Kathy Griffin vs. Bristol Palin

kathy griffin

Man, this has been a busy week (and it’s only Monday) for Bristol Palin fighting back words of hurt…only this time her response sounded like it actually came from her, and not a professional writer. Kathy Griffin did her Bristol Palin/DWTS joke at the VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops show about Bristol being the only contestant in the history of DWTS to actually gain weight…with the end button: “She’s like the white Precious.” Super funny joke, but the troops didn’t love it so much, in fact, they booed her.

Anyway, with all of that said, Bristol fired back and said“The audience’s reaction to this ‘comedian’ spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too…I hope people didn’t have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms.”

Doesn’t surprise me that she got booed by the troops, not even a little bit. When I went to Afghanistan to do a USO Stand-Up Tour, I was specifically asked to not make fun of politics, our President, or their families…this is when George W. was in office. Lucky for me, I’m not political…but I can only imagine the kind of backlash Kathy must have felt.

When you put yourself out there like Bristol did on DWTS, you should expect both ends of the spectrum–support or disapproval…but either way–you can’t buy this kind of press. Hey, PR is PR!

Here’s Kathy telling her joke:

Team Kathy, all the way.

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

I love Kathy. She takes all of it in stride.

Someone who has had as much plastic surgery as Griffin should think twice about making fun of other people’s appearances.

If it was a funny joke, why did they boo her?

It wasn’t funny…it was tasteless. Giveen Griffin’s own battle with body image and weight, it’s surprising she would find her jokes funny.

Here’s a bit about her background, “The “Suddenly Susan” star admitted that she fell prey to some serious body image issues while seeking out her “big break” in Hollywood. Not only did Griffin get a nose job at the age of 26 in an attempt to improve her appearance, in addition to liposuction that she claims almost killed her, she also reportedly exercised obsessively, starved herself during the day and binged at night.”

Griffin is just a bitter, third-rate wannabe.

I am a fan of Kathy. I do agree the joke was stupid but I realize what her thing is and she rather have the negative publicity than the good kind. It is the way she has always been.

Yeah, I love Kathy too. If Bristol is going to be so defensive about everything and anything anyone says about her, she should have never gone on a reality show in the first place. Either take it in stride, and realize, like Nads said, that you’re going to receive commentary from good positive and negative points of view, or just sit your ass at home with your baby. You know why I would never be on a reality show? B/c I value anonymity and I have no interest in being torn to shreds on the internet! (Although I LOVE doing it to other people, especially the House-ho’s!)

@JC – they booed her I THINK b/c they’re palin supporters. i can’t imagine they’d be THAT defensive about Bristol.

who knows. comedy’s subjective. i love kathy, but she’s not for everyone.

I’m not a fan of Bristol Palin by any means (and the more I “hear” her talk the less I like her) but I don’t think the joke was funny. Kathy could have come up with better material than that. Attacking people based on their appearance is just lame to me (unless said person’s claim to fame is based on said appearance).

That said, I agree that Bristol (and her mother) need to learn to suck it up. If you want to be in the public eye you gotta expect some mockery along with the adulation.

Wow, I try 3 times to submit my post because for some reason I couldn’t get the captcha code correct, and when it finally posts, it only posts half my comment. And then I apparently randomly pressed a capital R.

Anyway, I was also gonna say that, to Kathy’s credit, I actually do believe her when she says she loves the boos. She’s a really good sport about pretty much everything.

    @nads-
You might be right. I’d like to see the video of her whole routine to see whether the audience either thought she wasn’t funny or it was just that joke that they didn’t like.

Personally, I’ve never thought Griffin was funny, and that goes back to when I first saw her in some Seinfeld episodes. I always skip those episodes when they’re on. It has nothing to do with her politics. As you say, comedy is subjective.

    @nads-

I just learned that Bristol’s brother served in the military and I’d hazard a guess that that is the real reason why most of them booed.

I am prepared to laugh at any following post that says that Track was forced into military service.

We’ve been laughing at her weight gain for weeks now. They only booed because they’d already heard this one.

As for The Boy with the Most Stupid Name in All Amurrica (Other Than His Nephew Of Course) (TBMSNAAOTHN): it’s obvious he joined up only to escape those idiot parents of his.

I like Kathy’s show and I like her .. but I find her endless stories about her celebrity encounters stand up routine not funny. She is better just walking around putting herself in funny situations than she is at stand up. Besides, I will NEVER forget the first season of the D-List when Jay Leno called her someone’s “before picture” (can’t remember who) and she cried and cried and cried because “he hurt her feelings” Lost all respect for her then and have not gained it back. I could not believe she would have the nerve to say someone hurt her feelings by making jokes to her face about her appearance.

I took the joke to mean that Bristol cannot have rehearsed much for her stint on DWTS because she didn’t lose weight like many previous contestants on the show did. I made the same joke on FB to my friends throughout the DWTS run.

Still, I’m not a big Kathy fan all around. Sometimes she irks the crap out of me and sometimes I laugh my ass off at her. I probably would have left politics out of my routine for the troops, though–just because whatever we may argue State-side, they are actually living the reality of those political policies. Whether you agree with the war or not, they are there serving our country.

LOVE Kathy. He comedy is all observational. She made an observation. Bristol should roll with it. If her Mom took to Twitter every time someone called her out on her insanity it’d be 24/7 rebuttal. Don’t be on a tv show if you can handle the criticism. I’m sure she got props as well from her right-wing comrades.

Kathy looks pretty smokin hot in the pic btw.

Nads, have you noticed how many comments your Bristol Palin posts get? Just sayin’, she’s quite polarizing, huh?

@k37744: I agree. I love Kathy’s observational humor and her show D-list. But I also agree with @Faye that her stand-up just isn’t funny when she is just recounting story after story of who sassed her and who she sassed back. But I do enjoy when she’s talking about/interacting with her mom. “Jesus H Christ, Kathleen. Pass me that box of wine.”

I too hated Kathy on Seinfeld. It’s the only episode I will turn the channel if on. But I agree, so funny when she is talking about her mother! Kind of like Margaret Cho & her funny family stories.

She obviously didn’t care b/c she had to know her audience and how they would react, right?

Did anyone watch this past season of last comic standing? Kathy was a guest comic on the final episode, and I thought she was terribly unfunny. But what WAS funny is that I am CONVINCED there was a laugh track being played after the punchlines to her jokes.
