Tom’s Lawyer Hopes The Divorce Won’t Be “Contentious”

Tom Cruise’s attorney, Bert Fields, told the L.A. Times that he hopes Tom’s divorce won’t be “contentious.” He said, “I would hope that it’s not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person.” He’s right, Tom’s not a contentious person, he’s an alien! But that’s not saying much…E.T. wasn’t contentious unless provoked…so I guess that rule doesn’t apply to ALL aliens. I’ll be able to better assess the “contentious alien” situation once the divorce is over.

MSNBC reported that Katie’s marriage contract  gave her $3 million/year, with the potential to earn to $33 million if she stayed married with Tom for 11 years. And if she lasted longer than 11 years, the contract would have become void, and Katie could have had half of Tom’s fortune. My question is why didn’t Katie ride it out for six or seven more years? She already did five, what’s another six more? I guess she’s banking on getting child support payments since she wants sole custody of Suri. Once all is said and done, I wonder if Katie will un-stepford herself? Doubt it.

Nads– I am guessing that Katie wants to get the kid out NOW!!!!!

And hey Gasmii–am shocked that none of us are wondering if Katie has herself a new man!!!!!

“Contentious”????? it may be– breakups can be ugly. I bet there will be a DNA test on Suri.

I think she’s getting out now because Suri’s hit school age, and if she stayed with him her daughter would be headed straight for the School of $cientology. As a mother that may freak her out. Look at Nicole, I bet you 11 years worth of TomKat marriage those adopted children do not speak to her.

Cloudsinmycoffee — Unfortunately, I think that’s true. Nicole Kidman has stated in several interviews that Connor and Isabella live with Tom, are being raised as Scientologists, and that she rarely ever sees or speaks to them. Sad.

I also read an interview where she revealed that they call her “Nicole” — which she hated — while Katie Holmes affirmed that they call HER “Mom.”

It makes you wonder if they’ve been brainwashed by Tom to believe that their mother (who is not a fan of Scientology) is the enemy. If so, then it’s no wonder that Katie wanted out ASAP and is fighting for sole custody of Suri.

I read on another board that at six, Suri would start her indoctrination into Scientology. That would mean cutting her off from anyone who isn’t part of that religion, which I guess would include Katie’s family. I also read there that Nicole was cut off from her kids with Tom but now that the daughter has rejected Scientology she is in communication with Nicole.

Good for Katie choosing her daughter over money. Maybe they’ll bring Dawson’s Creek back and she could support both of them without Crazy’s money.

Man, remember when we all though Tom Cruise was the most awesome guy ever? Then he fired his publicist and hired his sister. Then the nutso stuff starting leaking out all over the place.

Well there’s another cult the Gasmii are discussing. Scientology is just as scary as the FLDS or the Rom– only unlike the other two, Scientology recruits.

We needn’t worry. It takes money to be one, and they won’t be going after our broke asses.

I feel sorry for Nicole and cheer Katie on for getting Suri out. Hope she has enough money to succeed. She’s fighting a very strong organization.

@6 KCZAR– roger that !!!! He wasn’t my big 1980′s crush (Emilio Estevez—sigh…..had Cawfee’s lil ole heart) but he was some mighty fine lookin’. And also– “Born on the Fourth of July” was such an incredible movie– he was great.

Hey— how interesting that many “former” Scientology members are speaking out. I thought it was like omerta???

I want Katie Holmes to sit down with Big Ang and have a cocktail and just dish about this all.

Mr Cawfee had a question– Can Katie have this marriage annulled?? They married in Italy and I will assume went thru the proper channels legally to have the marriage recognized in the American legal system. It was a Scientology ceremony (and she looked quite lovely) but how legal is their marriage?????

@9Hotsy, well you just hang on to that big ol’ tub, girfriend, because the way the big guns are bailing they just might get desperate.

I’m not even saying where the kitty fortune is stashed.

@Cawfee – (actually @Mr. Cawfee) – I could have sworn (again, this is my memory, not my actual evidence), that Katie had some sort of thing done to please her Catholic parents, and make sure it was American-Legal. Not a Catholic Church Wedding, but something to appease them.

I also wonder how much more “real” it is to Katie now, seeing how Nicole’s kids reacted to their real Mum, and she has decided she doesn’t want that for Suri… It’s a whole different world when you’re the Mum!

If it turns out that Katie does fight for child support I will have no respect for it. 15 mil and a mansion may seem like chump change to Hollywood royalty but if there’s any reason for taking Suri away from her dad (he’s her dad, no matter how creepy he is) beyond the Scientology creepiness Katie is going to look very creepy to me too. If Suri needs more than that to maintain her lifestyle, Katie can work for it herself. A custody battle is going to be no joke for that kid, and throwing more money into the argument would be horrible.

The thing about the kids not calling Nicole “mom” was totally distorted by the press. What she actually said (in a jokey exchange with an interviewer) was that they call her “Mom” and sometimes “Nicole.” She then giggled and said she hates that and tells them to knock it off. She was talking about being the mother of teenagers, in other words. It was when Katie shoehorned a remark about the kids calling HER “Mom” in a later interview that Nicole’s former interview was made so much of. That interview of Katie’s was very strange and it was totally unnecessary for her to make that comment. Another instance of her seeming to be going by some kind of script.

Child support follows federal guidelines. 14% for one child, 20% for two and upwards. Katie wouldn’t even have to “fight” for that. It’s just mandated that way and she would have to waive having it enforced. And why should she. Yes it is a lot of money, but that’s the point of having a set standard for everyone. 14% of your income regardless of how big or how small your income is.

@nooneinparticular – state guidelines, not federal. But the rest is 100% spot on. :) No matter what you make (as the non-custodial parent), your kids deserve a standard percentage of that.

I don’t know how a prenup affects that, and I don’t want the difference between New York and California guidelines are. But what I meant was that if the reason she is filing for sole custody has to do with getting more child support than she would get from joint custody (and she is indeed asking for “a suitable amount” plus “division of property” which was not in the prenup) then I think that’s underhanded and harmful to the kid.

Reports indicate that she wants sole custody because she doesn’t want Suri to be under Scientology’s control, not to get more money.

Most reports I’ve read posit both reasons (Scientology and child support) as reasons. I’m just saying if she’s dragging the kid away from Tom and Scientology it would be noble of her not to muddy the issue by asking for more child support than she’s legally owed.

@StageMom that was actually my secret 2nd guess. Actually I was hoping real hard it would be about $. A 5 yr bonus like you were wondering earlier.

Because that other thing does some nasty stuff. And there’ve always been rumors of even worse. To the point where it’s probably not even a good idea to go rooting around too much about it.

But it starts to make more sense the way she’s always carrying Suri around like she’s scared somebody might up and grab her. And not just like a random nut. But somebody that’s supposed to be staff.
