Fox Boss Says The X Factor’s First Season Was An Audition Year

Mike Darnell, the president of Fox alternative programming told Entertainment Weekly that the first season of The X Factor was basically an audition year. He said,  “Season 1 was basically an audition act. Simon got one big new star out of it — L.A. Reid, and that was great casting. There’s going to be a natural reassessment.”

I’m curious to see how much better it does with a new panel of judges. I truly think it didn’t do well because of the over-saturation of music competition shows. Which is exactly what Mike Darnell thinks is the reason that American Idol is slipping. “There’s no question there’s a glut of [singing competition shows that are] affecting the numbers for Idol. It’s the granddaddy, it’s run is unprecedented. I think that considering all the other shows and its age, it’s doing quite well. Having both shows on our air has put us in an incredibly strong position as a network.”

No matter who these shows get, the ratings just won’t be the same. But in Mike Darnell’s eyes, who cares–he has both, Idol and The X Factor on his network. It’s a win-win for him.

I used to be the biggest Idol fan ever, but I haven’t watched a single episode this season. I’m going to start watching this week because of Hollywood Week, but it just doesn’t have the same allure that it used to.

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

I guess he forgot to tell Simon that the first season was an “audition” one since Simon made all those bold predictions about the kazillion people that would be watching his show. And didn’t.

Maybe to some degree it is over saturation BUT I think it is the concept of Team vs Team that makes the X-factor blow.

Nobody wants to hear ANY judge GUSHING over a clearly lousy singer just because he/she is a mentor and that piss poor excuse for talent is on your team. We want the truth and sometimes it is harsh but all the fawning over everybody this year was GROSS.

I have never watched the Voice but understand it has a “team” concept to it as well. Are the judges honest or do the overlook errors to keep promoting their team?

Simon’s a pussy and to make sure his “team” wins refuses to give honest assessments of the singers. I think even Idol has become too kinder/gentler as well and is frankly boring. I want raw critisism, dreams destroyed and public humiliation in my singing competitions!!

    You want real life scenarios?
Next thing you know you’ll want the bachelor(ette) to REALLY be sincere in looking for love, or that the housewives are really friends, or Snookie is really as nasty as she is portray…nevermind on the Snookie part.
