Friday, July 6

On this date in 1885, Louis Pasteur gave the first successful rabies vaccine to Joseph Meister, a nine year old boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Meister grew up to become the caretaker for the Pasteur Institute until he killed himself in 1940 due to despair over the Nazi occupation of Paris.

It’s a good night for movies.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (ABC Family 8pm) The young wizard and his best friends investigate a dark force that is terrorizing their school, Hogwarts. Based on a book by J.K. Rowling.

Hogwarts is almost as dangerous as Sunnydale High.

Deliverance (AMC 8pm) Four Atlanta businessmen encounter unexpected terrors during a rafting trip down a raging backwoods river. Based on the book by James Dickey.

The movie that taught us all how dangerous banjo music truly is.

Cruel Intentions (Oxygen 8pm) A manipulative adolescent challenges her stepbrother to ruin two sexually innocent acquaintances.

A journey back to a more innocent time when Sarah Michelle Geller had more than two facial expressions.

RED (The Movie Channel Extra 8pm) Retired CIA agents reassemble for survival after the agency sends assassins to silence them and the secrets they carry. Based on the graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.

“I never thought I’d say this again: I’m getting the pig!”

Popeye (HBO Family 8:30pm) The sailor with big forearms rows to Sweethaven and steals skinny Olive Oyl from large Bluto.

The role Shelley Duvall was born to play.

A Knight’s Tale (BBC America 9pm) An English commoner dons the armor of a dead jouster and, with the help of friends, competes against nobles in 14th-century France.

Young Heath Ledger. Yummy.

Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back (Spike 9pm) Yoda teaches Luke Skywalker to be a Jedi knight, and Han Solo woos Princess Leia, as Darth Vader returns to threaten the rebel forces trying to save the galaxy.

We all know it’s really the second Star Wars movie, because the prequels don’t count.

The Game (TMC 9:35pm) A control freak’s disreputable brother introduces him to a mysterious game that invades his ordered existence.

Proof positive that Sean Penn isn’t quite right in the head.

1408 (MTV 10pm) A writer who specializes in debunking supernatural phenomena experiences true terror when he spends a night in a reputedly haunted room of a hotel. Based on a short story by Stephen King.

MTV has completely lost sight of their mission statement, unless their mission statement is to confuse the hell out of everybody regarding what to expect when it comes to their programming.

Raising Arizona (Sundance 10pm) A loser and his wife kidnap a quintuplet from an unfinished-furniture store magnate.

This movie pretty much makes up for everything Nicolas Cage has subjected the world to ever since.

About

After giving birth to her fourth child, SuburBint carefully weighed the options and decided that recapping reality TV was probably a better choice in the long run than alcoholism. Liver function tests have yet to confirm the wisdom of this decision. Being an honest-to-goodness recapper is also a dream come true, as she has aspired to do this ever since discovering that such a thing existed way back in 2002.

Her favorite shows of all time include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Coupling, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Community, Parks and Recreation, Doctor Who, and Veronica Mars. She can also quote The Big Lebowski in its entirety, and will do so with little to no provocation.
