The Real World premiered 20 years ago today in 1992! It’s crazy to think we’ve been following reality TV this long, and where it’s come today. The Real World is pretty much responsible for bringing crazy reality into our lives, and the show itself has evolved immensely from where it started.

Amazing…my, my how we’ve grown! Happy Birthday Real World!!

Here’s an old Entertainment Tonight piece on The Real World…God I feel old!

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

Wow, a whole $2600.00 per week. Somehow, I feel like they still don’t get much more than that as a stipend now. And Nads, we are around the same age and I feel old too.

:( I remember having to stay up late to watch this and this is when you had to catch a show the first time it came on because they didn’t repeat all week. They would do marathons on the weekend.

There is a theme montage of all the seasons on youtube that I watched this weekend. I didn’t realize that the first season where they had to “work” was Miami and that they went abroad four times (London, Paris, Australia, and Cancun). Who will forget Basketball Wives Tami wiring her mouth shut as a way to lose weight, Julie & Kevin’s epic fight on the streets of NYC, Puck vs. Pedro (which is still the best RW rivalry in their history), or punk-ass Stephen slapping the shit out of Irene, as she leaves the house to cope with her “lyme disease” aka bad edit in Seattle! I think my favorite season of all was the original Las Vegas season because that was cast so perfectly, they brought the sex, drama, and antics and everyone was nuts. I just wish they would stop casting archetypes and actually cast the most interesting people, but terrible casting jobs have mired many reality shows in their later seasons. (Amazing Race, Survivor, RW, etc.)

I hope they do a where are they now on the cast members past who haven’t been on the past ten challenges.

Hai Plock! I went back and re-watched most of it when they used to re-run the seasons but I thought that season was SOOOOO boring other than the slap.

Anyone else remember the THS on VH1 they had about the real world and the chick from Chicago was pissed cause they filed her being s slam pig on night vision? Or when Tek and Ruthie jumped in the pool Bick Naked in Hawaii… Those were the good old days.

Ughhhhhh dayum you Eric Neis now I have go find clips of The Grind. Not sure why I wanted to be on that show so bad, but I really did. I still fault my parents for not having me about 7 years earlier. I would have thrived being a college student in the early 90s.

Wasn’t it the Vegas season that changed the whole game for Real Worl and they got reeeeeeeaaaaal slutty.

I liked the Paris season, London gave us Jacinda (something) who is a quasi successful actress.
San Diego’s Randy (I like calling him Randazzle) I crushed on a bit.

@Gypsy, if you think Seattle is boring, you definitely missed the series of episodes where David basically was screaming in the car to his girlfriend (who I think was a producer or had some position on the show, if memory serves) and all you hear is him shrieking and crying. That was some crazy ass shit!

3 Favorite RWs: 1) Original Vegas, 2) Boston (I always wanted to hang out with that cast, for some reason), 3) Miami (Dan and Melissa’s fight was one of my favorite RW fights in history!)

3 Worst RWs: 1) DC (good idea, horrible cast), 2) Denver (I had forgotten about that season and the cast), 3) a toss up between Hollywood or Brooklyn (you know it’s bad when the first RW transgender can’t save the season).

RE: the slap heard round the world. Do you remember he slapped her because she said something along the lines of, “and I know you’re gay, you can come out of the closet.” That’s when he chased her down and slapped her. Then almost 20 years later, he comes out as gay after all. I hated that guy!

    Worst # (flove it btw)
    3.NY the second time
    2.Australia
    1.London

But that’s not to say I don’t love people from all of those casts. I too hated the Tammy crap but, it did make for good TV. I ALWAYS wonder where Dominic is now from LA.

    FREEBRAD! Nice pull. Ahhh memories.

Miami and the Original NY were always my favorites. Every single castmember in Miami did something interesting and/or had an interesting story.

London is still the most boring, after London they took away their TVs and made them get jobs. The first Vegas was a definite game changer, before that it was a HUGE deal when Amaya and Colin made out in Hawaii and then Vegas took things to a whole new level with threesomes and sex the first night, etc.

CT !!! Moist Patrol in the house (Just Kidding)

Ruthie. She was dealing with such a real issue and she turned out to be (or at least from what we can tell) successful and the show probably saved her life.

Coral. I love me a villain who doesn’t care that she is the villain.

Well, I actually really like the London season, but I do think that it gets short shrift because it’s sandwiched between the Pedro situation and Miami was such an awesomely cast season. The problem with London is that everyone seemed to get along and that was a mature cast, for the most part, which is not why most people watch the Real World, but may have been needed after the Pedro drama in SF.

In terms of my favorite cast members, my #1 will always be: Kameelah (Boston). I love how she created divisions within the house and inspired lots of drama and was not afraid to go after the bigger personalities like Syrus and Montana.

    Posted May 22, 2012 at 3:57 pm

I agree Derek , maybe boring was too harsh for London. They just got along way too well for Real World and like you said we were coming out of the craziness that was SF. London’s drama was basically Neil getting his tongue nearly bit off and Jacinda’s dog crapping in the house…which can’t carry a season. They did cast an overweight female cast member and from what I recall, they haven’t done that since, which is too bad because she was great from what I remember.

Worst — Davis. Always whining and crying and doing nothing about it. Then used a racial slur and tried to explain it away even though he was dealing with not being accepted by friends and family because of his homosexuality. Tyrie didn’t need to beat him up but a good mush would have definitely been appropriate.

I am a closeted Real World junkie, so I’m glad there’s a place where I can *shoot up* on RW heroin!!

I could not get into Brooklyn or Hollywood for my life. Here are some of my favorite cast members / seasons / moments:

    – The first NY and how raw it looks now! They were just so cool and, well, 90′s. I liked when everyone had their own shit going on – Julie dancing, Eric modeling, Heather rapping, Norm being gay etc.
    – LOVED the first Las Vegas season. They were all so good looking and sleek and exactly what you want from a group of young people being filmed in Vegas. Some of the scenes were hot!!
    – Chicago and 9/11. I felt like that cast all genuiniely loved one another. Well, except Tonya.
    – The first LA, Tami getting her jaw wired shut and having an abortion. Dominic and Aaron’s bromance.
    – I actually really liked Australia, the whole Parissa / Trisha conflict. Plus Isaac was really funny.
    – SAN DIEGO. “I’m too punk rock for this!” Just love that season. Love it.
    – Hawaii – Amaya was such a needy brat and Ruthie was intriguing.
    – The first New Orleans – Melissa is hilarious, she and Julie were both in love with Jamie. Kelly went on to marry the dude from Party of Five. “Come on be my baby tonight…”
    – The second New Orleans – I wonder if Gemye (however you spell it) and Meat Head are still together?
    – Denver – the season that had like 63 episodes.
    – Paris – I crushed on Ace hard core!
    – Cancun – Joey leaving but coming back to visit and sleeping with Ayiiia
    – Miami – I live here and I follow Dan Renzi on Yelp. That’s all.

I feel so dirty, there is so much more I could write, too.

LOL Hypnotoad, so on point the Vegas cast was the cross over into slutty abyss never to return.

Have to admit the first Real World was THE BOMB. I would love MTV to run an all seasons marathon. It’s not like they play music anymore anyway. That would rule.

Love all the responses and glad to see I’m not alone. I grew up on this show, it’s like my wooby.
