Hey Gasmii, I just got this trailer sent to me, and thought it was a must share. HBO did a film about the first PBS documentary series aka the first reality series, An American Family shot in the early 1970s. The movie stars Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, and James Gandolfini, and premieres Saturday, April 23rd at 9PM ET/PT. I’m so excited to see this film. I’ve never seen An American Family, but know it’s an absolute must seeing as I’m such a fan of reality. Have you guys seen it?

Just FYI…World Compass will be screening the doc on April 24th, in case you wanna watch it. Click here to find out where it’s screening.

Here’s the trailer:

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

I saw bits of this as a kid. It was groundbreaking. At first, it was just a portrait of this normal family. Then the marriage breaks down. Then one of the sons came out. It’s kind of like the first season of Survivor. No one was really aware of how much impact participating in the documentary would change their lives.

Plus Diane Lane and Tim Robbins? I can’t wait!

The film ironically lacks much truth. The original PBS show was a documentary, not a reality show. For HBO or anyone else to claim it was the first reality show is just plain wrong and revising history. The HBO movie is somewhat boring, poorly acted (the performers act like wooden cutouts of the real family) and in the end is less interesting than the small clips of the original series that are included. A very weak production overall and, like JFK or other films that distort history, will probably be the way people mistakenly remember the original series.
