Love Hurts...and Burns Too

vm4-25-06When I recommend that people watch Veronica Mars, I always tell them to start with the Season One DVD. It's very difficult to explain for somebody who hasn't lived through the experience, but the final three or four episodes pull together so many parts of the mystery and bring forth so many different emotions, it becomes more than just a TV show; it's an experience. Laugh at me if you want to, because I did the same thing last year, but it really is true. I was lucky to have it on DVD because the only thing interrupting my need for more Veronica Mars was sleep and hygiene, and it is KILLING me to have to wait an entire week to get my fix. If I haven't gushed enough already, you can probably tell that I loved this episode. Mystery, romance, intrigue, antibiotics; this episode had something for everybody. And since things are really getting complicated, I have to warn you that the recap is long, but oh was this episode worth it.

So, did you ever hear the one about Veronica Mars and Chlamydia? It goes like this. There was this girl named Veronica Mars. She went to the doctor. The doctor said she had Chlamydia.

OK, so maybe that wasn't funny, but it's true. Veronica's doctor told her about the diagnosis, and being told you have an STD is bad enough, but for Veronica, who hasn't really had any sort of love life besides the kind you find in the top drawer, it's has to be even worse. If you get an STD when you're sexually active, at least you can say that you had some fun getting in trouble. Unfortunately, since the symptoms may not show up for months, if at all, Veronica has no clue how she might have contracted the disease, especially since she said she and Duncan always used protection. Besides, Duncan wouldn't cheat on her, would he?

As Veronica said, the saying goes "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade", but she can't figure out anything to make if life gives you Chlamydia. But as bad as Veronica's problems may be, Mac is the one living the nightmare. She is stuck going to the prom with Butters. Being the principal's son is difficult enough when you are cool, but when your biggest claim to fame is a radio show of declining quality, life can be hell. Is one cell phone interceptor worth all of that trouble? The prom is one thing, but dinner on a replica pirate ship? That is a whole different ballgame.

Is there any hope for Mac? Well, aside from suggesting Medieval Times instead of a pirate ship, there isn't much she can do to get out of this. Luckily her classmates have decided to help her out, although in an indirect way. There were so many alcohol violations during the senior class trip to Magic Mountain that they administration has decided to cancel the prom.

Keith got a phone call to come to the Camelot Hotel, scene of many Veronica Mars greatest moments, starting with the opening shot of the entire series. And who could forget that forbidden, steamy first kiss between Veronica and Logan[NOT Duncan, thanks Mark. sorry, i still mix up the names]? There have been plenty of low moments as well, like when Veronica realized her mom had some relations there with Jake Kane. This time around, the person having extra-marital relations was none other than Woody Goodman. Keith got there to find Woody in his underwear, and a woman who was not his wife passed out on the bed.

At least she's not dead

As a private investigator, Keith is not exactly scared to use methods that aren't entirely legal to get the job done, as witnessed by his breaking and entering into Kendall's house last week, but he always uses his discretion. Woody hired him to save Terrence Cook's name, so when Woody asks Keith to take the girl to the hospital to avoid the scandal, Keith balks at first. Woody assures Keith that he is only doing this because he wants to save the incorporation bid, and so Keith agrees to drop this woman off at the hospital.

"And who could forget that forbidden, steamy first kiss between Veronica and Duncan?"

It was Logan, not Duncan, I think.

Ugh, I'm sick of this. I just want the next two episodes NOW.

I think Lucky had the STD, passed it to Meg, who passed it to Duncan, who passed it to Veronica.

wow, great recap! i actually missed this episode, but your recap summed everything up!

It CANNOT be the end for Logan and Veronica! That last scene was heart-wrenching, and you know he felt bad b/c he really does care for her but he has a lot of trust issues in his own life too so maybe he's only comfortable being honest with himself (and her) when he's drunk.

The whole truth about Kendall has to come out in the last episodes, and all the teasing with Lucky trying to whisper the truth to Keith in the prison cell was excruciating! Aaaargh- I can't stand it! I'm addicted. :)

as a sidenote- I think that Logan looks really cute in argyle shirts and you didn't mention what I thought was the funniest line of this episode. When Kendall was threatening Keith in his office and Veronica said "Trouble? You mean like with a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for.......cute?" That was great!

Stellar recap as usual J-Unit. I love that you love VM as much as I do!

I seriously doubt that it's the end of "LoVe". Either they'll end the season with them together, or with a cliffhanger involving them.
Again this week, they're making Woody look so suspicious. It was good before when he was sketchy, but nothing too obvious. Now, I can only think he's some kind of red herring. I think he probably molested his little league team, but the bus crash? I dunno.
Overall, I think it was a good episode. I'm not sure that it had a lot of clues, but I'm sure in retrospect, once the mystery is solved, we'll see all kinds of little clues.
And I agree with Mark that the STD probably went from Lucky to Meg to Duncan to Veronica. Either that or Kendall to Duncan, but I'm pretty sure Rob Thomas said that Duncan and Kendall had never slept together. Tricky tricky.

I want to second J-Unit's suggestion to buy the first season DVD. I recently did based on his recommendation and WOW. I didn't watch last year and this year with Alias ending (I know they are totally different, but I needed something else to love) I got into the second season. But the first season is just perfect. Unbelievably great. Thanks for the great recap.

I think Madison tried to give Gia the "trip to the dentist" but anyways def. a great episode.

Tuesday can't get here soon enough!!!

Great, lengthy recap J-Unit. Sometimes one viewing really isn't enough, so your recaps are great at refreshing my mind.

I also LOVE Logan's argyle shirts. Mmm, salty goodness.

I agree that the last four episodes of last season were FANTASTIC and I can see that it's the same with this season. It has really turns out to be more than a regular television show. Arg, need more VM now!

This was a great episode, but I need more recording devices in my house so I can get around to watching Veronica Mars, House, The Unit, and Scrubs. Stupid UPN moving VM to Tuesday.

I think the writers are making Woody too obvious for him to actually be the one who blew up the bus. I'm still not really sure why the Mannings made Lucky's bail, but it's probably something wacky like Meg's baby being from Lucky. That would explain why Meg's parents were so weird about the baby, other than the fact that they're super religious parents with a daughter who's pregnant in high school. Still, it would make me sad to think of Meg as a slut who cheated on Duncan with the janitor. I always liked Meg, so it would also be a downer if Lucky raped her or something.

As far as the Woody/Cassidy connection, I rewatched the first episode and Cassidy was acting kind of weird (isn't he always) when everyone was sitting around listening to Woody speak. The bigger thing was that the camera panned across photos of Woody with his baseball teams. It was kind of like the way 24 lingers on logos long enough that you can see them, but not so long that they seem like commercials. Unfortunately, the camera was too far away for me to be able to see if Cassidy was in one of these pictures.

I can't wait for the last two episodes!

Kit- are you sure Rob Thomas said Kendall and Duncan never slept together? When I heard about the clamydia, I immediately thought it was a Kendall to Duncan to Veronica transmission. They strongly implied that Duncan had cheated with Kendall. But perhaps that's just more misdirection. Curse their intricate plotting! I'm both eager to see how it wraps up, and very sad it will soon be over. Has anyone heard if the show is renewed or not?

If only TAR would have remained on Tues night. It would have made a perfect night of TV for me. AI to VM to TAR! I don't know whether VM has been picked up to the new network, but I heard that they want to team it with Gilmore Girls, so I think that it's almost a sure thing.

Kit Author Profile Page:

brilliant- I'm pretty sure that's what RT said, after the episode with Duncan running away. Who knows though, producers can always change their mind.
And zoobabe, I agree with you. There was a perfect Tuesday night transition, and now Tuesday feels so empty and Wednesday feels so full! And VM hasn't been picked up by CW yet, and it's not absolutely certain if it will be, but I heard the odds look good. And Gilmore Girls would certainly help improve VM ratings I think.

I love Logan in argyle!

And my lord that episode was awesome.

I definitely think that it was lucky>meg>duncan>veronica as far as the std goes, and I also had the suspicion about the baby being lucky's. I guess we'll see!

goodjobben Author Profile Page:

i guess this episode began a little early because i missed the whole chlamydia scene when they re-aired it sunday night, what a loss... damn you, channel 9.
what an awesome episode. maybe it's just me, but it seemed like the fastest paced/most-dense one since the last season's finale.
for some reason i'm thinking jackie gets pregnant from her night with wallace (since sex on tv always= baby) it would actually force her to stick around and not go to paris so the whole gang will be together next season despite graduating... i wonder how that's going to work next season (hopefully there will be one) with them all going to college.
random- did we ever find out why curly had veronica's name on his hand, or how he even died? also, did they reveal why rhonda's family got that big settlement in their suit against woody/what it was even about?
the molestation idea sounds promising, but i'm betting woody had something to do with lucky's parents going bankrupt instead.

J Unit Author Profile Page:

goodjobben,

Damn you and your logic and common sense! That does sound like a good alternative though.

zoobabe Author Profile Page:

goodjobben- I think that Keith told Veronica that Rhonda's family got that big settlement from finding something in their food at Woody's hamburger place.

Dammit! I also missed the chlamydia scene when I watched the rerun Sunday. OH WELL...Logan does have feelings for Veronica, but major issues for sure. Well can you blame him considering his father had sex with an underaged girl and then killed her? I'm not saying that's an excuse for being a jackass, but I'm just saying...I cannot WAIT for tonight's episode!!

Oh, lets not forget that the girl his father killed was his first love, the same father that beat him on the regular.

goodjobben Author Profile Page:

we shall see, j-unit, we shall see. fantastic recap and title, by the way.

oh yeah, that's right, zoobabe, thanks. that's still fishy though (no, i'm not talking about veronica's chlamydia... ohhhh, rimshot!!) there may be something more behind that payout aside from just finding something in a burger.

now i must go sulk because they're pre-empting vm for the playoffs here in new york.

p.s.- anyone notice that veronica's sad face closely resembles giada delaurentiis' stink-face. did they serve lentil loaf at the alterna-prom?
