dave letterman - apology

Letterman apologized to Sarah Palin for real last night. He said, “Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood…Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much. ”

And Sarah Palin graciously accepted and said, “Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve…Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction…This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”

As much as I can’t stand Palin, Dave was out of line, and I’m glad he apologized.

Watch the apology after the jump…

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

“Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve …”

That’s right, Sarah, the only one who gets to exploit your daughters and get paid for it you.

David may have gone beyond the pale, but c’mon, this woman has been force-feeding American her idea of family values since she popped up on the scene to prop up John McCain and the flagging Republican party.

And now she bitches? Did she not sign off on everyone of her kid’s photoshoots, pimping pictures of her grandchildren like popcorn?

Evs, Sarah. You chose to put your kids in the public eye — and obnoxiously keep them there — distasteful jokes are part of it. Sad, but true. Ask the Kennedys and Bushs and Clintons. If you want so badly to join them, righteous indignation at a bad Elliot Spitzer joke is pretty lame in comparison to the rape jokes Rush constantly throws at the Kennedys and Clintons.

Even more sad to me? Unlike the Clintons and Bushes, who pretty much kept their kids out of the media. (Jenna Bush did it to herself, y’all; you can bet Barbara Bush II didn’t sign off on that early behavior.) Get a spine or — preferably — go back to watching Russia from your back porch.

I meant to say, “Unlike the Clintons and Bushes, who pretty much kept their kids out of the media, you are parading them around.”

Grr, this woman chaps my hide.

jennaboa…the comments Rush makes about the Kennedys and Clinton are based on the criminal cases brought against various members.

And, by the way, Palin never said she could “see Russia from her house.” Tina Fey said that.

Letterman completely overstepped…but he only apologized after he milked it for a week, and then discovered that even liberals thought he had gone too far.

His “apology” included lines like, “I think I’m probably sorry I said it.” He also changed his story in the middle, once claiming he didn’t know either daughter was at the game, then saying he thought it was the older one (as if that makes the “joke” less offensive.) Yeah. Very sincere.

I believe Letterman set this whole thinkg in motion on purpose…because now no one is talking about the new Conan show.

Sarah Palin has another opportunity to come out and be a whiny victim. Good for her! David Lettermans joke was gross. Just say you’re sorry and move on. The two parties are so completely on the opposite sides of the fence that no one is thinking rationally. Obama is so far one giant mess, but his side won’t say it! And the other side is so gross about it who wants to listen to them? Politics are wrecking our country, and for what? More of our money gone every day. People need to drop this childish bs and pay attention to where our country’s going. The shitter.

The joke was in poor taste. Everyone agrees with that. Apology given and accepted lets move on from yet another side show.

Johnyrocket-Obama inherited one giant mess and has been in office for 5 months. Give it a rest already.

This country has been going the wrong way for a long time. We all contributed to it.

I agree with Cattyfan and feel the comments would be different if this were about the Obama girls. What Dave said was wrong. Wrong is wrong…regardless.

Ugh, ok. This is what happens when I don’t get my caffeine in time and make snarky comments.

cattyfan, again, I am not defending Letterman’s “jokes” here, but I do question Sarah Palin’s pimping of her kids to every low-rent celebrity rag there is and then complaining when the shock jocks and comedians make distasteful jokes about them. It’s an unfortunate part of the world we live in that children get dragged into their parents’ celebrity.

As a regular listener of Rush’s shows since way back when he had a TV show, sorry, I have to disagree that his comments on the Kennedys and Clintons are all based on their “criminal actions.” His innuendos regarding Bill’s affairs and Hillary’s sexual orientation are not about something criminal. It’s not a criminal action to be a lothario or to be gay or to be married and be in the closet. Those who have tried have yet to prove the Clinton scandals; that there appear to have been scandals is not proof. It *is* a crime for Clinton to lie under oath in court about getting laid and he paid for that proven action, cattyfan. Rush can joke about that criminal action and will until they finally drag him from behind the golden microphone to the Happy Hills Retirement Village. and he’d still be bitching about Bill Clinton becuase, for some reason, Bill is Teflon. Odious? Of course he is. I don’t like his actions but his affairs are Hillary’s problem and shouldn’t have been ours. And if she is gay, well, that is also her business. He’s not the only president in this century to lie under oath or about sex outside his marriage. Given the other’s lies, I’d much rather a man lie about sex (and being a lying, cheating bastard, which ruins only his marriage) than lie about intelligence matters that lead a country into wars where friends of mine have been killed.

And Rush’s comments made about Kennedy’s health were hardly about Chappaquiddick and were disgusting. Kennedy was tried and convicted by the courts for his crime and if his dying of brain cancer has anything to do with a woman who drowned, then it is between him and his God. It is hardly Rush’s place to say nasty things about someone’s terminal illness, but he does have a track record.

Palin did mention Russia’s proximity to her state as a foreign policy credential in interviews with Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson. Quote from one of the interviews: “We have trade missions back and forth. We– we do– it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is– from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to– to our state.” Practically neighbors, and that is where her lack of interviewing experience and foreign policy knowledge made her SNL fodder.
