Chef Gordon Ramsay has taken over the summer on FOX TV. Tonight, right after his ratings popular Hell’s Kitchen, at 8pm, is the premiere of Master Chef at9pm. This new show gives the everyday home cook the chance to make it big on TV & win $250,000 along with a cookbook contract. It starts out with 50 amateur cooks in a cook-off of sorts. By August 10th, they will be sauteed down to just 14 wannabe chefs. Ramsay, along with Chef Graham Elliot & Joe Bastianich (partner of Mario Balali) are the judges. After HK’s finale, this show will extend to 2-hrs & move to Wednesday nights. Once this series is over, I’m sure Kitchen Nightmares will take up the Ramsay slack.

Everyone knows motivational speaker/self-help guru Tony Robbins…. right? (he was in “Shallow Hal” see above^) Well NBC is banking on it. Tonight is the premiere of Breakthrough with Tony Robbins at 8pm. It’s Robbin’s shining moment. He’s actually got a major network to let him work his “infomercial” routine & they are paying him! Gotta love the guy cuz he has finally perfected his trade. The show will focus on one individual problem with real people. He will show them a new way of thinking, his way, thus making a miserable life much more tolerable with his “Yes we can!” attitude. Relax, there are only 6 episodes. America’s Got Talent follows at 9pm.

Joining the “Rock Star Reality Show” trend, which was started by Ozzy Osbourne oh so long ago, is Dee Snider from the rock band “Twisted Sister”. Growing Up Twisted premieres tonight at 10pm & again at 10:30pm on A&E, with another new episode. The star explains it this way, “It’s the Huxtables meet the Munsters and I’m Dr. Huxtable…. The normal one!” Is this one too many? We still have Bret Michael’s reality show, Life as I Know It, waiting in the wings on VH1.

The second season premiere of The Colony airs at 10pm on Discovery. For those who don’t remember, it’s a reality show with 7 volunteers pretending there was an apocalypse & how they survive with virtually nada.

The summer TV season has it’s good nights & it’s bad nights. Tonight is a good night. Other shows with new episodes tonight are:

Pretty Little Liars, is a new hit on ABC Family at 8pm. Definitely geared for the ‘tweens”, but I think the little bitches are interesting enough to keep me watching. There’s also Make It or Break It at 9pm.

Kathy Griffin: Life on the D-List airs at 10pm on BRAVO. I used to love her & the show BUT she’s gone from funny to obnoxious since her husband screwed her over. Men will do that to ya.

Cupcake Wars at 9pm on the FOOD Network, has three icing experts making cupcakes with ingredients from the concession stand at the movie theater. Mmmmmm…. Milk Dud cupcakes with JuJuBee frosting & Dots on top! Chopped follows at 10pm.

Gene Simmon’s Family Jewels is my new “guilty pleasures” TV show now that The Girls Next Door is no more (heehee… I rhymed). I’ve been watching repeats all weekend since Big Brother Live Feeds (go here) have been making me crazy!  Tonight on A&E, are two new episodes at 10 & 10:30pm. ( followed by the new series Growing Up Twisted) Daughter Sophie starts her own business called “Hunks with Hammers” after the plumber who came to their home was less than attractive & of course, showed off his butt-crack. Lots of half-naked hunks audition!

There are three 1-hour dramas on tonight: White Collar at 9pm on USA. The new Memphis Beat with Jason Lee, at 10pm on TNT & Rescue Me, also at 10pm, on FX.

If none of this appeals to you, there’s always my favorite movie, Zombieland (2009) 0n STARZ, at 9pm.

I’m actually looking forward to the Master Chef show (unless it sucks). $250k is life-changing, and a cookbook deal is perfectly reasonable. One of the stupid things about the Next Food Network star is that they invariably have a crappy show, but it goes on the air anyway. And I don’t care what people say, I heart Gordon Ramsay. I like a take-charge guy, even if his screaming for TV is totally hyped and affected. His reputation in the culinary world preceded him and we know he has mad skillz.

Speaking of affected, Gene Simmons show is so contrived I can only take it in very small doses. And I used to be one of Kathy Griffin’s biggest fans — now I can’t stand her. I haven’t given her show the time of day for over two years. Get a new schtick, hon, maybe you can make lightning strike twice.

My daughter loves Chopped but I can’t see the value of forcing chefs to (for example) make dessert out of vanilla bean, vermouth, cracker jack and anchovies. What’s the point? Most of the stuff is barely edible.
