal case of two slightly drunk people making out in bed and brushing their teeth with their electric toothbrushes.

Last week, Wallace mentioned that Logan hadn't show up to his Sociology class, but this week Logan decided that college was a fairly good idea. And hey, if Homer Simpson was your Sociology teacher, wouldn't you go to class as well? OK, it wasn't actually Homer Simpson, but the actor who gives Homer his voice, Dan Castellanata, had a cameo as the Sociology prof. Since I wasn't paying attention to his name and couldn't find this credit on IMDB, we will call him Professor Homer.

Professor Homer's first lecture is about war and prisons and torture. He shows a few pictures from Abu Graib and asks the class if they really thought that torture was invented by a bunch of rednecks in Iraq, and not getting much of a response, shows another picture, and asks how many of them thought they would never do that to another human being. Most of the class raises their hands, although I guess we shouldn't be surprised that Logan isn't one of them. Professor Homer then says that statistics show that of the dozens of people raising their hands, only a couple of them are right, and then assigns a 20 page research paper on the effects of imprisonment.

After writing for TVgasm, twenty pages is no longer as intimidating as it used to be. I've already clocked in 500 words in this recap, and I'm just getting started bitches! However, in college, I would have said "Fuck me!" under my breath, and cursed Professor Homer for weeks. Luckily, Professor Homer gave a way to get out of the research paper. He was going to conduct an intensive study on the prisoner/guard relationship. One group had to extract information from the other. The winning team got out of the research paper, and the losing team only had to write ten pages. Logan and Wallace both volunteered.
