Well, it’s pretty set that Jimmy Fallon is going to take over Jay Leno’s 11:35 slot in 2014…but the question is when? The Hollywood Reporter was saying that NBC could take advantage of launching Jimmy after the Winter Olympics in 2014, which would not only allow Jimmy to have a large platform to launch, but it would also keep Jay Leno from leaving to a rival network since he’s under contract until September 2014. But the question is, will he be ready? Personally I love Jimmy Fallon and he will certainly bring in a younger demo, but will he appeal to my mom, dad, grandma, aunt and uncle? Probably not. But then again, that’s not who the advertisers are going after (and that’s who pays the bills at the end of the day). They go after that key demo of 18-49 (I could be wrong, don’t quote me on this number)…
So what are people between the ages of 18-49 (the largest demo in the world, btw) doing? They’re active online, they’re computer savvy, and they’re probably more inclined to watch Jimmy Fallon over Leno. Jimmy is just more hip to the younger generation, and clearly it’s the kids that are the tastemakers. I can see why NBC wants to make this shift. It’s a risky one, but then again so was Conan. I’m all for the move and hope Jimmy’s stars align better than Conans’. In a way I kind of feel bad for Jay Leno. He’s like the ex-girlfriend that got a second chance, only to get dumped again.
Jimmy Fallon has certainly come a long way!
**UPDATE** Jay will finish out his contract, then Jimmy will takeover. This is mainly because NBC will have to pay a huge penalty to Jay if they pull the plug early.
If you like it, spread it!:

I love Jimmy Fallon and hope he does well but like you said he does have some uphill battles to climb. I’ve been to see his show a couple of times and while my brother and I loved it (ages 23 and 26), my parents said they enjoyed it but they didn’t totally get his humor , and they of course are more of the earlier timeslot audience. Also, if you look at his first couple episodes they’re completely cringe-worthy at how uncomfortable, nervous and just plain bad he was. He’s come a long way but I have a feeling starting a new show from scratch might bring some of that back at the beginning which might prematurely turn a lot of people off.
Here’s rooting for you Jimmy! #TeamCoco #TeamFallon
I’m hoping that Fallon won’t do what Conan did – try to appeal to Leno’s audience (which probably have an average age range of 65-dead). Those folks are peobably still POed that Carson retired so they weren’t going to like Conan and the people that liked Conan before didn’t like the Geritol and Metamucil jokes.
I don’t watch Fallon (I can’t stay up late enough anymore) but the video clips I’ve seen are funny. Hopefully he’ll replace Leno instead of just taking over like Conan did.
