ABC is shaking up their daytime schedule. They just announced that they’re canceling two of their soaps, All My Children, and One Life to Live. Wow, you’d think if your show ran over 40 years it would be in the safe zone, but I guess nothing is safe. They’re replacing the soaps with two lifestyle series. One called The Chew, and the other The Revolution.

The Chew is supposed to be a a live show about everything and anything cooking, and The Revolution will be a show about health, and lifestyle transformations. I can see why ABC is moving more into the talk realm to be competitive, but I can’t believe they’re going in head first with two new series. I guess they have to if they’re losing the Big O–they need those damn ad dollars. I don’t watch either of those soaps, but I know this news is disappointing to many. Sorry soap lovers.

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

I read our own dear Beaker, Carla Hall, will be on The Chew.
I’m sorry what a stupid title. Don’t watch the soaps but from the comments that I’ve seen they may have shot themselves in the foot.

As a dedicated General Hospital fan and someone who has watched most soaps at some point in my life I have to say this was dumb. Soap fans are VERY dedicated. I’ve seen how these people behave. They are ruthless. I don’t doubt that people will be FLYING to ABC studios to picket this decision. These people spend 100 or even 1000′s of dollars on soap events each year. It can cost anywhere from 75-100 for a meet and greet and Super Soap Weekend was nothing to sneeze at. People flew to Florida from all over, spent the money to get into disney parks… General Hospital’s fan event is $1,000′s of dollars for the weekend. Soap fans are super dedicated because the soap actor is much more approachable/interactive/(I can’t think of my word).. I can’t tell you how many of them will actually respond to your tweets, follow you and an have conversations with you. I’ve personally never been to any soap event other than the daytime Emmy’s but some of my friends are super fans and they actually have developed relationships with their favorites from the shows.

I’ve gone on enough… All I can say is people are devastated. I know it might be stupid to some but these soaps are just part of some people’s lives. They can’t imagine a TV without them. I think it was a bad call by ABC. I think the guy is charge is an idiot. Hopefully he’ll get the boot when all of this goes down, unfortunately the shows won’t be there.

The two shows together represent more than 84 years of television. But ABC put Brian Frons in charge of daytime ten years back. He, by his own admission, dislikes soap operas, and has been working to get rid of them for years. He has fired stars, cut budgets, and forced unpopular storyline changes to ensure he could get his way.

It’s a sad day for television.

I had no idea he admitted that. I just don’t know what it takes to get rid of someone. Why would you single-handedly destroy an institution? I like Carla as much as the next Top Chef viewer and I’m a fan of What Not To Wear but why would I want to watch a Top Chef NON-winner (I don’t want to call her a loser, feels too harsh) and the stylist who works with the girl in those shampoo commercials with the gray streak (because I don’t think most people know his name is Clinton Kelly).

The thing that disgusts me the most is his insistence that people want more ‘View-like’ shows.. and “The View” this and “The View” that… The View works because people associate it with Barbara Walters, a respected journalist not “oh such fine programming ABC daytime has”… I really hope people who say they will boycott ABC daytime (with the exception of GH) will do what they can…or hopefully someone can pick up these shows. I’m not sure how that would work though.

I’m saddened by this. Soaps were the constant in my childhood. I would always know what time it was by whatever soap the grown folks were watching. It’s strange to think that something that has been on television my entire childhood and adulthood up to this point, was just cut out as a line item.
I never would have got into reality shows or even talk shows if the soaps weren’t there first.

I grew up with Young and the Restless, One Life to Live, General Hospital and, later, Bold and the Beautiful. I don’t watch them anymore, but it is sad to see such institutions go away after so much time.

I know the day is coming but when they cancel Young and the Restless I may have to finally take my meds. Victor and my friends in Genoa City keep me sane. Seriously, I have watched the stories (what my grandma calls them) every day since I was at least 13. I would even schedule my college classes around Y&R and B&B

My mom watched all those shows. General Hospital was always on every day when I came home from school. That was during the original Luke and Laura brouhaha, with the Australian guy, who was some sort of spy? I guess? I grew up, started doing other things after school besides watching TV, went away to college, and happened to be at the house six years later one day at 3:30 and General Hospital was on. I could still follow the plot. All the same people were still on it. Doing the same things. It was stufpifying.

lol @ Clippos Magnificos! so true! But on a serious note, big hugs to all the watchers out there. I remember how heartbroken I was when they cancelled Passions, and it has NOTHING of the history of these two shows. It was actually like a parody and that is why I loved it, but I watched All My Children as a child with my mom when Kelly (from Regis & Kelly) and her husband ran away together. It just seems like they would never cancel those shows. I will not watch The Chew or The Revolution or an extra hour of the Today’s show (or any hour for that matter.) I hate daytime TV. The only thing I watch during the day, if I even turn the TV on, is Price is Right or Family Fued. Hugs all!

The Price is Right and Family Feud are awesome. But I have always wondered do people say stupid things on there because they are nervous or are they told too, but when I play at home I kick ass.

Now when I play Jeopardy at home I am about as good as the Sean Connery’s character on SNL.

I died a little when CBS cancelled The Guiding Light….. for God’s sake Reva and Josh are still suppose to meet at the lake gazebo in one year to see if they were each others forever… shit for brains at CBS replaced my life long love of the opera with the Stupid Let’s Make a Deal… F*** them…. I hate that show.

What… am I gonna doooo… without MAH STORIEEEEES?!??!! Okay, kidding, i never watched any of these shows, but that’s what my Gramma Cole called ‘em, and nobody could take her away from ‘em, she’d shut DOWN to keep up with her “stories”. She’s dead now, and if they get TV in heaven I bet she is howling and ready to beat someone with a dish-towel (her preferred weapon of choice)!

    love, J-Mo :)

P.S. It’s 3:17 in the morning and I am drunk as fuck… Happy Gay Pride Weekend everybody! xoxoxoxoxoxox :)

Simply cannot believe they are canceling All my Children and One life to Live. I am so sick of they cheap reality crap I could scream, and dont’t we have enough talk shows? They would be better off to run afternoon movies or sitcoms if they aren’t going to continue the soaps. I for one will not be watching the new line-up ugh! I will probably check out the soaps on other networks. Goodbye ABC!

Today, I cancelled my subscriptions to Soap Opera Weekly and Soap Opera Digest and they have the nerve to ask me, “Why?” I said, “There’s only four soaps left, so it’s pointless to have this magazine.” The lady said, “Oh!” What an idiot!

Hoover has cancelled all ads during the ABC soaps, and has started a campaign to save the soaps.

please e-mail savethesoaps@hoover.com and tell them what you think.
