Do you guys watch “Smash?” I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t! Bad gay! BAD!

I was a musical theater kid and am a half assed musical theater adult, and when Smash started I just knew I was gonna love it. But it had dead eyed Katherine McPhee in it so I figured I would wait to hear from people that it was brilliant before I committed. I never heard that, and time slipped away.

Then this season, the ads with Jennifer Hudson were so electrifying that I swore I would jump in on the action. And didn’t. Seeing her look so good filled me with guilt for not being able to stick to Weight Watchers for more than a week.

Then I see clips like the one below and it makes me want to watch AGAIN! Maybe one day before this show ends I will sit through and episode and start earning my gay card back. Until then, NBC, just keep sendin’ me clips!

About

Currently, Flipit's writing Real Housewives of Beverly Hills recaps, which you can find here. You can also find him doing a gossip segment twice a week called BS of the Day and video recaps of Project Runway All Stars, as well as spoof ReDubs of the coming soon trailers at the end of RHOBH!

Ronnie Karam has been with TVgasm since 2006 , which has given him the opportunity to make fun of hundreds of TV's most loved and hated reality whores. His plan in life was to be Julia Roberts but that plan was stolen by, well, Julia Roberts. He'll get you one day, JULIA ROBERTS!! When not making himself giggle for the gasm, Ronnie performs improv and sketch comedy at IO West in Hollywood a couple of times weekly while using the lovely California days to audition for commercial roles such as "ADORABLE MEXICAN UNCLE". Seriously. He would like to thank Jesus, Buddha and Xenu for the blessings they've bestowed. The writers here are the best around, and he's honored to be associated with them. Be grateful you didn’t fall for the Jennifer Hudson hook. It was awful.

Katherine McPhee can sing, but her character is just kinda there. She makes no impression as an actress at all. Good or bad. And I’m assuming that counts as “bad” if you’re an actress. My own acting career ended after that unfortunate vomiting incident in a 6th-grade production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“Get thee to a nunner… [YARF!].

I love Smash! Sure it’s a little bit hokey. And ok, new musicals don’t get written, work-shopped, and given an out-of-town tryout in less than a year (or do they? What do I know, I’m a West Texas videographer lol) The acting (or over-acting) may be a little over the top, but who here doesn’t have drama in their life? Anyone? Bueller?
Anyways, it’s always great to see real Broadway Stars on television! So don’t concentrate on the script so much and just enjoy the great production values (in the musical numbers, at least). Smash beats Dancing With The Wannabees in my book any day of the week. Oh, and checking…..yep, my gay membership card is all up to date and paid up. :)

Don’t get me wrong. I still love me some Smash. But I will say that season 2 has not grabbed me the way it should have. And I have not fallen in love with any of the characters which is a problem when I can’t find any redeeming quality in their personality. But I still watch…guess I’m just a cockeyed optimist.

Naw, you’re not missing anything. It’s an okay show. Not great. The occasional decent song and dance number (usually ruined by Skeletor McPhee’s awful Marilyn impersonation) — the other singer gal, the blonde (sorry, I haven’t learned any of the actors’ names), would be much more fun to watch, but apparently they’ve decided to build the entire series around McPhee’s impression of a Howdy Doody puppet.

The rest of the case is pretty snivelly. The “writing team” both speak through their noses all the time and have weirdly inflamed nostrils or something — they look like they’re trying to flap their nostrils and fly away, a la Dumbo, all the time.

Angelica Huston’s just… ick. I mean, she’s a great actress. But they keep trying to make her all sultry in this. When she’s really like watching some football player in drag. Sorry, Angelica, but that’s how it is.

The first season they had this little weasel guy on there, one of the worst characters ever developed for a tv series. This season they got rid of him — but lately they’ve brought in this new pair of up n’ comers with awkward haircuts. Everytime McPhee and one of these kids look like they’re about the kiss, Mrs. Itchy starts to scream.

We keep expecting the show to go somewhere… but it just kind of plods along, as if the writers haven’t yet written the script… lately they’re trying to develop THREE musicals all at the same time — so we end up getting little to no music from any of them (hint: the young up n’ comers’ music REALLY blows).

Ah well. It’s not so bad. It’s not like it’s Once Upon a Time bad– we gave up on that one after Episode 2.5…
