Saturday, April 7

Russell Crowe turns 48 today.

The 10 Commandments (ABC 8pm) Moses leads an exodus from Egypt to the Promised Land, complete with parting of the Red Sea.

So… they weren’t able to get the rights to Ben Hur and assumed that most people wouldn’t know the difference as long as Charlton Heston was wearing a robe? They’re probably not wrong.

Happy Easter!

The Amazing Race (CBS 8pm) Tensions between two teams come to a head; the racers train with Masai warriors in Tanzania.

Because when Phil says “Jump,” they say, “How high?”

Harry’s Law (NBC 8pm) A former client accuses Harry of taking advantage of him.

I hope he doesn’t mean sexually.

GCB (ABC 9pm) Blake has a special request for Cricket.

It’s astonishing how many “GCB”s have the word “cricket” as the C.

The Celebrity Apprentice (NBC 9pm) One celebrity blows up at a teammate.

My money’s on Lisa.

Nurse Jackie (Showtime 9pm) Premiere: Jackie realizes she needs help.

Just now she’s realizing that?

GCB (ABC 10pm) Episode: Sex is Divine — Pastor Tudor surprises the congregation when he tells them to get frisky.

It’s amazing how many people start coming to church when the pastor starts talking about sex.

Mad Men (AMC 10pm) Don runs into someone from his past; Joan makes a decision, and Roger gives Peggy extra work.

I just took the Mad Men personality test: I’m Betty Draper. FML

Game of Thrones (HBO 10pm) Tyrion chastens Cersei for alienating the king’s subjects; Arya shares a secret with Gendry; one of Dany’s scouts returns with news; Theon Greyjoy reunites with his father; Davos enlists a pirate to join forces with Stannis and Melisandre.

However, in the Game of Thrones personality test I was Tyrion, so I guess things are looking up.

The Borgias (Showtime 10pm) Pope Alexander VI takes a new lover; a cache of ancient artifacts is discovered; Cesare and Juan’s rivalry spills into the streets; Lucrezia tends her newborn child; Della Rovere escapes an assassination attempt.

Wacky hijinks ensue.

What will you be watching this weekend?

About

After giving birth to her fourth child, SuburBint carefully weighed the options and decided that recapping reality TV was probably a better choice in the long run than alcoholism. Liver function tests have yet to confirm the wisdom of this decision. Being an honest-to-goodness recapper is also a dream come true, as she has aspired to do this ever since discovering that such a thing existed way back in 2002.

Her favorite shows of all time include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Coupling, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Community, Parks and Recreation, Doctor Who, and Veronica Mars. She can also quote The Big Lebowski in its entirety, and will do so with little to no provocation.

Oh wow. Of course it is. I knew I wasn’t entirely myself when I put this together, but that glaring of a “duh” moment is downright embarrassing. I’m not ignorant, just a little ditzy every now and again.

umm, I think the Ten Commandments are too rigid. They should get rid of a few and replace them with better ones.

BTW SuberBent, The Ten Commandments isn’t for any special occasion as far as I know, It is a movie that disects the Bible while trying to represent a time in religious history. Nothing more than that and nothing that you should be embarrased about, certainly. It is just a made up movie.

I have a well worn Bible. But, I also happen to think that “A Christmas Story” should be on a constant loop from Thanksgiving til Christmas because that movie doesn’t confuse folks. Just a simple story, no passover, no easter. Just a good funny leg lamp, Chinese eating, tongue sticking good time.

    Take care, Robin

“The Ten Commandments” is for Passover, because when the 10 plagues happened, the last one was killing the firstborn Egyptian sons, but the Hebrews were “passed over” and then they got to leave, which was the Exodus from Egypt and resulted in the Ten Commandments in the first place, and also the institution of the observance of Passover. And I should have remembered that, considering that I grew up in a rigorously Christian household, went to Sunday School every week, and know my Bible stories backwards and forwards and can repeat them in my sleep. So it is embarrassing to me, because I know I know better!

“A Christmas Story” is on a constant loop from Thanksgiving to Christmas… at least it was when I was a kid, because my dad watched it every. Single. Time. It came on the air. I can also repeat it in my sleep. I still like to watch it once every Christmas season, but any more than that and I start to get glassy eyed and rambly.

I used to enjoy trolling the Craig’s List W4W boards (because a good percentage of those bitches be KA-razy) and every April, all April, they have a Peeps obsession. Nothing but Peeps pictures with clever sayings, plays on the word Peeps, and Photoshopped images of Peeps. To the point where a few women who were actually on the boards to meet people would post and say “KNOCK IT OFF with the fuckin’ Peeps, okay??”

Telling the two movies apart is easy: The 10 Commandments is the one where Charleton Heston says “Pharaoh, let my people go!” Ben Hur is the one where Charleton Heston competes in that deliciously violent chariot race. It’s weird, but the Easter Bunny doesn’t make an appearance in either movie.

Oh, so if they broadcasted The Ten Commandments on, say, July 17th it wouldn’t be as relevant? My point was that it doesn’t make a difference what DAY the movie is shown. The message is the same.

Gotcha, my point was that my brain went Charlton Heston -> Ben Hur -> Crucifixion -> Easter, instead of Charlton Heston -> 10 Commandments -> Moses -> Passover, even though both happen at pretty much the same time. If they were airing The Ten Commandments in July, I would assume that ABC had finally completely given up. :-)

Great segway to airing the movie in July and ABC’s lack of programming, too. hee hee.

    Hoppy Easter?

  23. 23
    SuburBint
    Posted April 9, 2012 at 10:18 am

I know this one! The holiday is called Easter because the observance of Passover (and therefore the crucifixion of Christ) coincided with a pagan holiday in which homage was payed to the fertility goddess Eostre (the Anglo-Saxon version of Astarte), and back in the day of Constantine when they were trying to Christianize the entire Roman Empire they did their best to incorporate pagan holidays into Christian observances so as not to alienate new converts. As we all know, the expression “humping like bunnies” is rooted in fact, so combine that with a fertility goddess, and voila! The Easter Bunny is born. That is also why eggs are a symbol of Easter, although the egg has also been co-opted by Christianity as a symbol of new life or some such.

Very informative, thank you SuperB. I should have known it was a cross over b/w Romans and Pagans with a dash of WASPs. I’ve read the Da Vinci Code ;-)

Now when you say Constantine, are you referring to the Keanu Reeves version or the original?

    I kid.

The Ten Commandments won the night in ratings with 6.9 million viewers tuning in to watch Moses part the Red Sea. I guess ABC made a wise choice.

I have to admit.. I watched it, if for no other reason then to watch Anne Baxter portray Nefretiri, Queen of Egypt. She was fabulous and so spiteful. She was the star of that movie.

I DID record “To Kill a Mockingbird”, but missed the intro by the President. Did anyone see that?

I watched the movie too – I loved Anne Baxter. I love the whole cheesy spectacle.

I did see the intro by the President for “To kill the Mockingbird”. It was fine – he also added the comment about reading the book as well. I am a big fan of the book and movie. It really is an essential reading.
