TLC is all about exploiting crazy obsessions and niche worlds, and one of their crazy specials that they’re bringing back is, I Cloned My Pet. The special will follow three more people that have had their pets cloned. The NY Post wrote an interesting article about one of the couples that’s going to be featured on the new special, and it was interesting enough for me to write about because this world is so foreign to me…Their story goes like this: their poor yellow lab died, they froze his remains and then a biotech company came out with the technology to clone people’s pets for $155,000…so naturally the NY couple payed the price and cloned their dead yellow lab, Sir Lancelot.

Sir Lancelot’s Mom, Nina told the Post, “We had the money to do it. We could have bought a boat; we’re in Florida. We could afford a plane. That’s not what we wanted. We really, really love animals. They look almost exactly the same. I don’t know if Lancelot was sitting next to Lancey if I could tell them apart.”

Sir Lancelot’s Dad, Edgar said, “We are probably going to be thought of as kooks. We did not clone this dog with any preconceived ideas that we’re going to have the same dog back. We were very objective about it. But the clone does have the same personality. As far as we’re concerned, if it’s not the same dog, it’s damn close.”

I’m just waiting for TLC to come out with I Cloned My Grandpa…honestly, I’d love to have that old man back. He was good times. I just hope once they have the technology, they don’t bring Grandpa back as a dirty old man…I want my sweet loving Grandpa that would have coffee with his ice cream, play solitaire and smile all the time.

I Cloned My Pet airs on Monday night at 10PM on TLC.

About

Although comedy is her profession, Nadine has accomplished a lot in her young age. She is a national champion black belt, a world-class soccer player, and an avid snowboarder. She started playing soccer at the age of 4, and continued playing through college where she majored in Biology, but quickly realized her destiny was to tell jokes, not to wear a lab coat. So she decided to be funny while finishing her Bachelors Degree in biology and continued on to get her M.B.A. Nadine’s comedy style is much like her athleticism, fearless. She’s made her way up the comedy ladder very quickly, and has become a club favorite at many of the country’s top comedy clubs, including the Improv chain. Performing in the Boston Comedy Festival and being noted as the “one of the youngest and brightest up and comers” and traveling to the Middle East to entertain the troops are just a few of her notable accomplishments. These days Nadine splits time between the stage, a radio studio, her computer blogging, and a television studio. Nadine’s TV, Radio, Writing credits include: national commercials, talking head roles on E! Entertainment, Showtime’s Hot Tamales Live, The Skinny: Fat Free News, The Sunny Side of The Truth: Real World Hollywood, TVgasm, Zazreport, Daddy’s Girls, Jerseylicious, celebrity interviews on Mania TV, a weekly half-hour television show that syndicates to colleges across the country for National Lampoon and a nightly radio show on XM Satellite Radio.

This reminds me of the This American Life segment where they interviewed a rancher who had his favorite bull cloned when it died unexpectedly. The original bull was a sweetheart, more dog-like in personality than a bull. The clone was a mean tempered, vicious, stereotypical bull. When the This American Life crew was at the ranch for the interviews, the bull actually attacked and almost killed the rancher.

Seriously, how do they know that it’s a clone? I’m really lazy today and would otherwise do a google search on it to overcome my ignorance on this subject. They must inject the DNA into a donor egg, and fertilize a surrogate in vitro?
How does the person hoping for their new pet know that they cloned their deceased pet? That the company didn’t just bring in a new Lab pup? Yellow labs look pretty much the same and even Nina said ‘they look ALMOST exactly the same”.
I know cloning is possible and remember Dolly the Sheep. But in my hardened heart, I can see less than scrupulous companies scamming people for Thousands to satisfy their longing for a beloved pet.
    I wish I weren’t such a lazy pessimist.

Nebish you don’t own a pet do you? No most labs don’t look alike at all. Why would the company screw themselves over like that?

Wow $155k? Isn’t there a company in Asia that was doing it for $50k? I really do think about doing this with my dog, but not sure if he would be the same old Eyeore.

Of course this is TLC, so one of the dog owners had the cloned canine embryo implanted in her womb and carried it for 63 days, before having a vet do a Cesarian. She states “I feel even closer to Mr. Wiggles II than I did to Mr. Wiggles I. I’m thinking of doing the same thing with my husband when he passes.”
