Hey Gasmii!
I had the awesome opportunity to interview Busy Philipps for Cougar Town! As you may or may not know, Cougar Town premieres tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 8th) on it’s new network, TBS at 10PM ET/PT. This season is supposed to be awesome! And I have to say that Busy was one of the funniest and nicest people ever! I love her!
Here’s my interview with her:
Nads: Do you feel like you have more freedom with Cougar Town because you’re on cable now?
Busy: I think going into this season we all thought that there was going to be more swearing, but then as my husband pointed out before I came to work, it’s basic cable, so the rules are pretty much almost the same. You know, the way that things have shifted in the past 10-13 since I’ve been on TV is insane. From Freaks and Geeks when they would not air the episode “Kim Kelly Is My Friend” because they thought it was too racy for television.
Nads: What was so bad about that episode?
Busy: Nothing! You really have to watch the episode to understand the irony of it. The network would not air it b/c they thought it was too rough and too tough. In the episode I had a kind of abusive mom and weird step dad who’s creepy. But, they just wouldn’t air it.
Nads: But now they have polygamy on television, how crazy is that?
Busy: It’s par for the course. It’s not just that they just have polgamy, it’s who doesn’t have polygamy!
Nads: Do you think reality has pushed the evelope for scripted?
Busy: Maybe! I’m kind of reality fan…
Nads: What are your favorite reality shows?
Busy: It’s tough…my favorite reality shows are Top Chef, Top Chef Masters and Project Runway, but I’ll watch anything when I’m bored and I’m not with my kid. I’ve watched most of them. I’ve never seen Honey Boo Boo or Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Nads: OMG. Honey Boo you can watch a whole act with all of them at the nail salon and you’re like–why am I still watching this? It’s fascinating…
Busy: Some reality is mesmerizing. Someone said this a long time ago–Americans will sink to the lowest common denomiator when given the choice. And I agree w/ that sometimes. It’s just what feels cozy to us. Hopefully Cougar Town is not that, but people will watch it anyway.
Nads: Do you think people love your show because they love to drink?
Busy: People DO love to drink! This show has become known for drinking. It’s kind of intense. I’m into it! I like to drink.
Nads: What happened with the show moving? Did ABC cancel it?
Busy: It didn’t happen like that. ABC didn’t officially cancel us. It just wasn’t on the schedule. TBS just came in and made an offer. It’s still an ABC studios production, but I’m so happy about being on TBS!
If you like it, spread it!:

Great interview Nads!
Some one is soon to be out growing the Gamii crowd. Congrats as I do find her the funniest one on that show.
Ha! thanks labowner and Parisi! I’m a Gasmii at heart. It’s like an abusive relationship I can never leave, and I love it! I agree – I think she’s the funniest on the show!
Nads, have no idea if you can answer this or not – why is it, on some shows, the supporting characters are usually leaps and bounds ahead of the main characters when it comes to being funny. Cougar Town and Will & Grace pop into my head as examples.
So true! I think it’s bc the supporting characters add so much splash and color and are on so sparringly compared to the main characters that they’re a breath of fresh air. Also, a lot of times–from my audtioning for sitcom roles experience–I can tell you, that they always want someone with good comedic timing or a comedic actress when casting the supporting characters. It’s not a formula, it just always happens to be the quirky neighbor, or something crazy like that. I know the goal is to have the leads be funny, but a lot of times it doesn’t work out that way. Just my opinion from reading scripts and auditioning.
